Delhi gang rape: Students, social organisations hold protest

Ambala, December 23
The students of SA Jain Girls College and members of some other organisations took out a protest march in Ambala City here today. They demanded justice for the 23-year-old girl rape victim of Delhi. They shouted slogans against the government for its inaction and failure to provide security to women.

The girl students in their protest demanded that the accused of the gang rape should be hanged publicly so that in future none could dare to commit such heinous crime.

Mohit Dhiman, president of Yuva Ekta Seva Sangh said the government should take stern action against the accused. He also condemned the government for resorting lathi charge and tear gas on the youths protesting at Raisina Hill who were expressing their anger against police inaction.

The president of Indian Bahujan Sandesh Party Kanta Alaria also submitted a memorandum to tehsildar, Ambala, addressed to Governor, Haryana, on this issue, in which she demanded strict action against the accused of gage rape.

She said in the memorandum that the rape incidents had also increased in Haryana and the women were not feeling themselves safe in the state. She demanded president rule in the state.

Death penalty sought for accused

Fatehgarh Sahib, Dec 23
Hundreds of residents of Sirhind town led by the activists of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Club, Sirhind, today took out candle march against the Delhi gang rape. The protesters raised slogans demanding justice for the gang rape victim.

They termed the incident as most shameful and demanded death penalty for the victims, so that no one could dare for such heinous crime.

Govt schools shine in CGI science fair

Government schools excelled at the science fair organised at Continental Group of Institutes (CGI) Campus at Jalvehra as Government Senior Secondary School, Kalyan, DAV Public School, Patiala, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Rajpura, won the first, second and third prizes, respectively, in physics, biology and computer science and maths competitions.

Maj Gen (retd) BPS Grewal, executive director, Continental Group of Institutes was the chief guest; where as Lt Col Sandhu (retd) presided over and gave away the prizes during the science fair.

As many as 42 science models and more than 20 schools had from across the region participated in the fair.

Congratulating all the participants, Lt Col Sandhu said, “Most of the talent of Punjab lies in the rural areas and the event has been organised to provide scientific knowledge to these students. Such events provide exposure to the rural students on all the development, taking place in the world of science and technology and help in keeping them up to date on the kind of development taking place in the metro cities of India.”

On the occasion, manycultural events comprising bhangra and dances were performed by students. After all the cultural programmes, an aero modelling show by the final year students of Continental Institute of Engineering and Technology (CIET) was also performed during the science fair which was appreciated by all the spectators.

NSS volunteers to assist admn in Jor Mela

Fatehgarh Sahib, December 23
To assist the district administration during Saheedi Jor Mela over 200 NSS volunteers of Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib, are participating in the 7-days camp. The camp was inaugurated by Dr Paramvir Singh, NSS coordinator, Punjabi University Patiala.

Dr Jatinder Singh Sidhu, director principal, in his address inspired the NSS volunteers and said that they should serve the devotees and keep a close watch on the anti social elements.

He said that the NCC cadets of Mata Gujri College would also assist the traffic police. Besides, a blood donation camp will be organised on December 25 by the volunteers, he said.

Dr Paramvir Singh, NSS coordinator highlighted the importance of social service. He also discussed leadership traits. He assigned various projects and duties to the volunteers.

Woman chain snatcher arrested

Zirakpur, December 23
The Zirakpur police has arrested a woman in connection of a chain snatching. The police has also recovered a chain from her possession. As per information, the arrested woman was identified as Karnailo, a resident of Seetanwala, Patiala.

The accused was wanted in a chain snatching case, which was registered against her in the past under Section 382 of the IPC in the Zirakpur police station. She was arrested at a police checkpoint at Zirakpur on Sunday.

Woman dupes many of Rs 3 cr

Mohali, December 23
A 22-year-old woman, Shalini Kapoor, an immigration consultant here, has allegedly run away after defrauding several persons of about Rs 3 crore on the pretext of sending them abroad. Shalini is said to have run away, along with her boyfriend, after closing her office, World Class Enterprises Private Limited, at Phase 9 on December 9.

Confirming the development, Bharat Bhushan, SHO of the Phase 8 Police Station, said around 20 complaints in this connection had already been received.

“Most of the victims belong to Sangrur. We have also received three complaints from Chandigarh and a few from Ludhiana,” said the officer.

Shalini, who originally hails from Dharamsala, had reportedly opened her own office at Phase 9 about 2 years ago after. She was residing in a rented accommodation at Sector 71.

The police said her boyfriend was also lodged in the Patiala Jail and was released from there recently. Shalini had told her acquaintances that she was residing in Australia.

“I have put forward the case to the SSP, Mohali. The case will be registered following the direction of senior authorities,” said Bharat Bhushan. He added that the required action had already been initiated by the police.

2 eve-teasing cases registered

Two cases of eve-teasing were registered in the city yesterday. A snatching incident was also reported in Sector 40, here. Anil Kumar, a resident of Jhuggi No. 491, Block K, Colony No. 5, Chandigarh, eve-teased a girl at the ISBT-17. A case was registered against him at the Sector 17 Police Station. The accused was arrested and later released on bail.

In another incident of eve-teasing reported in Mani Majra, the complainant said Zahir Aalam, a resident of Dera Sahib, Mani Majra, eve-teased her. A case has been registered against him at the Mani Majra Police Station.

Meanwhile, Inderpreet Kaur, a resident of Sector 37, Chandigarh, said occupants of a car snatched her purse containing two debit cards, one mobile phone, driving licence and Rs 1,600 in Sector 40-A, Chandigarh, yesterday.

A case has been registered against the miscreants at the Police Station-39 and further investigation has been initiated. — TNS

Driver held on extortion charge

Chandigarh, December 23
Narinder Singh (35), a former driver of a businessman, Ajit Jain, was arrested for sending him a threat letter demanding extortion money of Rs 5 crore from the latter. The police said the accused had threatened to throw acid on Jain and his son if they failed to pay the money. Police officials said the driver, a native of Amritsar, was sacked by Jain a few months ago.

The officials said the complainant, a resident of Sector 33, had brought the letter to the knowledge of the UT police four days ago. The case was being investigated from all angles. The police had also gathered the details of all employees of the businessman. The driver will be produced in the District Courts tomorrow. — TNS

Gursharan wins golf tournament

Gursharan Singh of Alberta (Canada) declared winner of the gross category carding a three-day tally of 153 on the final day of the Eighth Chandigarh Golfing Tour concluded on the par-72 greens of the Panchkula Golf Club here. Gursharan shared the best gross score in both first and third rounds. The overall individual nett trophy went to Canada’s Col Jaswant Singh Virk with 120 points.
