4 drug peddlers arrested
Fatehgarh Sahib. January 4 SSP HS Mann said the campaign was launched by the district police against drug peddler, drug smugglers and anti-social elements. He said the Sirhind police had laid a naka for checking at Madhopur chowk. The police signaled a car (PB-10-BG-5409) for checking but instead of stopping the car the driver tried to hit the police personnel and fled away. The police chased the vehicle and ultimately succeeded in nabbing three out of four car occupants. He said during the search operation the police recovered 70 kg poppy husk from the car. The arrested revealed their identity as Kamaljit Singh alias kamala, a resident of Khanna; Lakhbir Singh alias Baba Lakha, a resident of Amloh; and Jasbir Singh alias PP, a resident of Khanna; and Ranjodh Singh, who managed to escape. They admitted that they were involved in the sale of drugs in the district. SSP said the Sirhind Police has also arrested Sukhjeet Singh alias Sita, a resident of Khanna, during checking and recovered1 kg opium from his possession. He said the Mandi Gobindgarh Police arrested gambler Baljit Singh and recovered Rs 32,000 from his possession. |

Faculty development programme concludes
Dera Bassi, January 4 During the closing ceremony, Prof Avtar Singh welcomed the chief guest Ajoy Sharma, secretary, finance, UT. Members from Sri Sukhmani Polytechnic (Dera Bassi, Punjab), Green Hills College of Engineering (Solan, HP), Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering (Dera Bassi, Punjab), and MMU (Mulana) participated in the closing ceremony of video conferencing schedule. More than 50 participants from Ram Devi Jindal (Lalru); PCET (Lalru); Jai Polytechnic (Yamunanagar); Kalpana Chawala Polytechnic (Ambala); Swami Vivekananda Polytechnic (Banur); and Sri Sukhmani Polytechnic College (Dera Bassi) participated in the FDP. During his address, Ajoy Sharma expressed his concern over the quality of technical education in various colleges. He also appreciated the Initiative taken by the MHRD to organise training programmes for various Institutes .He said the faculty from the colleges would be benefited by the training programme. He also informed that the Institute hosted the FDP as per the mandate assigned by the MHRD, Government of India, to National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Sector 26, Chandigarh, to train 20,000 teachers (working in polytechnics) in the states of Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chandigarh. |

People demand implementation of MGNREGA
Dera Bassi, January 4 Government officials said nearly Rs 2.27 crore were received under the scheme and it had been implemented in 52 villages. The funds have been spent on the renovation of natural water bodies, repairing of paths and rural connectivity. But after visiting the villages, where the scheme is in the progress, it was found that the funds were not properly used. People have demanded that the funds should be properly used. Sarpanches of the villages, where the scheme could not be implemented, demanded the implementation of the scheme. —OC |

One killed in road mishap
Banur, January 4 The deceased has been identified as a 26-year-old Hakam, a resident of Harpura, Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh. The victim was a cleaner of the tanker. The accident took place when a chemical loaded tanker which was coming from Pathankot and going to Calcutta rammed into the parked truck near Banur on Kharar road. The victim was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The police had registered a case against the driver of truck under Sections 283 and 304A of the IPC. |
Domestic help sentenced to 7-yr RI
Chandigarh, January 4 The convict had attempted to poison 72-year-old wife of late justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court at her residence in Sector 15. The UT police had arrested the domestic help, Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Talwandi Saboo, for adding mercury to food of his employer. While the incident occurred in October 2011, the case was registered in June 2012 after the police received the CFSL report of the food samples confirming that the chapati that was served by the servant had mercury in it. The case was registered on the complaint of the victim Savinder’s son Amarpal, a resident of Sector 15. He alleged that Kuldeep tried to serve a poisonous substance (mercury) in food to his mother. The complainant’s mother, Savinder Kaur, wife of late justice Sidhu, had suspected foul play before having her food as she noticed something shining on the chapati. She informed the police, which collected three separate food samples. The CFSL report confirmed that the chapati had mercury in it. |

