KKR fade in night of Devils Centurion, October 13 Sent into bat, Daredevils posted a competitive 160 for 8 and then restricted KKR to 108 for 7 on a Centurion pitch which assisted pace bowling though it had uneven bounce at times. Pacers Umesh Yadav (2 for 13), Irfan Pathan (2 for 20), Morne Morkel (2 for 25) and Ajit Agarkar (1 for 21) shared the seven wickets among them to inflict a crushing defeat on KKR in the Group A match. KKR, the reigning IPL champions, made a mess of their run chase with three wickets falling in seven balls. To make matters worse for them, Jacques Kallis retired hurt without scoring in the 10th ball after being hit on his fingers by a Morne Morkel rising delivery. Kallis' fingers were seen bleeding on the impact of the delivery and he had to leave the field in pain when his side's score was just four. Manoj Tiwary top-scored with a 38-ball 33 which included two fours and a six while Rajat Bhatia was the second highest scorer with 26. Pathan, who opened bowling, rocked the KKR innings with his inswinging deliveries as he took two wickets in the first over itself. KKR captain Gautam Gambhir continued his poor form as he was the first one to go for a golden duck in the third ball of the innings. He holed out to Pietersen at mid-on failing to negotiate an inswinging delivery. Three balls later, Pathan had Bisla (1) for his second wicket. Bisla missed another inswinging delivery and was plumbed in front of wicket. KKR were reeling at 3 for 2 wickets and matters became worse with Brendon McCullum departing in the first ball of Morkel with Chand holding a catch at point. Earlier, young Unmukt Chand and Ross Taylor played fine cameos. Most of the big guns of the Daredevils could not come up with a big score with only Chand (40) and Taylor (36) contributing substantially after being sent into bat at a Centurion pitch which had something both for pacers and spinners. Except for the 64-run stand for the fourth wicket in 64 balls between Chand and Taylor, there was no substantial partnership for the Daredevils. Their score would have been much smaller had not L Balaji yielded 30 runs in the 17th over. Chand, who was timing the ball superbly throughout his innings, four fours and two sixes from the 27 balls he faced. Taylor struck one four and two sixes in his 24-ball innings. Off-spinner Sunil Narine was the pick of the KKR bowlers as he grabbed three wickets for 21. Balaji was expensive as he conceded 61 runs for two wickets while Brett Lee and Jacques Kallis chipped in with one wicket each. Daredevils did began well with Virender Sehwag (22) and captain Mahela Jayawardene (21) putting on 36 runs in 5.1 overs but later on lost wickets in regular intervals before regaining ground towards the close to post a decent score.

CLT20 Hits 59-ball 83 to hand convincing win to South African side
Centurion, October 13 Sent into bat, Titans posted a challenging 163 for four, and then rode on Cornelius de Villiers’ three wickets to restrict Perth Scorchers to 124 for seven at the SuperSport Park. It was left-handed Rudolph’s 109-run partnership for the first wicket with Henry Davids (54) that set the tone for Titan’s challenging total and in the end proved to be sufficient for the South African side. Rudolph, who has represented the South Africa national team in 46 Tests and 45 One—day Internationals, was in top form and found the boundaries at will against Perth bowlers.
Not far behind was Davids, who matched Rudolph shot for shot. While Rudolph smashed nine fours and three sixes during his belligerent knock, Davids hit four fours and as many sixes while facing a mere 38 balls. The century partnership between the two openers took just 12.2 overs as Schorcehers struggled to take wickets. By the time the first wicket fell, the damage was already done. A 51—run stand for the second wicket between Rudolph and 38—year—old Martin van Jaarsveld (19), who has also played for South Africa for a brief while, added to Scorchers’ misery as the two batters collected the runs in just 39 balls. Pacer Nathan Rimmington was the best Scorchers bowler, returning impressive figures of two for 20, while there was a wicket apiece for Michael Beer and Joe Mennie on a pitch that had a tinge of grass on it.

‘CLT20 not good for Oz Test preparation’
Melbourne, October 13 Star players such as Shane Watson, David Warner, Mike Hussey, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Brad Haddin will be competing in the CLT20 for their respective teams. Due to this, they would play just one Sheffield Shield match before the first Test against the Proteas starting on November 9 and Inverarity is not particularly pleased with the situation. “It is anything but an ideal preparation,” Inverarity said. “You just have to do your best but having the Champions League where it is now is not in the best interests of good preparation for the first Test." Inverarity said pacer Cummins would be used sparingly during the series. “For some time you will not see him play three Tests in a row,” Inverarity said.

