Rs 43 crore earmarked for airstrip expansion
Pithoragarh, November 27 "We will have to make our border airstrips fully equipped with modern technology to lure tourists into these districts," said the Chief Minister. He also announced the opening of law department at local PG college and sanction of a road from Charma to Bhagichaura
in the district. The Chief Minister said the students of Seemant Engineering College at Pithoragarh would be exempted from Rs 10,000 fee during their study period. "We have also sanctioned Rs 22 crore for the drinking water schemes of the district," said he. Later speaking in a public meeting at Gangolihat, the Chief Minister said his government would send special proposals to the Central Government for sufficient roads, drinking schemes, health centres and schools to the backwards areas of the district as development was his top priority. "We have given special priority to the areas where the developmental infrastructure is lacking in the state," said he. He inaugurated a 20 km road from Basikhet to Kharoli and another 4 km road from Bankot to Brishkholi in Gangolihat subdivision of the district. "The roads have been completed with Rs 333.40 lakh under the budget of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sarak Yojana," said Narayan Ram Arya, Congress MLA from Gangolihat. The Chief Minister also sanctioned a drinking water scheme for Berinag town, said Arya, the local Congress MLA. Besides this road, the Chief Minister inaugurated a total of 8 projects for the block and announced the opening of an ITI at Pankhu in Berinag and allocation of funds for the construction of building for polytechnic college at Ganai Gagoli and Rastriya Inter-college, Dasain Thal. |

Dehradun, November 27 The district police is also to take care of the security arrangements of a large number of VIPs who are expected to participate in the wedding ceremony of the daughter of Union Minister of Water Resources Harish Rawat on November 28. Haridwar SSP Arun Mohan Joshi today held a meeting of the police officials and gave them instructions about the security arrangements. He said Haridwar had been divided into eight zones and 31 sub-zones for security purposes. He told the police force to be vigilant and alert. He instructed the policemen that all suspected persons and objects should be checked and senior officials be informed immediately. He also said that in case of any untoward incident, magistrates and senior officials should be taken into confidence. Joshi said traffic should be properly managed and parking of vehicles should only be allowed at the designated parking places. He also instructed the police to be vigilant about any mischief monger regarding the Gurdwara Gyan Godri controversy at Har-ki-Pauri. He told the policemen that any kind of dereliction of duty would not be tolerated. They had also been told be courteous with pilgrims and visitors. |

Dehradun, November 27 Addressing a press conference in Haridwar today, Sarv Pradesh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee member Inderjeet Singh Chug said Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna was in constant touch with them and they did not want to create communal tension over the Gyan Godri issue. He disclosed that since 2003 the prabandhak committee had been struggling for the reconstruction of Gyan Godri Gurdwara that was linked to the life of first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev. He said National Minorities Commission member Charan Singh Josh in 2006 had visited Haridwar and investigated the Gyan Godri Gurdwara and asked the state administration to do the needful towards the reconstruction of the gurdwara. Chug said former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokharial Nishank too was asked by the Minorities Commission in 2011 to act on the matter but the former failed to act. "But we are now hopeful that the Congress government will hand over Gyan Godri Gurdwara to us", Chug said. He also pointed that Sarv Pradesh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee wanted to maintain communal harmony at all costs. "We are for a peaceful solution to the Gyan Godri issue and do not want to vitiate the atmosphere", he asserted. He also criticised Sikh leader Gurucharan Singh Babbar for giving statements that could lead to trouble in the society. Harvinder Singh, Baldev Singh and Kamaljeet Singh were also present at the press conference.

Rs 10 lakh demanded for riot victims' kin
Dehradun, November 27 He said a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each should be given to the next of kin of the innocent people killed in the riots and that cases be registered against those responsible for the riots. Furkan Ahmed Qureshi from Doiwala also met the Governor with a delegation and presented a memorandum demanding that problems of backward castes, minorities, Scheduled Castes and tribes should be resolved. |

MP seeks land to set up doppler radar
Dehradun, November 27 He referred to the recent deaths and destruction in the Uttarkashi and Ukhimath cloudbursts in Uttarakhand. He said if doppler radars were set up in places like Mussoorie and Nainital, cloud movement could be effectively tracked in the state and prompt measures could be undertaken. He also demanded a
uniform compensation policy for natural disaster-hit places. He said while Uttarkashi got more compensation, a similar compensation package was denied to Ukhimath. |

