Youth commits suicide
Phagwara, January 22
A youth reportedly committed suicide by jumping before a running train near a railway crossing in Goraya today. The deceased, identified as Amarpreet Singh (23) of Pawma village, was a student of Ramgarhia Polytechnic College, Phagwara.

Fill vacant posts in admn, SDM offices, say employees

Nawanshahr, January 22
The DC Office Employees Association today organised a gate rally on the second day of their agitation here to press the state government to fill vacant posts so that the Right to Service Act and Right to Information Act could be implemented properly.

Jatinder Pal Singh and Bahadur Singh, chairman and president of the association, respectively, said two posts of office superintendents, 15 senior assistants, 93 clerks and five steno typists had been lying vacant in the administrative offices of the Deputy Commissioner and SDM offices at Nawanshahr, Banga and Balachaur in the district, consequently, putting burden on the present staff working in the offices.

They would hold protest rallies on Tuesday and Wednesday and observe pen-down strike on Thursday and Friday to raise their demands.

Gang of robbers busted, 5 held

Batala, January 22
The police busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of five of its members and recovered two double-barrel guns, .315-bore rifle, two .315-bore country-made pistols, 10 live cartridges and three motorcycles from their possession.

The SSP, Tulsi Ram, said on a tip-off that some miscreants were planning a robbery near Cheema village, a police team, led by DSP (City) Manvinder Singh and accompanied by Kulwinder Singh, SHO, Ghumman police station, and Sukhpal Singh, SHO, Sekhwan, raided the place where they were planning the robbery.

However, on seeing the policemen, the robbers started firing at them. After facing some resistance, the police was able to arrest five of them, while three managed to flee.

The arrested robbers have been identified as Harmanjeet Singh, Raj Singh, Malkait Singh, Ranjit Singh and Kuldeep Singh.

A case under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against them. — TNS

Youth commits suicide

Phagwara, January 22
A youth reportedly committed suicide by jumping before a running train near a railway crossing in Goraya today. The deceased, identified as Amarpreet Singh (23) of Pawma village, was a student of Ramgarhia Polytechnic College, Phagwara.

Sources said the deceased was seen arguing with two persons near the railway lines before taking the extreme step.

The railway police has registered case and sent the body to civil hospital for post-mortem examination.
