Two-day police remand for victim’s mother-in-law

The local court sent Neelam Saini, mother of the murder accused Rahul Saini, to two-day remand today. Neelam Saini was produced in the court in connection with the murder of her daughter-in-law Hapreet Kaur, aka Seema, who was allegedly strangulated to death by Rahul on Sunday evening at their rented accommodation in Phase 11, Mohali.

Seema's father Davinder Singh had alleged that Neelam used to harass his daughter for dowry. Meanwhile, the police has also recovered the couple's five-year-old son Karanveer, who was dropped at Neelam's house by Rahul after allegedly committing the crime.

Sources said Karanveer did not prove any help in the case. "On being asked where his mother was, Karanvir told us that she was with maternal grandmother. He also said that his father (Rahul) brought him at Ludhiana in the morning, which indicated that Rahul had murdered his wife during the late hours of Sunday night," said the police. Rahul Saini is still at large. "Raids are being conducted at various places. He would be nabbed soon," said SP (City) Swarndeep Singh.

Mohali DSP moves plea in court

Mohali Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Raka Gira, who was arrested last year in a bribe case by the CBI, moved an application in court today seeking discharge from the corruption case. The application was placed before the CBI court of Vimal Kumar, which fixed November 21 as the date for CBI to file reply and argue on the charges.

While moving the application in court, Raka Gira stated that the CBI has no jurisdiction to register a case of corruption on her as she is from Punjab, and as per rules the CBI can only book central government employees.

The investigating agency had arrested Gira on July 25 last year on charges of demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a builder for settling his case. The CBI had laid a trap for Gira after a Mullanpur-based builder KK Malhotra filed a complaint against her.

5 held for planning robbery

The Chandigarh Police has arrested five persons who were planning to loot a jewellery shop in Mani Majra. One pistol, two knives and sharp-edged weapons were recovered from the gang.

Police received a tip-off that five persons, identified as Sonu from Bathinda, Ishan Mohammed and Sanjeev from Mani Majra, Raju Parihar from Panchkula, and Teg Bahadur from Mansa Devi Complex, were sitting at the rear side of a store and were planning to commit a robbery.

A special team raided the spot and nabbed the accused. A case was registered at Mani Majra police station. The police said all the five had a criminal record and were wanted in several theft cases registered in the tricity.

Two booked for fraud

Fake doctor Sandeep Sharma, who had stunned the Tricity in 2008 after running Shubham Hospital in Sector 20, Panchkula, While having a fake degree, is in the news again.

The UT police registered a case of fraud against him.Acting on the complaint of SM Kurup, Chief Manager, Bank of Maharastra, Sector 17 C, the police has booked Sandeep Sharma and Geeta Ram Thakur, other accused, for cheating and criminal conspiracy under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120B of the IPC.

As per the complaint, Sandeep took loan from the bank in the year 2006 and 2007 by giving the security of Flat number 218-B, 219-A, 219-B, Basant Vihar, NAC, Zirakpur. Sandeep and Geeta Ram had submitted forged documents of the flats.

In 2008, the Panchkula police had booked Sandeep in a cheating case. He was accused of illegally operating upon patients by holding free eye check-up camps. As the investigations proceeded, frauds committed by him, while availing loans, were exposed and amid high drama the investigations were shifted to the state crime bureau. Following a complaint of the Panchkula Civil Surgeon the Panchkula police had sealed Shubham Hospital on January 30, 2008.

Sources said by submitting fake documents Sandeep Sharma took a loan of Rs 2 crore from Punjab National Bank, Sector 16, Chandigarh, Rs 1 crore from Bank of India, Sector 16, Chandigarh, Rs 1 crore from Punjab and Sind Bank, Rs 40 lakh from Oriental Bank, Mani Majra and Rs 1 crore from Corporation Bank, Chandigarh. The loan was allegedly taken after submitting fake certificates and documents. Sandeep Sharma had been booked in a number of cases of fraud and cheating by Chandigarh police during 2010 and 2011.

Two constables injured in accident

Two constables, posted with the Cheetah Squad of the Police Control Room, sustained injuries in an accident on Wednesday.

The accident occurred near Sector 21/22 dividing road where Parminder Singh and Harish Singh were on duty. An Innova car, bearing registration number DL-4CN-9701, hit the them while they were patrolling on their motorcycle. Both the constables were rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. The police has registered a case of rash and negligent driving under Sections 279, 337 of the IPC. Accused Baldev Raj was arrested and was released on bail later. In another incident, a car hit head-constable Ashok Kumar at a police check post near Sector 32. The victim was taken to a hospital.

However, the matter was resolved and no case was registered. — TNS

Sunil to face Yogesh in final

Top seed Sunil K Sipaeya will face Yogesh Phogat in the final of men's category during the ongoing CLTA-AITA Chandigarh Open Men's and Women's Championship.

Sunil defeated the third seed Brahmjot Singh in a one-sided semifinal while the second seed Yogesh Phogat faced some resistance from wild card entry Allan Gomes and defeated him in three sets.

In the women's category, top seed Tarranum Handa defeated Victoria Chehal in straight sets while third seed Natallia upset second seed Manya Nagpal by 6-4 and 6-3.

Results:

Men's semifinal round (singles)- Sunil K Sipaeya bt Brahmjot Singh by 6-1, 6-2; Yogesh Phogat bt Allan Gomes by 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Semifinal round (doubles)- Yogesh Phogat and Suraj Beniwal bt Brahmjot Singh and Gurvinder Mann by 6-4, 6-7; Suraj Desai and Allan Gomes bt Hardeep Singh Bedi and Rishab Dev by 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.

Women's semifinal round (singles)- Tarranum Handa bt Victoria Chehal by 6-2, 6-4; Natallia Khaniejo bt Manya Nagpal by 6-4, 6-3.

Semifinal round (doubles)- Manya Nagpal and Tarranum Handa bt Shehnaz Singh and Anukriti Choudhari by 5-7, 6-3, 10-3; Victoria Chehal and Priyanka Rawat bt Bhawya Wadhwan and Aashima Garg by 6-3, 6-1.

City girls make it to U-16 soccer team

Bringing proud to the City beautiful, two local junior female soccer players made it to the final squad of Indian women's (U-16) football squad today. Anika and Somaya of Scared Heart School, Sector 26, and trainees of the Football Stadium, Sports Complex, Sector 42, have secured a place in the final list after attending a two-month long camp at Gandhinagar. Notably, Somaya has been named as the skipper of the squad.

The selected team will represent the nation in the AFC U-16 Women's Football Championship 2013 (qualifiers). Earlier,the tournament was to be held in Colombo from November 6 to 11 but due to bad weather it was postponed.

"I am happy that after boys now these girls are achieving success. The girls were practising hard from the last three years and now they have reached on a great platform," said Harjinder Singh, former skipper of Indian football team.

The new dates for the championship will be announced later. India is clubbed with Uzbekistan, Iran and hosts Sri Lanka. The team will play Iran in the opening match of the tournament.
