Durban, October 17 Opener Jacques Rudolph led the Titans innings, blasting a brisk 56-ball 63 to help them post a challenging 172 for four after Auckland won the toss and decided to field at Kingsmead. The Titans then returned to bowl out Auckland for 113 in 18.1 overs to inch towards a semifinal berth. They will next take on IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders at Cape Town on Sunday. Auckland were 58 for six in 8.3 overs but a 45-run partnership for the last wicket between Andre Adams (30) and Micheal Bates (14) delayed the inevitable. For Titans, Ethy Mbhalati and Alfonso Thomas took three wickets each giving away 26 and 18 runs respectively, while Cornelius de Villiers, Eden Link and RE van der Merwe grabbed one apiece. Earlier, Rudolph blasted seven fours in his 56-ball innings and forged a 74-run opening partnership with Henry Davids (36), to set the foundation for the Titans. He anchored the innings, adding 26 and 33 runs for the second and third wickets with M Van Jaarsveld (13) and Farhaan Behardien (48), respectively. Farhaan provided the late charge to take the Titans across the 150-mark. His 23-ball innings was studded with one four and three sixes. For Auckland Kyle Mills, Michael Bates and Azhar Mahmood took one wicket each. Rudolph and Davids gave Titans a blistering start as they picked up boundaries at will from the start. Rudolph started the proceedings, sending Mills across the cover region in the second ball itself. He repeated the treatment to Bates in the next over, while David also joined in with a drive past extra cover. — PTI |
KKR eliminated in rain-marred match Cape Town, October 17 The Knight Riders needed to win this match at any cost, having suffered reverses in their first two outings against Delhi Daredevils and Auckland Aces, but luck deserted Gautam Gambhir and his men on their most important day. In the process, they became the first team to be eliminated from the tournament proper. A downpour followed by continues drizzle ensured the game ended 14 overs into the Scorchers innings — they were 91 for two at that stage. The Australian outfit was asked to bat first after the coin landed in Gambhir's favour at the Kingsmead. Pace spearhead Brett Lee vindicated Gambhir's decision, removing the experienced Herschelle Gibbs in the very first over of the match. The South African got impatient a tad too early as he tried to loft one over the infield only to be caught by Iqbal Abdulla at covers. After the early blow, Shaun Marsh and Simon Katich added 70 runs for the second wicket to put Scorchers in a much better position. Not only did they keep the scoreboard ticking by taking the singles and twos, the duo also managed to find the boundaries on a fairly regularly basis till Marsh was trapped in front by Jacques Kallis. — PTI |

Mumbai look to make amends against Yorkshire Cape Town, October 17 With both Mumbai and Yorkshire suffering defeats in their opening Group B matches, tomorrow’s tie is a must-win game for both the sides to keep their semi-final chances alive. There may be a striking similarity between the two teams as far loss and position in the points table are concerned, but MI would certainly start as favourites against the English outfit owing to their more experienced batting line-up, which runs quite deep. In fact, Mumbai batted reasonably well in their opening game against Highveld Lions. It was actually their bowling department that had let the team down with the likes of Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha leaking too many runs. A good start by Sachin Tendulkar along with either Dwayne Smith or Richard Levi is what Mumbai would be banking on. Tendulkar though got a start in the last match, scoring 16 off 24 balls, but he could not carry on the momentum. And come tomorrow he will be keen on doing well as his performance will have a bearing on the team’s fortune in the tournament. For the 39-year-old senior batsman, it will also be a chance to prove his detractors wrong after he was bowled thrice during the Test series against New Zealand at home and also in the previous match against Lions. — PTI |

