50% children anaemic in city: Survey
Chandigarh, January 15
Over 50 per cent children in the city were found anaemic during a national health survey conducted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The survey, which was conducted nationwide in 2012, found that about 42.3 per cent boys and 62 per cent girls studying in government and private schools were anaemic.

Swine flu: No isolated screening area in PGI

The PGI has failed to set up an isolated screening area for swine flu patients despite four deaths in the past two weeks. With two more patients testing positive today, the PGI has reported 19 cases of swine flu this season.

Stay alive, don’t drink and drive
Chandigarh, January 15
A study on road accidents in the city has revealed that people in the 15 to 40 age group are most vulnerable to road accidents. Besides, the death of children below the age of 15 accounts for 20 per cent of the total road accidents in the city. The figures are based on the seven-year data.

3-yr-old girl kidnapped
Chandigarh, January 15
A three-year old girl was allegedly kidnapped from a Sector 22 hotel. The police has booked Jagpal Bainwal, a resident of Jind, in the case. The police said the girl’s family knows the accused and a financial dispute was the reason for the kidnapping. The accused also demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh from the family, the police said.

Missing Infant recovered
Chandigarh, January 15
Three days after a four-month-old infant girl was kidnapped by her neighbours in Sector 56, the police today recovered the girl from Baghera village near Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. The police also arrested accused couple Neelam and Amit and they are being brought to Chandigarh. The accused were produced in a court there and the police procured their custody on three-day transit remand.

Panchkula, January 15
Jyoti, then an insurance agent, had first contacted the main accused Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary over the phone in June 2010. Chaudhary was then out with his supporters when he had received a call from her, saying, “Hi sir. I am Jyoti. Would you like to get your insurance done?”

Chandigarh, January 15
For the second consecutive year, Sanjay Tandon has been re-elected unopposed as the president of the Chandigarh BJP. This was declared by the central election observer, Om Prakash Dhankhar, in the presence of BJP national general secretary, Jagat Prakash Nadda, and state election in charge, Rajesh Gupta.

40 two-wheelers impounded from green belt in Industrial Area, Phase I
Chandigarh, January 15
An impounded two-wheeler being loaded on to a truck which was parked in the green belt area of Industrial Area, Phase I, in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The enforcement wing of municipal corporation today impounded 40 two -wheelers, which were parked on the green belt in Industrial Area, Phase I. MC officials said that violators used to park their vehicles on the green belt and it had become an unauthorised parking lot. They had received many complaints in this regard.

Child was murdered, say docs
Dera Bassi, January 15
The missing four-year-old child, whose body was recovered from a well at Behra village, was allegedly murdered before being thrown into the well. The revelation was made by the team of doctors who conducted the autopsy at the Dera Bassi civil hospital.

Admn waits for HC order
Chandigarh, January 15
An impounded two-wheeler being loaded on to a truck which was parked in the green belt area of Industrial Area, Phase I, in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The UT Administration is waiting for the Punjab and Haryana High Court's order to take action against the Chandigarh Golf Club on the lease issue. The two-month time given to the Golf Club management to pay outstanding dues amounting to Rs 6 crore ended today. But as the Golf Club management had filed a petition in the High Court against the new lease deed, the UT is waiting for High Court's order.

Former P’kula ADC acquitted in molestation case
Panchkula, January 15
The then Panchkula ADC, Praveen Kumar, and seven others were acquitted by the Panchkula court in a molestation case that had hit the headlines in 2008. Kumar and others had allegedly thrashed and misbehaved with two women in Morni in a land related case.

Property dealer booked on eve-teasing charge
Chandigarh, January 15
A property dealer, Harry Bajwa, and his colleagues of Sector 28 have been booked for allegedly teasing and harassing a girl, who is residing in the same building where Bajwa lives.

Recovery of 25 live cartridges from car: Case registered
Mohali, January 15 Following the recovery of 25 live cartridges from a Swift car, the Mohali police has registered a case. DSP (City 1) Rajinder Singh Sohal said it was learnt that the vehicle was used in the murder of former MLA of Barnala Malkit Singh Ketu. "Occupants of the car had fled after they met with an accident. The car is registered in the name of Mohinder Singh, a resident of Bilaspur village in Moga district," said DSP Sohal.

City team win hockey title
Chandigarh hockey players in a jubliant mood after winning the trophy at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, Chandigarh. Chandigarh, January 15
The local hockey team today clinched the title at the 58th National School Games, for boys’ (U-17), by defeating Uttar Pradesh in the final match at the Sports Complex, Sector 42.

Delhi beat Punjab to clinch cricket title
Chandigarh, January 15
Delhi won the final cricketmatch of the 58th National School Games, for boys’ (U-16), by defeating Punjab at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, today. After winning the toss, Punjab elected to field first. Batting first, Delhi posted a score of 220 runs in the allotted 35 overs. Kunal Dabas and Ekansh Gulati scored 49 and 46 runs, respectively.