Wadekar slams ‘sick’ players who opt for T20 cricket
Mumbai, October 13 “There’s a tendency for some players to fall sick and make themselves not available for Test cricket, but they suddenly become fit for (lucrative) Twenty20 (matches),” Wadekar said without naming anyone. The former cricketer was expressing his views at the panel discussion titled “Cricket across all formats” arranged by Legends Club on the occasion of former India opener, late Vijay Merchant’s, 101st birth anniversary here last night. “Challenges are many in Twenty20. In Twenty20 things happen in a rush. You rush to score runs and take wickets. The shorter and faster the game, maybe, one has become more accurate (in bowling by conceding less number of wides and bowling fewer no balls),” he said. Thanking Merchant, the then selection panel chairman who elevated him to India captaincy for the tour of the West Indies in 1971 with his casting vote. — PTI |
Rains will have a say in playing XI
by Sunil Gavaskar Unlike many other sports the game of cricket can change because of the weather. If there is a possibility of rain then teams will choose their playing eleven keeping the rain factor in mind. They will have some bowlers, who can bowl with a wet ball and not include those who need to grip the ball firmly to bowl well. The batting also can be changed and those who can start blasting from ball one will be sent ahead of those who like to settle down a bit before playing their shots. The skippers also think about whether to bat first or field on winning the toss and so a lot of thought goes in when there is threat of rain. The weather in Johannesburg has turned around completely since last week. The locals tell that last week the temperatures were hovering in the mid thirties, but now the temperatures are in the teens and that is something that hampers the sub-continent and West Indian cricketers, who are used to playing with the sun on their backs. What the teams also do not want is for their games to be washed off for that means they have to win the remaining games to qualify for the knockouts. There are obviously some teams that are a little weaker than the others in terms of experience, but the ultra short format of the game is such that any team can win on the day. The Chennai Super Kings begin their campaign with a game against the Sydney franchise. They did not quite fire in the last IPL even though they got through to the finals, but even they will agree it was not with the ease with which they had played in the earlier IPL tournaments. The Mumbai Indians are the defending champions and they will be looking to defend their title since they keep stumbling in the knockouts of the IPL. Their batting is their strength and if they can raise the level of their fielding then they will be a threat to reckon with. They play the local team so they will have to contend with the crowd too and the pitch will definitely have more in it for the quicker bowlers of the Highveld Lions. This is where Mumbai’s strong batting line up need to show what they are made of. In Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard they have some of the most explosive batsmen in the game, but it is the extra bounce that they will have to contend with. The same will apply for the Chennai’s boys. Playing on the Indian pitches batsmen can waltz down the pitch to the fastest of bowlers without worrying about the ball coming at their faces, but not here in South Africa. The teams that overcome that challenge could well decide which teams get through to the knockout stage. — PMG |
Setback for Deccan Chargers: Bombay HC stays arbitrator's status quo order
Mumbai, October 13 The stay was granted by Justice R D Dhanuka on an appeal filed by BCCI under section 37 of Arbitration and Conciliation Act. The arbitrator appointed by the Bombay High Court, retired Supreme Court Judge, C K Thakkar, in his first meeting yesterday, passed an order granting status quo till October 17 on the decision of BCCI to terminate the franchise. Being aggrieved, the Cricket Board moved the High Court today and secured a stay. The court will hear the matter again on October 17. Cash-strapped DCHL had yesterday failed to give a Bank Guarantee of Rs 100 crore to BCCI, a condition set by the High Court for continuance of the beleaguered franchise in the league. The DCHL had sought time till October 15 to file a bank guarantee but the High Court refused to extend the deadline. The court had on October 1 asked DCHL to give the bank guarantee which would be in force for a period of one year. The judge had also observed that BCCI had at all stages acted in haste in terminating the franchise agreement with DCHL and not granted it time to cure the defects. Being aggrieved, BCCI had filed an appeal against the October 1 order of the High Court which is likely to come up for hearing before a division bench headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah on October 15. BCCI had on September 15 taken the decision to terminate the contract at an emergency IPL Governing Council meeting in Chennai which was challenged by DCHL in the Bombay High Court. The court had on October 1 ordered DCHL to bear all expenses for IPL 6 including making payments to BCCI towards franchise, players and support team costs. Besides, it was asked to bear the costs of conducting matches and other expenses. In the event of any default on part of DCHL, BCCI shall be entitled to invoke the bank guarantee to the extent necessary, Justice Kathawala had ruled. The court had on September 26 appointed retired Supreme Court judge C K Thakkar as arbitrator to resolve within three months the dispute between BCCI and DCHL over the termination of Deccan Chargers franchise. However, pending arbitration proceedings and making up of an award by the arbitrator, the judge had asked the BCCI not to act on the termination of the franchise agreement for a period of seven days, if the award is in their favour. The judge had, however, clarified that the September 26 order would immediately cease to be in force if DCHL fails to furnish the bank guarantee. That deadline ended last evening at 5 pm and apparently meant the end of the road for Deccan Chargers. However, court-appointed arbitrator Justice (retd) Thakkar, meanwhile, ordered maintaining status quo. The arbitrator's order was today stayed by Justice Dhanuka.

