Cutting-edge wit
Actor Abhay Deol, praised for his role as the modern Devdas in Dev D, says listening to one’s instinct is the key to success in life…
Nonika Singh

In his films he might be suitably understated, almost to the point of being self-effacing. But in person the gifted actor Abhay Deol is candid and upfront, bristling with a sardonic sense of humour. Speaking at the final day, in a special session of Film Bazar organised by NFDC, to most questions his answers are cutting and quick.

So the actor who found his way into the hearts of audiences with his part of a degenerative lover in the much-acclaimed film Dev D, a modern take on Devdas, has no hesitation in saying that he is no fan of either the character Devdas or the book by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

“My challenge,” he states, “lay in creating empathy for the negative character who was no more than a MCP.” On not getting any awards for his films including Dev D for which, incidentally, he was not even nominated, his answer is cryptic.

“My work is validated precisely for I haven’t got any award.” On a more serious note, he says, “You get awards only if you are part of that particular magazine family. Actually, actors go to award functions only if either they are being given an award or they are being paid.”

On matters of money, Abhay, who is taking baby steps into production wouldn’t mind creating a film in the garb of commercial get-up so he could get finances, yet with content he feels strongly about. So rom-coms, romance with action, and the classical genres he doesn’t mind foraying into. Indeed, he has made the brave and bold choices. However, Abhay thinks as long as he listened to others he made wrong decisions and only encountered obstructions. “Listening to one’s instinct,” he feels, “is the key to success.”

On the gamut of characters that he has portrayed as in Oye Lucky Oye, well he relates to ambition and to obsessive characters. Among the most difficult parts that he has played he thinks is of the South-Indian bureaucrat in Shanghai. Why? “For in India there is no place where you can find training for accents. I caught hold of a South-Indian willing to give up one month of his life and as I oscillated between accent and emotion; it became rather arduous.”

As now the actor of substance has become a star too, he is aware of the pitfalls of stardom and how it can eat you up. But belonging to a filmy family, having watched stardust up close and personal, he is kind of prepared for the ups and downs.

By the way like true stars, did he ever think of having a six pack? He laughs and quips, “I am thinking about it. Actually I could get more money.”

But money despite his claims of “being broke in periods of struggle” we all know is the least of his concerns. Moving into life open-minded, taking the path few care to take, saying what he wants to, presenting himself the way he is, completely unmindful of being politically correct, he is the Deol one needs to watch out for!

Incidentally, among his favourite actors none of the Deols figure, but yes Peter Sellers does.

Root of the matter
English musician Punjabi MC believes one does not necessarily need to stay at a place to be attached to it…
Jasmine Singh

beat it: Punjabi MC

Bollywood is a definite stop-over for all Punjabi singers. But when it comes to Rajinder Singh Rai, Punjabi MC, the English musician is not in a hurry to join the brigade. In Chandigarh to perform at Blue Blazer, the Mundiya Toh Bach Key Rahin singer wants no one to obstruct his passion.

“Singing is my passion and hobby. When you work with someone, it is obvious that people will dictate terms that will hamper your creativity; something that I don’t want,” says this Punjabi MC, explaining why he isn’t so keen on working in Bollywood. “However, if I have some good offer in hand, I would definitely go for it.”

Just in case you don’t know, Rajinder Singh adopted his stage name. The man has his own style - fusing bhangra and hip hop. The word ‘collaboration’ finds a natural mention. “It is nice to see that many artists these days are collaborating. It is good for the music labels and for music as well,” he adds.

Punjabi MC likes to visit twice a year and the influence is evident in his next album — 56 Districts — that releases in 2013. “This album is dedicated to Punjab and Pakistan; it is a good blend of Sufi and Hip-hop,” says this musician born in England but still bound to his roots.

Talking about roots here, Punjabi MC wishes to differ a bit. “One doesn’t have to be close to a place to love it; one doesn’t have to be living in a place to be attached to the roots.” It comes naturally to a singer who has created cracking Punjabi chart-busters.

“I don’t worry about youngsters moving out of Punjab; they would still be in love with their roots. I am an example in this regard, I am far away from my roots but I keep coming back to them time and again.”

Well, it isn’t the man alone; many global artists come to Punjab to trace the real foot-tapping music. “You can dance to Punjabi music, which makes it global. It has a powerful influence on musicians the world over,” he adds, sharing a bit on how he plans to meet the writers in Punjab in the hope of finding something new and really Punjabi.