It's always good to beat IPL teams: McKenzie
Cape Town, October 17 After getting the better of defending CLT20 champion Mumbai Indians in its first match, the South African outfit stunned Chennai Super Kings by six wickets at Newlands on Tuesday. "It's always good to beat the IPL sides or any side for that matter. All the teams that are here are the champions in their own countries. So, we knew every game's going to be a tough game. People have taken us in (after the two wins) and there's a lot of support for us," McKenzie said. The Lions' produced a thoroughly commendable performance on Tuesday as it chased down Chennai's 158 for six with three balls to spare and that too against a quality seam attack in Doug Bollinger, Ben Hilfenhaus and Albie Morkel. "It's always tough to come to Cape Town's coastal wicket and chase. But we bowled up front to make early inroads and then backed it up with our batting," McKenzie said. "The two Aussies in CSK (Bollinger and Hilfenhaus) bowled incredibly well against us up front, put us under pressure and we've seen in this tournament so far that losing early wickets in the first six overs is critical. But we managed to get over the line. All credit to the boys; they all came good," he added. McKenzie is also delighted to carry forward the winning momentum. — PTI |
Dinda takes East to Duleep Trophy final
Visakhapatnam, October 17 After East were bowled out for 215 in their second innings, South needed 239 runs in 51 overs (including mandatory overs) in order to win the match but in the end just about managed to avert outright defeat. They were 85 for 8 at the start of the mandatory overs when umpires decided to call off the match after consulting the two captains. They were in fact tottering at 42 for eight as Dinda had brilliant figures of 7/26 while Basant Mohanty took the other wicket. Dinda, who got his 13th five-for in first-class cricket terrorized the South Zone top-order in a single spell to shut out any dreams that were harboured by Robin Uthappa and Co. The pitch wasn't an easy one to bat on as left-hander Abhinav Mukund was done in by a delivery that kept low. In his next over, right-hander Ramaswamy Prasanna was castled while the dangerous Robin Uthappa edged one to Nataraj Behera in the slip cordon. Manish Pandey was also castled by Dinda and South at 16 for four were virtually out of the match. While Amit Verma, Stuart Binny and skipper R Vinay Kumar were also sent back cheaply by Dinda, Mohanty got rid off Abhimanyu Mithun. However with a nine-wicket match haul, he has certainly started his first-class season with a bang. Credit should also be given to Orissa duo of Biplab Samantray and Basant Mohanty who added 68 runs for the seventh wicket and more importantly helped the lead to swell and consumed crucial time which only lessened South's chances of an outright win. After his three-wicket haul in South's first innings, Samantray scored a patient 52 in the second essay while Mohanty chipped in with an useful 35 after half century in the 1st innings. Brief Scores: East Zone 267 & 215 (B Samantray 52, B Mohanty 35, R Vinay Kumar 3/10, S Binny 3/31); South Zone 244 & 85/8 (Ashok Dinda 7/26). East in final. — PTI |
Bhuvneshwar, Rituraj propel Central forward
Hyderabad, October 17 Central Zone scored 469 in reply to North's 451 riding on an astonishing 127-run 10th wicket partnership between Bhuvneshwar who hit a career-best 128 and Rituraj who chipped in with 39. The match as contest was over when Bhuvneshwar scored two runs off Ishant Sharma to give his team an all-important lead. It was after Rituraj had hit another Delhi speedster Parvinder Awana for two boundaries to level the scores. Bhuvneshwar hit 13 fours and three sixes in his innings. "It was one of the best innings of my first-class career. I am happy that I have been able to win it for my team," Bhuvneshwar said during an interaction after the match. The young UP all-rounder can be attributed for taking a bit of sheen off Yuvraj Singh's classic effort but on his own admission, he wasn't thinking about the star cricketer's innings. "Not really. You don't think about some other player's game when you go out there to bat. I was only thinking about how long I can bat. And if you talk about pressure, it was there today as
we needed only 10 runs. Yesterday, we batted freely," Bhuvneshwar replied. However, the hero of Central's victory didn't forget to mention that it was a flat track which made batting look very easy. "It was a very flat track to bat on," he stated. Revenge will be on Bhuvneshwar's mind when they meet East in Chennai from October 21. Brief scores: North Zone: 451 & 187/4 (R Dewan 80). Central Zone: 469 in 154.1 overs (Bhuvneshwar Kumar 128, Mahesh Rawat 71, Mohammed Kaif 64, Rituraj Singh 39 no, R Dhawan 3/66) & 39/1. Central in final. —

Lance strong no more
New York, October 17 Separately, one of his main corporate sponsors, Nike Inc, said it was ending its sponsorship of Armstrong. “To spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship,” Armstrong said in a statement. Armstrong is set to lose his record seven Tour de France titles after the US Anti-Doping Agency published a 1,000-page report last week that said the now-retired American took part in and organised an elaborate and sophisticated doping scheme on his way to his unrivalled success on the tour. Armstrong has always denied he took banned substances during his glittering career but refused to challenge the USADA charges against him. Armstrong founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation in 1997 after being diagnosed with testicular cancer in late 1996. Meanwhile, Nike, in reversing its earlier stand in support of Armstrong, said it could no longer ignore the evidence of his illicit behavior as a professional cyclist. “Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him,” the company said in a statement. “Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in any manner.” — Reuters The Endgame

