Jalandhar, November 3
Banking big time on the newly launched Pravesh Project to overcome the discrepancies left by the ambitious Parho Punjab Project, the Education Department has begun the training of primary schoolteachers across the state.

Given the fact that despite its successful implementation across the state, the Parho Punjab Project had failed to fulfil some basic educational requirements for students, the new project will undertake a new play-way method to ensure better understanding and an interactive environment in government classrooms.

The five-day training programme will continue till November 7.

As many as 42,000 teachers across 13,449 government primary schools in the state will receive training as per the ongoing programme.

Two days of English training classes and the rest days for various other subjects will be included in the training programme.

Talking to The Tribune, Kahan Singh Pannu, Director-General, School Education (DGSE), said: “The Pravesh Project has been launched with a view to making up for the shortcomings of the Parho Punjab Project. There is some percentage of mediocre students in every class. It was noticed that many average students were not able to attain the basic milestones of education due to barriers like language, etc. But the new project will ensure a lighter classroom environment with thrust on practical aspects. It will make learning easier for average students and will also work to further hone the skills of the already bright students.”

While the project would not involve any infrastructural upgrades, the DGSE said the project would involve teachers working on new education modules for which new teaching and learning material would be provided.

The project would also include field visits for students based on the curriculum.

In Jalandhar, the training of more than 360 primary schoolteachers began across 19 blocks of the district.

Dr Davinder Singh Boha, assistant director of the Parvesh Project, Punjab, toured four blocks (East - 3, Nakodar 1, Nakodar 2 and Shahkot 2) of the district to review the ongoing training programme.

A total of 58,710 students of 610 primary schools in the district would benefit from the Pravesh Project.

Dal Khalsa urges UN to intervene
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, November 3
Slamming Indian system for failing to prosecute high and mighty perpetrators of the November 84 carnage, the radical group, Dal Khalsa, has called upon the UN to intervene for the sake of justice.

The organisation, along with other like-minded bodies, today blamed the Indian system for bitterly failing to deliver justice to the victims of the November 1984 massacre of Sikhs even after 28 years of its occurrence.

While judicial process has begun to show some results in bringing the perpetrators to book in the cases of innocent killings of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002, there has been no sign of justice in the case of violence against the Sikhs, the representatives of the Dal Khalsa said.

They were of the view that how could Sikhs expect justice from that state which allowed the killings of innocent Sikhs.

Hundreds of activists associated with the Dal Khalsa’s youth wing named “Sikh Youth of Punjab” led by its president Ranbir Singh today held a demonstration protesting against the carnage and denial of justice. They gathered at the city’s busiest Guru Nanak Mission Chowk to convey their concern and message to the passers-by.

Earlier, they performed ardas at a local Gurdwara to pay homage to those who had become victims of anti-Sikh riots.

The activists were carrying black flags and placards on which it was imbibed “killings in November 1984 were not riots but genocide”. To draw attention of the people, they had a long banner on which it was written “the state engineered the November 84 genocide, who will book the state. UN should intervene”.

Addressing the protestors, HS Dhami, leader of the radical party, said the justice was still a far cry.

He said so far, by all standards, the international community had let down the Sikh people.

Through its missions in Delhi, the UN and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council were witness to the black days of November when Sikhs were slaughtered, maimed, women dishonoured and children orphaned.

“To the best of our knowledge, no official statement or record exist admonishing India’s poor political and police governance during that particular period,” he said.

Kanwar Pal Singh, a spokesperson for the party, said: “Howsoever late it may be, we still seek intervention of world powers to punish the guilty. The UN should investigate the role of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the then Home Minister PV Narasimha Rao in absentia for allegedly engineering the massacre”.

Posters titled “Who is guilty” addressed to civil society were distributed among all passers-by.

The questions that were raised include “do you know about the barbarism of the Congress, the RSS and hooligans of Delhi? Is India a civilised society? Is India a secular country?

Leader of the SAD (Panch Pardani) Harpal Singh Cheema and Baba Ajit Singh Lohgarh also participated in the demonstration.
