Long live the jatt
The Punjabi film industry rocks today and so do the comedies. Cashing-in on the trend is yet another movie — Jatt Airways. The story of two real brothers (played by Alfaaz and Padam) set to marry two real sisters (played by Tulip Joshi and Smriti Khanna); with fathers chasing their wards and the villain creating chaos, it is set to be a madcap romcom!
On Saturday, the director and actors of the film shared some notes with us… Never say never A science student, a national athlete, a business woman, Tulip Joshi turned actor by chance. “Mine is a very chaotic journey. I don’t know what I am doing next. I am wary of saying ‘no’ to anything because I certainly end up doing it then,” says the petite actor. Having done around 20 films in her decade-long journey in the film industry, Tulip is content doing one or two films every year. She eventually dreams of creating something in cinema that has the power to touch many lives. “I have not gone asking for work but I am getting what I want,” says Tulip, who has done films in Hindi and many regional languages. As long as the role excites her and she has confidence in the director, Tulip is game. “I would do any film Hindi, Punjabi, Arabic or even Chinese movie. It’s the director’s vision that matters most for me,” says the actor, who is currently working in Kannada film Bachchan with Sudeep. Having done Punjabi films like Yaara o Dildaara and Jag Jeondeyan De Mele already, she is enthused about Jatt Airways. “I want to give my best shot to whatever I do,” says Tulip who finds inspiration in Sridevi. “I am not the one who will work for 10 years, get married and leave the industry; I will work till I die,” says Tulip. Another singer turns actor Becoming a hero was this popular singer’s childhood dream, which comes true with Jatt Airways. “Acting in videos is a cakewalk as compared to movies,” admits Alfaaz, but he is hoping that his audience gives his film as much support as they have given to his songs like Yaar Bathere. “The movie rocks and will do so across the globe,” he says, justifying his film’s title. This Pappu can dance! Padam, actor from Hisar who became a known face with Pappu Can't Dance Sala from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, looks a different person all together. “I was chubby then,” reveals this actor, who was also seen in Pyar ka Panchnama. Why Jatt Airways? “When even established houses like Yash Raj and Balaji are thinking of making a Punjabi film, it only makes sense to take up this chance,” says Padam, who has spent a year-and-a-half in Chandigarh studying. He plays the younger of the two brothers, the naughtier one. He romances Smriti Khanna on screen, a Delhi-based model who also debuts with this film. mona@tribunemail.com

Music by Honey Singh is going to be the USP of this film, according to the director Harjit Singh Ricky. Why Jatt Airways as title? “The phrase is catchy. It captures on-the-run youngsters, parents on their chase and the accompanying chaos,” he says. And, yes, no aircrafts as yet! “That would have shot up the budget,” he says. This one also comes with an item number just like his previous film Sirphire. “Shooting starts this Sunday and the plans are to release the film around Valentine’s Day next year,” he adds.

Back on campus
The trend of only family dramas and love stories dominating Indian television defies a very strong logic. Back in 1993, Banegi Apni Baat hit the TV screens and became an instant hit among youngsters. Its successful run lasted for five years without any sob story or skirmishes between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. It had love stories; all very real, nobody died for anybody in love. The show didn’t stick to the twin-formula required to succeed — family drama and love story—yet became highly popular. A few campus shows are dotting the small screen once again, but it is too early to judge if they can really succeed.
Manav Gohil picked up The Buddy Project to end his five-year sabbatical from television and is happy to have made a comeback with a different role. “I took a break because I couldn’t see anything substantial coming my way. They were the same kind of roles; same plots, same issues…the subjects were getting regressive.” The Buddy Project, he feels, can be the game-changer. “It might once again inspire the channels in competition to come up with stories that cater to youngsters.” He doesn’t deny that there is a love story in the show but, “the romantic scenes don’t drag till a few episodes with Bollywood songs playing in the background.” Dil Dosti Dance, again a show based on youth and their aspirations, has been on air for a year-and-a-half now and is doing well. In fact, the show triggered this trend of campus shows on Channel V. Surveen Guggal— Topper Of The Year is in the same league, starring Smriti Kalra, who began her career with 12/24 Karol Bagh, in the title role. “For Karol Bagh, I put on a lot of weight to look like a 30-year-old. In Surveen Guggal… I am playing my age, it helps me relate better with my character,” says Smriti. From a family drama to a campus show, she is glad to have made the switch. As against expected, the audience of the shows is not just college and school students, but also grown-ups. Smriti adds, “Youngsters watch the show because they instantly relate to the characters and the issues that are taken up; adults because they have experienced it all.” Students’ problems that are addressed in the show are very genuine; they aren’t made up or blown out of proportion. Abigail Jain of Humse Hai Life shares the details, “The issues go beyond the relationship problems in these shows. Ragging, admissions, sycophancy, fighting, student politics, of course academics and sports; the shows have a lot of material.” Yet, it is too early to conclude if the show will change the dynamics of television. Mita Vashisht, who made a comeback after five years on TV with Surveen Guggal, has already quit the plum role of the principal of the college. “I saw the show veering off to the usual direction of senseless romance. A student show that could have incorporated so many youth-oriented issues in the script is again focusing on love stories.” She adds that the show, which began on a very positive note, is repeating what family dramas usually do. Hope the campus shows don’t buckle under the pressure of showing what’s considered safe—silly fights and sillier arguments. Future
tense If a show could beat the biggest hit of sitcom, Two-and-a-Half Men, it has to have the right punches. The Big Bang theory, a campus and comic show, managed to do that. Why can’t the Indian television industry repeat the same? ashima@tribunemail.com