Bhullar ready to spearhead home challenge at Indian Open
Bangalore, October 17 Bhullar, who won in Macau last week, is the man of the moment but he is not worried about being in the limelight as he leads the local charge at the Karnataka Golf Association course. "I feel the next generation of Indian golfers are ready to take over. The responsibility is on our shoulders (leading the Indian charge with Anirban Lahiri and Himmat Rai in the absence of Jeev Milkha Singh and Arjun Atwal) and we are ready for the challenge," said Bhullar, who has won four Asian Tour titles in his career. Lahiri, Rai and Shiv Kapur, all winners on the Asian Tour, will also feature in the event, alongside Peter Hanson of Sweden, ranked 25th in the world, Richie Ramsay of Scotland and defending champion David Gleeson of Australia. Bhullar, a Hero ambassador, is playing some of his best golf in recent months where he won two titles in a span of a month which subsequently swelled his career earnings on the Asian Tour to 1,001,045 US dollars. "I've been playing one of the best golf of my life in my career. It is a dream for every Indian player to play and win this tournament. I think I'm one of the few Indian golfers to wear the Hero logo this week as well. "My game is in a good shape and I've started to putt well. There were a few technical mistakes which I made in my posture but I've sorted that out. That could be one of the reasons for my two victories." said the 24-year-old. Gleeson uncharacteristically missed eight straight cuts from last year into the 2012 Asian Tour season but is showing glimpse of a comeback after finishing tied 17th at the Venetian Macau Open last week. — PTI |
France spring to life vs Spain
Madrid, October 17 Les Bleus lost 1-0 at home in a friendly against Japan last Friday following a shaky performance and few would have bet their defence would hold up against the world and European champions. Indeed, it seemed Didier Deschamps's team were heading to a defeat similar to their 2-0 Euro quarter-final loss against Spain when Sergio Ramos opened the scoring in the first half. France had a goal disallowed for offside and conceded a penalty. But when Hugo Lloris saved Cesc Fabregas's spot kick the visitors still had something to play for after the break. Deschamps, France's most decorated football player, found the words to inspire his team during the interval. “The coach's speech has a lot to do with our performance,” centre back Mamadou Sakho told reporters. “He told us not to let go, that we still could grab a draw and possibly win.” France upped the tempo and were rewarded in added time when Olivier Giroud headed home to snatch a well deserved point. Argentina beat Chile
Buenos Aires: Argentina's world class forwards were instrumental in a 2-1 away over Chile on Tuesday that gave the visitors a three-point lead in the standings as the South American World Cup qualifying campaign takes a break until March. Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain struck within minutes of each other half an hour into the match, taking their personal tallies to seven, with Chile pulling one back through substitute Felipe Gutierrez in added time at the end of the game. Argentina have 20 points from nine matches, three more than Ecuador, who drew 1-1 away at Venezuela, and four ahead of Colombia, who have a game in hand. They rode their luck in the opening half hour when Chile created several chances, then showed superior finishing. — Reuters Other Main Results

Kolkata ODI vs Pak likely on Jan 3
New Delhi, October 17 "The decision is more or less unanimous that the India versus Pakistan match will be held at the Eden Gardens on January 3. After discussions with board as well as with police we found January 3 as an appropriate date. It's New Year time and ideal weather for ODI cricket," a senior Cricket Association of Bengal official told PTI today. On the day, a three-member team from England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) along with BCCI's Chief Operations Officer Suru Nayak came on a security recee of the stadium for the Test match between India and England slated to be held from December 5-9. The three-member team included Chief of Operations John Carr, security expert Reg Dickason and press officer Ian Smith who inspected the stadium and also had a meeting with senior police officers regarding the security arrangements. "The England officials were very satisfied after doing a recee of the entire stadium. Since they had already played an ODI and a T20 last year after renovations were complete, they had a fair idea about the conditions," the official informed. — PTI |

IOA to induct 3 new members
New Delhi, October 17 With the International Olympic Committee (IOC) insisting that the IOA voting members should consist of only representatives of Olympic sports , the IOA has been compelled to induct new members, so that Olympic sports get a majority of nine voting members (presently the majority is only six). Earlier, the Winter Sports Federation had only one vote, but now with different disciplines in winter sports seeking affiliation to the IOA, the Executive Board will consider giving admission to three of the six sports bodies who have sought the IOA membership, including ice skating, skiing and luge. Golf has also sought IOA affiliation, though it’s not an Olympic sport. The IOA has many voting members who do not represent Olympic disciplines, like kabaddi, kho-kho etc, but they are old members and the apex body cannot remove them without amending the constitution. “We cannot remove them. The only way out is to give majority to Olympic sports by inducting new members as the IOC rule clearly stipulates that Olympic sports should have the majority,” a top source told The Tribune. The IOA had made amendments in the voting rights of the members during the National Games held at Ranchi in February last year. The amendment reduced the votes of the State Olympic Associations to half, but due to strong protests from the States and the National Sports Federations, the IOA constitution was amended further, restoring two votes to the States Olympic Association, which was ratified by the IOC as well. The second item on the agenda is the appointment of a judge as the returning officer for the elections. With IOA president Suresh Kalmadi, who has completed three terms, announcing his decision not to contest for any IOA post, and acting president Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra also standing down due to the age factor, the fight for the post of president is likely to be between incumbent secretary-general Randhir Singh and former Haryana Olympic Association president Abhay Singh Chautala, though neither of them has announced his candidature. |