Sixers pose big threat to Dhoni’s men
Johannesburg, October 13 Sixers have quite an ace up their sleeve in all-rounder Shane Watson, the man who was destructive with the bat and incisive with the ball in the World T20. Such was the 31-year-old all-rounder's form, that he netted four Man of the Match trophies before walking away with the Player of the Tournament award even though Australia crashed out in the semifinals. In the form of his life, if Watson manages to keep fatigue at bay, he could well turn out to be the most valuable player in the event.
Led by Brad Haddin, the Big Bash champions are a decent line-up even though Watson would be their most crucial player with the bat. The skipper, who is struggling to get back into the national fold after an injury layoff, would also be a key player for the side. On the bowling front, they have the express pace of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who would relish the conditions here. Cummins was in good form during the World T20 and would be looking forward to working his magic in a country where he made a Test debut last year. Chennai, on the other hand, have a few issues to deal with. Skipper Dhoni will come into the tournament as a man under scrutiny after being an uninspiring leader during India's doomed World T20 campaign. The batting line-up of the IPL runner-ups features some reliable names such Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina and Dhoni himself but the team lacks the one aggressor who can intimidate the rival attack. Squads: (Chennai Super Kings): MS Dhoni (c), R Ashwin, Michael Hussey, Doug Bollinger, M Vijay, Faf du Plessis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nuwan Kulasekara, Albie Morkel, Suresh Raina, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravindra Jadeja, Shadab Jakati, Yo Mahesh, S Badrinath; Sydney Sixers: Brad Haddin (c), Patrick Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Michael Lumb, Nic Maddinson, Nathan McCullum, Ian Moran, Peter Nevill, Stephen O'Keefe, Ben Rohrer, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Dom Thornely, Shane Watson. — Agencies |
Yuvraj is North’s star in semifinals
Hyderabad, October 13 The match is of greater significance as the four-day contest will provide some indications as to how Yuvraj's body responds to the rigours of days' cricket. While Yuvraj has now started playing Twenty20 internationals, it is the longer version which will test his stamina as he starts another battle — to try and cement his place in the Indian Test side. On personal front, Yuvraj seems to be enjoying his stay in Hyderabad as he was found tweeting about city's famous Paradise restaurant's Biryani. "Paradise ki biryani ka swad hi kuch alagh hai! Love the city hyderabad!!" he wrote on his twitter account. It will be interesting as to how his body responds in case Central Zone bats for atleast 120 overs. However Yuvraj would hope that pacers Ishant Sharma and Parvinder Awana will ensure that Central Zone batsmen can't make merry at the Uppal Stadium on Sunday. Apart from Yuvraj whose every move will be keenly followed, skipper Shikhar Dhawan will be another batsman to watch out for. Dhawan who had scored already century and half century in the quarterfinal against West Zone would like to get another big one against the likes of Praveen Kumar, Rituraj Singh, Piyush Chawla and co. Central's batting is dependant on India aspirant Robin Bist and India discard Mohammed Kaif but for the next four days, it will be Yuvraj who is all set to shine. South Zone favourites
A formidable South Zone team will start as clear favourites against defending champions East Zone in the semi-final of the Duleep Trophy starting from tomorrow at the VDCA ground. The 22-yard-strip at the Visakhapatnam Stadium has always assisted the batsmen and it won't be any different this time round. South Zone with likes of domestic heavyweights in skipper Abhinav
Mukund, swashbuckling opener Robin Uthappa and the enormously talented Manish Pandey will like to indulge in a run-feast against a weak East Zone bowling attack which depends a lot of last season's top wicket-taker Ashok
Dinda. With Shami Ahmed not unavailable due to side strain, Dinda will have Orissa seamer Basant Mohanty and all-rounder Biplab Samantray for support. South's bowling attack will have Vinay Kumar supported by A Mithun and KP
Appanna. — PTI |