A recipe for
success
He probably knows a lot about luv shuv, but when it comes to chicken, the sinfully sexy looking Kunal Kapoor cannot cook to save his life! Moving around in Punjab for the promotion of his upcoming movie Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, the actor from Amritsar doesn’t need to be told about the dil khol key eating habits of Punjabis. “Tell me about it,” he laughs Punjabi style, “the minute I am done with breakfast, I start thinking about what I will have for lunch and dinner is on the mind the moment lunch is over.”
Thanks to this awareness, it was probably easy to play the Khurana in the movie. “I have been associated with the movie from day one — from the story to the making. Sameer Sharma wrote the script and we were looking for a producer. We approached Anurag Kashyap and this is how the movie came about,” adds Kunal. Luv Shuv…stars Huma Qureshi and Rajesh Sharma. It is a story about a quirky Punjabi family in pursuit of a secret recipe that will help them reclaim their pride and wealth. “Punjabis in most of the movies are shown as loud characters; Luv Shuv will break the stereotype with a totally different treatment. Along with the team, I believe that humour doesn’t come from stupid jokes or puns; Luv Shuv…will change the way Punjabis are perceived on screen,” says the hunk of Bollywood who is known for his intense roles.
He adds, “I am Bollywood’s official poet and terrorist. Whenever there is a role of a terrorist or poet, people approach me. I guess I look intense and intelligent in long hair and beard. Honestly, I am none.” This is one modest statement from the actor who is known to pick up intense characters! “I think after Luv Shuv I will be getting comedy roles as well. Other than this, I will also try for roles that have a lighter streak in them,” he says. It is the passing mention of being a commercial pilot license that brings gusto in his voice. “Flying is a passion, but I haven’t had the time to study so that I can give my exams and procure a license. I will do that whenever I get time.” The movie has been shot in Punjab, mostly near Ludhiana. “I believe that the real effect comes on the real locations.” jasmine@tribunemail.com

The makers of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana seem to have found a rather unique way to promote their film. The actors Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi along with film-maker Anurag Kashyap will be visiting families in Punjab and not only will they stay with them, but also have them prepare the Punjabi delicacy Chicken Khurana during their stay! The actors will get the real feel of Punjabi culture that way. Meanwhile, the makers have roped in rapper Honey Singh to perform a special number for the film and the singer might also shoot a special video for them; he will be lending his voice to a track titled Kikli.

All that bling
It’s influx of retail, riding high on the wedding season. Just when we thought it was full stops for this session, yet another lifestyle exhibition, Zaira Fashion Affair 2012, comes calling.
Once inside, there’s a deluge of fabrics and splash of colours, besides the screaming fuchsia and gold happening everywhere. One has to stop by and figure out the differences among the similarities. Neha Singla, event organiser, shares, “We have been exhibiting in the city for over three years now. We try to improve each time by bringing in designers and labels from far off cities.” There’s Anhad, a Delhi-based designer studio, showcasing dress material, Indian wear in myriad fabrics and with various detailing. From among as many as sixty five stalls, about four city-based labels make their presence felt, while majority come from Delhi and Mumbai and two labels come from Dubai and Pakistan. Speaking of which, there’s Sanam Tamanna Dubai, with its cottons sitting as pretty as its silks and with prints which could have easily been from any part of this region. Shares the exhibitor, “We have been showcasing in Chandigarh for quite some time now and we always received a good response. People here like to try out everything and we have a pretty good clientele.” Jewellery items get equal importance. A spread of cocktail rings, stand-alone pieces of costume jewellery break the monotony of anarkalis found almost at every corner and all through the corridors. In a far off corner stands an auto show, an easy to ride, battery operated two wheel vehicle Ezipp. Talk of three sixty degree solutions. Shares Rajeev Chandgothia, “It’s part of the exhibition and I think it gels completely with the lifestyle exhibition for women. This vehicle is easy to drive, battery operated, eco-friendly. (On till September 30 at Park Plaza—17)