Name game

My passport will have Kareena Kapoor Khan as my name. Everyone knows me as Kareena Kapoor. I have always been open my relationship and my new name celebrates the fact that I am happy, in love and married after five years of being in a relationship with Saif. Marriage has not changed my career one bit. Saif never asks me about my films.

The Begum of Pataudi

I love my association with Saif's royal family but in my heart and mind my mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore is the Begum of Pataudi. I am happy to be part of a heritage now. It is a responsibility and I am honoured.

Working with Aamir Khan

I am lucky to have done two consecutive films with him. Talaash is a special film and I have important role in the movie. Indian cinema has not seen a movie like this before.

Happy in his own space

King size: Shah Rukh Khan

The tiff between Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had invited a lot of speculations back in 2008. It was Salman's girlfriend Katrina Kaif's birthday bash where the two actors had a verbal spat.

It's been four years now but the ice between them has not melted yet. Recently, Katrina Kaif for the first time got the opportunity of working with Shah Rukh Khan for the Yash Chopra directed Jab Tak Hai Jaan, where the two seemed to have a cordial relation.

On the other hand, Salman too was invited for the premiere of the film and he for the first time crossed path with SRK. This incident stirred reports of a patch-up between the two stars.

However, recently SRK has denied these reports. When asked by a reporter at a press conference whether the animosity between the two have ended, SRK said, "Bachpan se poochte aa rahe ho yeh sawal...Ab toh bade ho jaoo. (Please grow up...You people have always been asking this question)."

All the three Khans were present at the premiere of this film and it was being speculated that Aamir had tried to get things back to normal between the other two Khans. Also present at the party was Amitabh Bachchan who later tweeted, "Danced my shoes off with all the youngsters...An amazing evening...Spending time with Salman, Aamir, Shahrukh, Katrina and Anushka."

When SRK was asked about Bachchan's tweet, he said, "If Amitji has tweeted it then you all ask him when you meet him in a press conference. There is no patch up or XYZ. Even I read about it in newspapers. Whatever is written in your newspaper please don't believe it."

The film on the other hand, has been doing really well at the box-office. It clashed at the theatres with Son of Sardar which features Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha. There had been some serious issues as well with Ajay Devgan Productions taking legal action against Yash Raj Films for allegedly restricting SOS from being screened at the theatres.

JTHJ has very recently collected 100 crores worldwide that has left SRK elated. Expressing his joy, he said, "I am happy that the film has earned Rs 100 crore worldwide. It is wonderful that the film is doing great. There were some issues in between despite that the film has worked. This film is very special to Katrina, Anushka and me."

Taylor Lautner talks Twilight

Desirable dude: Taylor Lautner

Taylor Lautner has become as famous as Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. We have to admit that he looks hot and his physique is phenomenal. He talks about playing a werewolf and more.

Your evolving look in the Twilight series has been much talked about. How do you manage to keep up to it?

My character grew into a powerful werewolf in the Twilight series. How I manage is by following a simple strategy: Eat right and follow a smart, strategic workout regime. Maximise your genetic potential!

How easy/hard is it to be a hot werewolf? This being the last installment of the Twilight series, tell us what's special about the film?

Hot Vampire!! I just think seeing everything come to a close as a whole is moving. I know it's very general, but it's been such a long ride and there's been so much going on, this one really wraps up nicely. It has a very high point, it's super epic and I think it'll be emotional for everyone to see.

You are tagged and described as the sexiest/hottest/ most desirable actor. How do you feel when people tell you this? What's the best compliment you have ever received?

I find it amazing, the intensity of people liking it. It's crazy. It's an elemental thing that werewolves are connected to which I still don't understand.

Are you superstitious?

No I am not. I believe in God.

In general, are you fond or scared of wolves? Had you ever dreamt of playing one and imagined that the character would become such a hit?

No, not in my wildest dreams.

Problem of plenty

Busy bee: Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone is apparently the busiest actress in Bollywood. She has allotted nearly 15-180 days to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Raam Leela and this has jeopardised the schedules of Chennai Express and Jawaani Deewani along with promotions for Race 2. Hope she sorts out her date mess.

A much better position, one with all the responsibility and power that you always wanted, is now within reach, and to that end, Mars will help you.

Your feelings for your partner run deep. Even if you think they know how much you care, they'll love hearing you say the words. Take a moment to tell them you love them.
