Dehradun, January 6 Board members of the NGO, Sujata Paul gave special thanks to SSP Kewal Khurana for providing constables from the Police Lines and contributing to the clean-up activity as part of community service. The important aspect of the clean-up drive was cleaning of those areas which had turned into garbage dumps on the premises. This way some 48 bags of garbage were collected from the ground. Elated over the drive, Circle Officer, City, Mamta Vohra said, “The initiative of cleanliness taken by the NGO at the SSP office will be carried forward on a regular basis, for which duties of policemen will be arranged. Mussoorie gears up for Maroj fest
Mussoorie, January 6 The members discussed preparations for the festival at a meeting held here today. It was decided that all the community members will join in the festivities wearing traditional attire. The members decided to sacrifice a goat on January 9. Over Rs 50,000 were collected for celebrating the festival. Executive committee member Mahipal Singh Bisht appealed to the community members to participate actively and contribute generously to make the festival a success. The festival is held in the month of Magh or January. Legend has it that the celebrations began after an ogre called Maroj, whose fear stalked the region, was killed. Another reason for observing the festival is that farmers after tireless work in the fields rest in the winters and indulge in festivities by sacrificing a goat on the occasion. An intoxicant prepared using a herb is distributed among the villagers along with mutton and savoured by the community amid the beating of drums. The community members make it a point to visit their villages on the occasion. They prepare a traditional drink and make merry around a bonfire on the occasion. Traditional food like ‘aska’ and ‘suanla’ is also distributed during the festival. The festival ends with traditional dance sequence called Pandava Nritya.
