The arrest of Sub-Inspector Naveen Sharma in a trap laid by the CBI today has brought the role of senior UT police officers under the scanner. Transcripts of the recorded conversation between the SI and complainant Shergill has reference to a senior IPS officer, who is in charge of the Economic Offences Wing of the UT police.
Retired CRPF man held for bid to rape 3 minors
Panchkula, September 6
A 60-year-old retired CRPF personnel was arrested by the police after he allegedly tried to rape three schoolgirls, one of them a student of Class II and the other two students of Class IV. He allegedly showed them porn movies after luring them with chocolates. The incident happened after their school was over.
Youth set ablaze by in-laws
Panchkula, September 6
In a rare case, a 24-year-old youth was set ablaze allegedly by his in-laws this morning. The victim,
Shivram, a resident of Baddi, was taken to the General Hospital, Sector 6,
Panchkula, from where he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. Shivram suffered 45 per cent burns and is stated to be in a critical condition.

Judgement day at PU today

Panjab University (PU) and its affliated colleges will go to the polls tomorrow. Knowing well that votes of first-year students of Panjab University can swing the election results on either side, student organisations lured students with liquor and lavish food and took them to "various places" in a bid to avoid other parties from approaching them.

Student bodies give norms the go-by, spend lakhs on poll

Panjab University instructions on election expenditure and financial accountability notwithstanding, student organisations have already spent lakhs of rupees in violating of the norms, while the authorities look the other way. Giving the Lyngdoh guidelines on restricting the poll expenditure to Rs 5,000 per candidate, student parties organised movies shows, trips and threw parties in discos to woo the voters.
MC removes over 80 dumped vehicles from Sector 48 market; shopkeepers oppose drive

High drama was witnessed at the motor market in Sector 48 today during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the municipal corporation. The drive was conducted at around 7.30 am. The shopkeepers at the motor market opposed the drive, shutting gates of the market.

Tehsildar accused of harassing man suffering from autism

Vijay Sheel Vig, a 49-year-old person suffering from autism and cerebral palsy, had to face the indifferent attitude of UT Tehsildar DS Balouria when the latter refused to attest an affidavit, which was required to obtain NOC from the Chandigarh Housing Board.

800 policemen to be on their toes

In a bid to ensure violence-free student council elections, as many as 800 police personnel will remain on their toes tomorrow. While nearly 562 police officials will be deployed in and around the Panjab University campus from 8 am, another 250 will keep a vigil over the activities at prominent colleges.

Gul Panag wants to complete her MA at PU

Bollywood actress from Chandigarh Gul Panag, who was a political science student at Panjab University, has written to the university to allow her to complete her MA which she left in 2002. The actresses mentioned that being a newcomer to the film industry, she could not take the PU exam in 2002 as she was busy with her work. However now she is at a stage where she can pick and choose her work, and can therefore easily appear in the exam.
