MC bylaws bite pet lovers

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is giving jitters to pet lovers in the city who own more than two dogs. Ignorant of the cut-off date to enforce the dog bylaws, the MC has started issuing notices to all pet owners who are possessing more than two dogs even before July 2010, when the dog bylaws were notified.

Besides, inspector Tarsem Rana allegedly arranged his meetings with girls in the lockup. Rana was the lockup in charge when Aman Kumar was arrested under the same charges by the UT police.

Suicide or homicide, police seeks clarification from medical board
Mohali, September 10
In a latest turn of events, the police, which has been ruling out foul play in Fiza’s mysterious death so far, today sought a clarification from the medical board whether the poison found in her viscera could have been administered forcibly or by mixing it with food or drinks. The police sought clarification on three points from the medical board. The board has prepared the post-mortem report of Fiza which mentions the cause of death as poisoning due to aluminium phosphide in presence of ethyl alcohol.

External probe committee grills doctors on duty

Reviving the investigations in the Anupama death case at the PGIMER, the external probe committee, which was constituted to look into the alleged negligence in the case, today grilled the doctors who had administered her treatment.

Girl accuses father of confining her to house

The girl along with her friend being taken to the Sector 26 police station in Chandigarh on Monday. High drama was witnessed in the Police Colony, Sector 26, when the daughter of a retired sub-Inspector called up the women helpline number alleging that her father had confined her to the house.

Challenging service regulations cost CITCO staff dear
Chandigarh, September 10
Challenging the CITCO employee service regulations without verifying the facts has landed at least 66 employees of the corporation in the dock. Orders have been passed to issue show-cause notices to 40 employees, another 16 have been asked to explain as to why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them for behaving in an irresponsible behaviour while signing a representation against the employees service regulations.

Transfer of property made easy

In a significant development related to the transfer of property, the board of members of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) today approved amendment to regulation 16 that governs the re-allotment of dwelling units. The decision will enable the transfer of property.

With a number of suicide cases being reported across the tricity, city-based psychiatrists suggest parents not to overlook abnormal behaviour of their wards. On World Suicide Prevention Day today, the experts said, "Parents often do not pay attention to the changed behaviour of their child, considering it an as 'ordinary' outcome of the day-to-day happenings."

Five suicides reported at Panchkula in one week

Five suicides were reported in the past week, but the Panchkula Police has no official record. All victims were women in the 20-30 age group. It was on August 31, when a 24-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.

590 cast votes for six seats

Hindustani rendition leaves audience spellbound

Eminent Hindustani vocalist Pt Kaivalya Kumar Gaurav left audience spellbound by his performance at IMTECH, Sector 39-A, today evening. He started his performance with “raga puria than shri” and weaved two compositions that he presented in “vilambit laya” and “drut laya”, both in “teen taal”. Gifted with a naturally high-pitched voice, Pandit Kaivalya Kumar's rendition of “ragas” saw natural “murki”, rigorous “tans”, and infallible rhythm. He took a long “alap” before he sang “bali bali jaoon thore” and “Khawaja Kutubdin”. He concluded his performance with a beautiful “bhajan” — “saaware aae jaoo, jamuna kinare mera gaun”.

Free eye camp from today
Chandigarh, September 10
A four-day free eye check-up camp is being organised at Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, from September 11 to 14. The camp will be held from 9 am to 5 pm and is open for people across the city. The camp, being organised by a private eye institute, will be conducted by a team of experienced ophthalmologists. . The attendees will also be given tips on better care of eyes, including suitable diet intake and exercises.

Class XI admissions a hard nut to crack for education dept

Class XI admissions in government schools of the city proved to be a hard nut to crack for the UT Education Department this year. Even after conducting three rounds of counselling that saw close to 12,000 students getting admitted to the senior secondary level in government schools in Chandigarh, it had to conduct a special round of admission to admit those who had failed to get admission during any of these counsellings.

Towns to get new bus stands
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 10
The Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) will construct modern bus stands at Sirhind, Bassi Pathana and Amloh towns of the district. Besides this, the PRTC is also going to construct bus stands at Patran and Mansa, said DPS Khurbanda, MD PRTC, while talking to mediapersons at Bassi Pathana today. He had come to inspect the site given by the municipal council for the bus stand.

One killed, another injured in accident
Banur, September 10
A youngster was killed and another injured in road accident near Banur last night. The deceased was identified as Ashok Kumar, 20, a resident of Bajigar Basti, Banur. As per information, the accident occurred when a speeding car hit a three-wheeler on the Chandigarh-Rajpura road near Rampur village. The victims were travelling in the three-wheeler which was going from Zirakpur to Banur. The car was coming from the opposite direction and was on the wrong side of the road.

Health dept initiates enquiry against DMC on graft charges
Fatehgarh Sahib, Sept 10
The state health department has initiated an enquiry against Dr Jagpal Singh, Deputy Medical Commissioner (DMC), Fatehgarh Sahib, on the complaint of Ajmer Singh, president, Sweet Makers Association. In the complaint, Ajmer Singh has demanded action against Dr Jagpal Singh for his alleged involvement in monthly collection of bribe from the sweet makers of the area. Besides this, Ajmer Singh has also served a legal notice to Dr Jagpal Singh for not making a payment of Rs 19,500 for the goods taken from his shop. He has urged the Health Minister to constitute a medical board to examine whether Dr Jagpal Singh is fit to serve as a doctor.

No set formula for compensation: HC
Chandigarh, September 10
In a clear cut departure from the earlier method of sticking to a set formula for calculating the compensation to be paid to accident victims, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled the method is meant only for assessing fair and adequate compensation. The Courts can travel beyond it to grant additional compensation.

SI’s son booked
Chandigarh, September 10
The son of a UT police sub-Inspector was booked along with two others for beating up a Khuda Lahora resident this evening. The police arrested Sarabjit, son of an SI posted at the Sector 19 police station, in a case of causing hurt and criminal intimidation.

Dust, fumes leave Kiwis fuming

The CLTA Complex engulfed in thick smoke during the re-carpeting of roads. The last-minute preparations for the upcoming Davis Cup tennis tournament at the CLTA complex has left the visiting New Zealand side fuming. The dust, fumes and heavy noise at the complex made the training session on the first morning quite uncomfortable for the visitors.

Patiala beat Ludhiana by innings
Chandigarh, September 10
The bowling attack of Patiala continued to trouble Ludhiana during the ongoing Katoch Shield cricket championship today. Ludhiana was bundled out for 143 runs in 43 overs in the second innings. Patiala won by an innings and 28 runs. The Patiala team earned 6 points including a bonus to maintain their top position in the points table.

Tennis star Vishnu Vardhan, a member of the Indian Davis cup squad, laid down the foundation stone of the tennis court complex at St Soldier’s School Sector 16. The tennis court complex, named ‘Parikarma’, will have an international-standard synthetic lawn tennis court.

PU beat GKSM in inter-college cricket tournament

The host team of Panjab University (campus) defeated GKSM Government College, Tanda, in a match during the ongoing inter-college cricket tournament for men (A-division) being played at the Panjab University grounds today. The team registered a 157-run victory over the rivals. For the PU team, Yuvraj (62), Deepak (29) and Karan (18) contributed the lion’s share. For the Tanda side, Vikas Chauhan (64) was the main scorer.