Murray beats Federer, faces Djokovic
Shanghai, October 13 Federer, who conceded a crucial break of serve in the first set after serving three double-faults, was given a reprieve by a rain delay when Murray reached 5-4 in the second set but he could not fend off the inevitable on the resumption. Murray will be looking for a third consecutive victory over Djokovic after beating the Serbian world number two in the Olympic semifinal and then in their Flushing Meadows showdown. Djokovic was equally impressive against hard-hitting Czech Berdych. He roared into a 5-1 lead in the first set before Berdych made a match of it. He was again dominant in the second set, capitalising on an early break to lead 4-2 before eventually serving out for his first Shanghai final. “It’s a big challenge when you play a top 10 player,” said Djokovic. It’s Paes vs Bhupathi in doubles final The Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna set up a summit clash with Leander Paes and his Czech partner Radek Stepanek after both the pairs won their respective semifinals. The seventh seeded Indian combo reached its second ATP World Tour Masters final of the season after beating British pair of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-8 in an hour and 36 minutes. While the fourth seeded Indo-Czech duo outplayed Marin Cilic of Croatia and Brazil’s Marcelo Melo 6-0, 6-2 in just 57 minutes. In a hard-fought battle, Bhupathi and Bopanna came from a set down to make it to the final. The Indian pair could convert only one out of the six breakpoints opportunities to win the match and set up an intriguing final.

Ban spot-fixers for life, says Muralitharan
Singapore, October 13 The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed the suspension on Wednesday ahead of investigations and Muralitharan, the leading wicket taker both in test and one-day internationals, said anyone found guilty deserved the severest punishment. “Definitely, people that do these things should be punished for life. They, at any level, should not be tolerated," the 40-year-old told Reuters in an interview in Singapore on Saturday. “I think the ICC are doing the right thing...if they are found guilty, they will definitely be punished." Muralitharan backed the ICC and said it was good that people were being caught and not allowed to get away with damaging the sport. “I think they (the ICC) are doing the right things but there are always bad eggs in everything," the off-spinner known more commonly as 'Murali' said. “In society there are good people and bad people and it has always been like that, but fortunately they get caught so that means cricket is getting cleaner and cleaner. “I think ICC are doing a lot of education (programmes for players). Cricket boards, match referees, management (are also) educating, so there is enough education." — Reuters |

Prerna, Jeevan win
New Delhi, October 13 Both received cash prizes of Rs 1.5 lakh each from chief guest Sania Mirza. Prerna fought back from the brink to upstage her doubles partner and Delhi colleague Rishika. But the tall Rishika should blame herself for missing out on the national title, as she faulted big time, not once, but twice to let Prerna walk away with the top honours. Rishika was in control when she won the first set, and led 5-2 in the second. Serving for the match, Rishika suddenly lost her nerve and was broken for the first time. Prerna roared back to take the set and forged ahead 4-1 in the third when Rushika quit. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan effectively stone-walled the all-round game of Arjuna Khade to triumph in straight sets, though the first had gone to the wire. Jeevan’s effective forehand fetched him many vital points, and he rode on that strength to beat Khade in the first set. Jeevan then simply raced through the second set. Rishab Aggarwal beat Karan Salwan 6-1, 6-2 to bag the boys’ under-18 singles title while Pranjala Yadlapalli beat Tarannum Handa 6-7 (8), 6-0, 7-5 for the girls’ title. Interestingly, the prize money for the women’s singles winner and runner-up was enhanced due to Sania Mirza’s intervention. |
Kalmadi not to contest IOA election, hints at retirement
New Delhi, October 13 In a significant development, Kalmadi said that he will make way for a new generation of sports leaders after having served as IOA president for the last 16 years. "I have served Indian sports, for the last four terms as President of the IOA, to the best of my abilities and have now decided to make way for a new generation of sports leaders,” Kalmadi said. “I would now like to focus on my constituency, Pune, and on my family. I am thankful to all the Sports federations and Sports professionals for their support and confidence in my leadership. I’m sure Indian sports will achieve new heights and will soon emerge as a sports powerhouse,” he added.