A musical team
Very rarely does a talent run in the entire family, but in the case of singers Mapuia Poonte, Caryn Poonte (19) and Joan Poonte (16), the same holds true. Mapuia, the father of these young girls, belongs to Mizoram and was identified by Naresh Jacob of Vibrations band. The latter also promoted Poorvi Koutish, the young voice of Chandigarh, who participated in Indian Idol Season 6 and did very well.
Chandigarh has a lot of talent and for Naresh’s band, which began in 1984, looking out for budding singers was always important. Did he ever try for Bollywood? “I don’t want to leave Chandigarh at all and I love performing live, as it is altogether a different feeling,” says Naresh. As for Mapuia, “At present I’m a music teacher with St Xavier’s School, Chandigarh. Back in Mizoram, I used to listen to a lot of radio and also sing along. I usually sing Pop and Rock. Also, I know how to play the piano. I feel music has no language and no boundaries, so I would definitely try my hands on some Bollywood songs.” For Caryn and Joan, singing is just a hobby and their studies are going side-by-side. Says Caryn, “We both sing whenever we have free time because singing needs a lot of practice. I love singing R&B and Pop, and I’m inspired by Lady Gaga.” Joan who is currently in tenth standard is a huge fan of Justin Beiber. “As we are a part of Vibrations band now, we will have to balance our studies and music fun.” Now that’s what we call a club of happy people!

An outdoor experience
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra
This is the season of pleasant evenings and good food. And to make things more appetising Hotel Hometel Chandigarh re-launches its open-air barbeque restaurant Terrace Grill. While it’s the cool breeze and whiff from the live kitchen that makes this experience worthwhile, the ambience, music and miniature lanterns placed on the tables add to the experience. Most of the food-stuff is grilled and that is what makes it more enticing. With a fixed menu and rate, the items that are served here include salads, kebabs, dal, biryani and sweet dish. First come the salads and there is a fruit salad with orange dressing, fried aloo tikki chat, fried fish salad and char-grill pineapple salad along with raw papaya and green chutney. And we must compliment the chef for the char-grill pineapple salad as it just leaves the perfect smoky flavour in the mouth with some sweetness from pineapple. Since the food is grilled, so what better than kebabs and that’s what is served next. So, we have smoke fish, pattrani machi, jerk chicken (an Iranian kebab), partegazi chicken, do ranga seekh kebab and dum ki galouti kebab with ulta parantha for the meat eaters. For vegetarians we recommend sweet-n-spicy grilled fruit skewers, cajun potato and hara kebab awadhi (it simply melts in your mouth). They come mint chutney. While salads and kebabs make for a complete meal, but biryani and Rambabu ka parantha sound interesting for the main course. And we bet you would enjoy the parantha as much as galouti kebab as it is has an amazing texture and filling in it. Though Rambabu ka parantha is an Agra specialty, the chef of the restaurant has undergone training in Agra and he has surely replicated it in a more refined way. For a sweet ending, there is sizzling chocolate brownie with ice-cream, angoori galub jamun and lachha rabri.
Price tag Menu: It is a fixed menu with salads, kebabs, main course dishes and sweet dishes. Price: Rs 495 plus taxes for vegetarian meal and Rs 595 plus taxes for a non-vegetarian meal. Restaurant timing: 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm Food served: Indian. Mainly kebabs |