Chandigarh, January 4 Two witnesses, who were jail warders, were cross examined in the court today. BKI chief Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora, convicted for assassinating former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, who are lodged in the Tihar Jail, New Delhi, were brought to the District Courts, Sector 17, amidst tight security. To avoid any untoward incident, a huge number of police personnel were deployed in and around the district courts complex. Former jail warder constable Vinod Kumar and constable Ram Meher deposed in the court today that in January 2004, they were on duty in the Burail Jail outside barracks number 7 when they heard some noise and suspected something fishy going on. They informed the authorities about the same, but no action was taken then. After recording the statements of both jail warders, the court adjourned the hearing till April 22 which is the next date of hearing. Hawara, Bheora and their accomplice Jagtar Singh Tara, along with another murder convict Devi Singh, had made a sensational escape from the Burail jail in January 2004 by digging a 104-foot-long tunnel. While Hawara and Bheora were arrested, Tara and Devi Singh are still at large. Both terrorists have been lodged in the Tihar Jail in connection with the New Delhi blasts case of 2004 and are brought to Chandigarh every time for hearing in the case. |

Two arrested for beating up woman
Chandigarh, January 4 Laxmi (26), a resident of Kishangarh, alleged that she was stripped and beaten up by four-five persons twice in the past six months. She sustained head injuries. The police said she had a dispute with a woman named Tara who along with her friends beat her up. Laxmi alleged that the police did not take action on her complaint when she was beaten up in July. Showing injuries on her head, the woman alleged that she was again beaten up yesterday by the same accused when she had gone to meet someone in Indira Colony. Jaswinder Kaur, in charge, Bapu Dham police post, said the woman had filed the complaint when I was not posted here. She said Tara had filed a complaint against Laxmi alleging that Laxmi had illicit relations with her husband Amarpal. Yashpal, SHO, Mani Majra police station, said they had registered the case after receiving the complaint. The official said the woman did not want to file the complaint but they advised her to do the same as she had sustained injuries. |

Policeman injured
Chandigarh, January 4 ASI Baljinder Singh was on duty at the Sector 23/24 light point. When he signalled a white Ford Figo car to stop, the driver banged the car into the barricade and hit the ASI. The injured ASI received injuries on his right leg and he was rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 where he was discharged after treatment. Officiating DSP (Central) Vinod Kalia said the registration number of vehicle could not be noted down. An FIR has been registered. A case for rash and negligent driving and obstructing the duty of government servant was registered against unidentified person at the Sector 11 police station. |

In-laws booked for harassing woman
Mohali, January 4 In a complaint to the Mohali SSP, Pardeep Kaur, a resident of Gillco Valley, Kharar, said she got married to Harmanpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 42, Chandigarh, in 2008. After her marriage, her husband, mother-in-law, Harjinder Kaur, sister-in-law, Navneet Kaur, and brother-in-law, Parminder Singh, allegedly started subjecting her to cruelty for dowry. The complaint was inquired into by the in charge of the Women Cell, Mohali. After taking the legal opinion of the district attorney, a case under Sections 406 and 498A of the IPC was registered in this regard. |

Retired ASI commits suicide
Mohali, January 4 The former police official, Manak Singh, a resident of Dashmesh Nagar, Ropar, took the extreme step due to a land dispute with two of his brothers. According to reports, after his family members came to know of the alleged suicide bid, they rushed him to a hospital in Ropar from where he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. As his condition deteriorated on the way, he was brought to a private hospital in Mohali where he died. Manak Singh is reported to have left a suicide note in which he blamed his brothers for taking the extreme step. The police has arrested Surinder Singh and Amarjeet Singh, brothers of the deceased, in this connection. |

Three arrested for Sector 7 robbery
Chandigarh, January 4 YP Saggi, the contractor whose house was trespassed, confirmed that Azim Ali worked as a labourer with him, whom he had scolded a few days ago. The incident took place on December 31 when Saggi and his wife had gone to their son’s place in neighbourhood to celebrate New Year’s Eve. His servant Hari was alone at the house when three men came with a gun, a knife and a cane. The burglars could not achieve their motive as they could not open a locked room.
