25 power projects await Centre’s nod
Dehradun, November 10 These proposals have been placed by Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL), the National Hydro Power Corporation, the Satluj Hydro-Power Project and some private companies. Among these, the work on the Lakhwar hydro-power project of 300 MW has also been stopped. The project will generate power of more than 600 million units. Managing Director, UJVNL, GP Patel said “Besides other projects, Lakhwar is very important for us. Many states such as Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and the Centre will have their share in power generation. Besides this, Delhi will also get drinking water from the project. But unlike Vyasi, this project is awaiting the MoEF clearance. If this project gets cleared, then the state will hugely benefit from the additional power generation. With Vyasi and Lakhwar, the state will no longer need to purchase power from other states or outside sources. He said hydro-power projects where forest land more than 5 hectare was not required, the department did not need not to take permission from the MoEF, but from regional office, Lucknow. It is much easier and faster to get No-Objection Certificate from Lucknow on the proposals. But, he added, the state could not depend on small hydro-power projects because of huge power demand in wake of population growth and industrialisation in the state. According to sources, Chairman, UJVNL and former chief secretary Subhash Kumar, who was earlier visiting the MoEF office in Delhi and pushing forward the case for clearance of hydro-power proposals has shifted his concentration in getting the operational projects repaired, which got damaged during heavy rain this monsoon. He, however, visited the sites of some small hydro-power projects in the state. Patel said, “The department has hugely benefited from the experience of Subhash Kumar with whose intervention, we have been able to get many projects cleared, including Vyasi which had been stuck up for many years.” |