Family comes first for Sonali
Actress Sonali Bendre, who is making a comeback on silver screen with Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2, says she prioritises her personal life over her professional career. "I definitely don't want to do roles that I have played earlier. I would like to play my age which I am doing. Also, I have too many conditions so unless it falls into my priorities I don't do it (films). Either my son should have holidays when I am shooting or the shoot has to be in Mumbai," said Sonali. "If the role fits into these parameters then I will do it, it's important than the role," she said. The model-actress married director Goldie Behl in 2002 and gave birth to her son Ranveer in 2005. The 37-year-old was last seen in a Shah Rukh Khan starrer super hit movie Kal Ho Na Ho (2003). At a time when actors like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are still going strong in the film industry, the scenario of older or married actress is different in Bollywood compared to Hollywood. On which, Sonali says, "May be that is the social difference there (Hollywood) it's a different kind of society we are moving towards. There are more and more interesting roles and different kind of films and roles are being written." "May be the progress is not happening fast but its happening. Ten years ago would have anyone imagined a film like English Vinglish but it is now being made. So changes are happening," she said. — PTI
‘If Kareena is the Heroine, I’m the Hero’
Arjun Rampal is today in a very confident space. Gone are the days when Aishwarya Rai lorded over her home production Dil Ka Rishta while Arjun had to play the sleeping partner.
He ensured himself a proper place in the publicity campaign of Heroine. In Madhur Bhandarkar’s much talked-about Heroine he was main male lead. And certainly not in the walkover sense of, say, Sameer Dharamadhikari in Bhandarkar’s Satta or Arjan Bajwa in Fashion. In Bhandarkar’s heroine-oriented films the male actors tend to be shadowy, mere supplements to the main attraction, namely the heroine. There’s no doubt that in Heroine too Kareena Kapoor took the centre-stage. But Arjun was not insecure about his space in the film. This isn’t the first heroine-oriented film he has done with Kareena. In Siddharth Malhotra’s We Are Family, Arjun held his own despite Kajol and Kareena playing the two central characters. “And no one said I was a second fiddle to them in We Are Family.” Arjun points out confidently, adding that if there was so much of Kareena in the first posters and trailer of Heroine then it was by design. “The film was called Heroine and it is the story of Kareena’s character’s journey in the film industry. I am the man in her life. I’m there from the beginning till end. Other men come and go. I am the constant in Kareena’s character’s life.” We understand from sources that Arjun has stipulated in his contract that he’d be given a certain space in the promotions of Heroine. And rightly so, Arjun has a standing in the Bollywood hierarchy. “I am picking roles that challenge me. Staying central to the plot is not my goal. In my next release Inkaar I worked with Sudhir Mishra for the first time. In my release after that Charavyuha I’m back working again with Prakash Jha after Raajneeti. In fact, I am also in Prakash’s next film Satsang which starts in December. This is a very busy year for me,” says the busy actor.
Jha in Chakravyuh
Prakash Jha is directing Arjun Rampal and others in Chakravyuh. He is also acting the role of a businessman in it. He had a guest appearance in Raajneeti and a fleeting appearance in Aarakshan as well.
Changing tunes
Shreya Ghoshal sings melodious love songs and even naughty ones. For the first time, she has sung a hard rock composed by Abhishek Ray for an independent film. She is excited about using her vocals in a new way.
Farah miffed with Sonakshi?
According to a report published in a daily, actress Sonakshi Sinha’s friendship has soured with Farah Khan and Shirsh Kunder as she didn’t promote their film Joker. But Sonakshi denied the reports and tweeted: “Woke up to yet another fictional story today... The fate of a film at the box office does not change the relationship between the ppl involved. Things are fine between Farah and me. So idle minds can give it a rest.” Rumour has it that Sonakshi was considered for the female lead in Farah Khan’s Happy New Year, opposite Shah Rukh Khan. A few days ago, an unconfirmed report also suggested that SRK wanted Parineeti to star opposite him rather than her. We wonder what Sonakshi has to say about it?

Bigg Boss? Not again!
It was her big ticket to Bollywood, but Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone says she would never go back to the Bigg Boss house. Leone forayed into Bollywood with Jism 2, which was offered to her by Mahesh Bhatt while she was in the Big Boss house. Nonetheless, the adult star says that the show has opened a new world for her and she is enjoying every bit of it. Sunny’s next film is Ragini MMS 2.
Candidly honest
The svelte and petite actress of Kuch Toh Log fame Kritika Kamra's is playing her role to perfection on the show. She is a natural actress. She chose to do a role that was unconventional from what her contemporaries have been playing on television. This was a big and a bold step for Kritika. She says, “I was a below average actor when I started. Now, I am an average actor.” You can’t help loving her honesty!
Happy ending
Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha on Colors is all set to have a happy and grand ending. Currently, the story is revolving around Megha being in the hospital after the accident and Mohan trying his best to get her back on her feet. Amidst all this, Mohan’s father will create a hue and cry about Megha trapping his son. But, Mohan will stand by her and try explaining his love for Megha to his father. After a lot of persuasion his father’s heart will melt and he will accept the duo. Moreover, Nanhi and Mohan will arrange for a Ganpathi pooja for Megha’s well-being. In a dramatic sequence, an object will be about to fall on Mohan and at that very moment, Megha will get back to her feet and save him. Thus, at the end everyone will come together as one big happy family. The show is also said to be returning after a gap of at least 6 months with season two.

There were reports in media about how the actor was interested in being a part of Bigg Boss only if adult film actress and Jism 2 star, Sunny Leone was a part of it. However, he rejected it.
