Pollution levels shoot up after Divali

The campaigns for a ‘Green Divali’ by the district administration, the police, NGOs and other social organisations did not seem to have much affect on city residents who celebrated a noisy Divali this year, increasing pollution levels.

An 11-year-boy was crushed to death by a sand-laden tractor-trailer on the Lohara road this evening.

The cash-strapped Ludhiana Municipal Corporation managed to earn Rs 1.5 crore from the auction of 10 shops located near Jawaddi village. Interestingly, the highest bid went as high as Rs 92,000 per sq yard, whereas the reserve price for the same shop measuring 18 sq yard was Rs 20,200.

Youth dies in road mishap

Two women fell unconscious following a clash between two groups of riot victims at the CRPF colony in Dugri area here today.

Dengue to subside with dip in temperature, say experts

With more than 160 confirmed cases of dengue, the district health department has now pinned hopes on falling temperature. Experts say isolated cases of dengue are expected to be reported till November-end and have advised residents to take preventive measures.

Youth motivated to stay away from drugs

The Youth Akali Dal organised a cycle-rickshaw rally to motivate youngsters to stay away from drugs. The "Halla Bol" rally, in which youth including the physically-challenged participated, started at Municipal Corporation’s parking lot and culminated at the Mini-Secretariat here.

Ludhiana: Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru’s birth anniversary, celebrated all over India as Children's Day, saw various competitions being organised at SDP Senior Secondary School. Students of the primary wing participated in these competitions including story telling and cartoon making. MD Sarita Goyal distributed sweets to the children and inspired them to follow the footsteps of Chacha Nehru.

The Machhiwara police claimed to have arrested two persons and recovered 20 stolen mobile phones from their possession.

Cricket: Khalsa College eves triumph

Fine all-round performance by Parveen Khan ( 97 runs and three for 3) guided Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, to script an easy 82-run victory over Government College for Women, Sector 11, Chandigarh, and emerge as champions for the third consecutive year in the Panjab University Inter-College Cricket Tournament for women played at PU ground, Chandigarh, recently. Panjab University campus, Chandigarh, secured third position.

Three pugilists of the GTB Institute of Management and Technology, Dakha, brought laurels for the college by winning three top positions, including a gold medal, during the Punjab Technical University Inter-Institute Boxing Championship.
