Lineman electrocuted
Dera Bassi, October 28 Ram’s body remained hanging on the transformer for over two hours before his colleagues pulled it down. As per reports, Nambardar Jagdip Singh had filed a complaint of power failure, following which Ram Prasad reached the transformer, situated in the fields near Bakkarpur village to rectify it around 10 am. Powercom SDO, Balwinder, said Ram had climbed up on the transformer after switching off the supply. As he was tightening the loose blade of the conductor, he or his tool got in contact with the live wire. He got electrocuted and died on the spot. When asked if the supply was not fully cut off, SDO said the department employees often remove the normal faults without disconnecting the whole line to avoid power failure in the whole area. However, an inquiry has been marked, the report of which would be sent to higher officials, he added. Ram Prasad, hailing from Nepal, is survived by four daughters and one son. The body of a 22-year-old youth, Surjeet Kumar, of Sector 49, Chandigarh, who had drowned in the Ghaggar river on Thursday evening while immersing an idol of Goddess Durga, was found this morning. Divers and relatives of the victim were searching for the body for the past four days. The body has been handed over to relatives of the victim. The incident occurred when over 25 devotees of Sector 49, Chandigarh, had gone to immerse an idol of Goddess Durga in the Ghaggar. The victim slipped into the river and was missing since then. Divers were called from Ropar but they could not find the victim. |

Two drug peddlers arrested
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 28 Addressing the media persons here today SSP, HS Mann, said the police had set up a naka at T-point on the Hansali Road and was checking the vehicles. The police signalled a swift car No. PB-11AW-7099 for checking but the driver fled away. The police chased the vehicle and nabbed the miscreants. The accused were then taken in custody and revealed their identity. The SSP said Karanvir, one of the accused, claimed himself to be a constable with the Haryana police. He said that during checking of vehicle the police has recovered smack and narcotic powder along with .38 bore revolver. The accused have been booked under the NDPS Act and it was being verified that whether one of the accused was constable or not. The Haryana police has been informed regarding the issue, said he. |