Honorarium for ASHA, ANM workers
Dehradun, November 27 Along with tracking the number of pregnant women (12-20 weeks) in their districts, the ASHA and ANM workers will also keep an eye on the number of abortions taking place in villages and give an accurate picture of the declining sex ratio for which they will be given an honorarium of Rs 500 per month. “We have decided to involve the ASHA and ANM workers in the implementation of the Act. They will fill the information in the forms and give information to the CMO every month. This will help us track the sex ratio at the village level,” said Dr Saroj Naithani, nodal officer, PC PNDT Act. |
Forest teams reach lower valleys to check poachers
Pithoragarh, November 27 According to Forest Department sources, the patrolling teams have been sent to the Himalayan valleys of Boling, Sum Dung, Umchia and Karto in the Dharma valley in Dharchula subdivision where Himalayan animals are seen coming down to lower valleys every year. "Musk deer and snow leopards are poached in this valley which is known from past records," said MC Kandpal, range officer of the Dharchula who is leading the team. According to the forest officer, as soon as the snowfall begins, these rare animals along with Himalayan black bear come down to the lower valleys to escape the chilling cold at their higher habitats. "The poachers await this opportunity to kill the animals by firing the lower valley grass lands, compelling the animal either to come to their trap or fall into deep gorges," said the forest officer. "The patrolling teams were sent to these lower valley areas after the department came to know that poachers have started burning lower meadows to encircle the animals coming down from their higher habitats," said Pithoragarh DFO T Sambandhanam. |
Indian Academy students shine in GK exams
Dehradun, November 27 The school had sponsored 235 students of Class I to IV for the All-India General Knowledge Intelligence Contest for the pre-junior category. A total of 127 participants scored 60 per cent and above; 28 secured 80 per cent and more. The Central Institute of General Knowledge Learning has awarded a medal each to the two toppers of the school - Kartikey Dobhal and Aditya Dev Yadav (both of Class I) for their meritorious performance. They have scored 92
per cent and 90 per cent, respectively. CM to open seminar on geo-spatial technology at IIRS
Dehradun, November 27 It is being organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in association with the Uttarakhand Space Application Centre, the Department of Science and Technology, Uttarakhand, and the IIRS, Dehradun. It aims at mainstreaming applications of the geospatial technology as an effective decision-making tool for governance. Secretary, Science and Technology, RC Pathak will deliver the keynote address. USAC Director MM Kimothi said geo-spatial technologies could play a significant role in improving governance through better decision making, effective implementation and real-time analysis. Several states in the country were now using GIS-based applications for good governance and efficient management. He said, “Uttarakhand has a huge potential for the adoption of geo-spatial technologies in various sectors such as natural resource management, disaster management, rural development, municipal governance and tourism.” The Union Government is using the technology in projects such as the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme, the Agricultural Resources Information System, the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and the National Land Record Modernisation Programme. The technology has also found acceptability for diverse applications such as urban planning, power, land records, spatial-based agriculture and forest information. The seminar will deliberate on issues such as mainstreaming geospatial technologies in Uttarakhand, geospatial technologies for good governance, geospatial applications for natural resource management and building a GIS roadmap for Uttarakhand. |
Research is real adventure: Canadian professor
Pithoragarh, November 27 “The research is not only to get expertise on any topic or subject, but it is real adventure for the researcher, which can not be matched by any assigned adventure trip,” said Prof Levit. The professor was speaking to research scholars of Uttarakhand Open University on the topic of ‘Research methodology’ at Haldwani last evening. According to Prof Levit, research works can be divided into two categories- first the qualitative research and second quantitative research. “If proper methodology is adopted by a research scholar, the research work that has quantitative nature can be given a qualitative edge as well,” he asserted. Emphasising the importance of language and local dialects in producing a research work, Prof Levit that every language and dialect in the world was equally important for research. |
Women most vulnerable to climate change: Expert
Dehradun, November 27 Prof VK Jain of the university said as women were the most vulnerable groups affected by climate change, ways had to be devised to protect them from the its adverse impact. “Women are most likely groups to suffer from climate change and they also bear a disproportionate burden of climate change consequences like attack on traditional food sources. However, they are most capable of creating change and adaptation within their communities,” said Jain. Doon University is a member of the action group that will give its recommendations to the state government as part of the state government’s action plan. |
