Illegal structures razed in Pinjore

Kalka, September 6
Continuing with its anti-encroachment campaign, a team of the local administration demolished several illegal structures in Pinjore.

Official sources confirmed that the team along with the police force demolished eight illicit structures of ‘pucca’ houses and several boundary walls constructed on government land with JCB machine at Rampur Seuri village of Pinjore, adjacent to the NH-22, near Surajpur.

Notably, around 10 bighas of the government land had been illegally encroached in Rampur Seuri village, following which the drive was carried out by the local administration.

Punjabi varsity to hold conference on diaspora

A meeting of the syndicate of Punjabi University was held under the chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh today.

While addressing syndics, the VC said keeping in mind its primary mandate of overall development of Punjabi language, literature and culture, the university has decided to hold a ‘Punjabi Diaspora Conference’ later this year. The inauguration of the Diaspora Centre will also be done at the same time.

Youth’s hands chopped off

Ambala, September 6
At least six unknown assailants chopped off both hands of a youth in Jandli village close to Ambala City here on Tuesday. The victim, Teenu, was rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh.

The police has registered a case against the unknown assailants. The police said the cause of attack could be an old enmity.

Teenu’s brother said the assailants were lashed with sharp weapons and battens. They attacked Teenu when he was coming to his house after meeting one of his friends. The assailants fled from the spot after after the crime.

The police said some of the assailants were identified and they would be arrested soon. SHO, Baldev Nagar police station, Pawan Sharma, said the police had raided at several places to search for the assailants.

Sexual harassment case
Complaint against PEC prof

An assistant professor of Punjab Engineering College (PEC) today lodged a complaint of sexual harassment against the deputy director of the college.

The professor, in presence of media, gave a written complaint against Dr AM Kalra, professor at civil engineering department and deputy director of PEC. The complaint was given at the public window of the Sector-9 police headquarters.

The victim has also alleged that Dr Manoj Datta, director of PEC, has been hand in glove with Kalra and has not been taking any action against him for the last two-and-a-half years.

The assistant professor also mentioned in her complaint that Kalra has been using obscene and sexually tainted words against her. She stated, “By offering temptation of important official charges and in the guise of horoscope consultation in his office, the widower tried to gain my proximity.”

The professor alleged that after failing to lure her, he threatened her and even misused his official position to harass and victimise her at workplace.

Complainant claimed that she had submitted a complaint against Kalra to the PEC authorities on February 9, 2010. However, no inquiry was initiated.

AM Kalra could not be contacted for comments, while PEC Director Dr Manoj Datta refused to comment.

Panchkula, September 6
After arresting fake IPS officer Aman Kumar, his wife and three others, the police here today nabbed his brother Raman Kumar for posing as a sub-inspector.

Raman was arrested from Sector-5 bus stand when he was roaming there in police uniform. He was produced in the court, from where he was sent to police remand till September 10.

The court has also extended remand of Aman Kumar for another five days till September 10. The police said the other family members, including Aman’s parents, could also be summoned for quizzing.

Notably, on August 30 the local police had arrested Aman Kumar, a resident of Mansa Devi Complex, and three others for cheating and extorting the people by impersonating as an IPS officer.

One held in shooting case

The police today has arrested one of the accused in the firing incident that took place at Phase V around 11.15 pm on Tuesday.

DSP RS Sohal said Nahar Singh, a resident of village Madanpura, has been arrested today. “A case of cheating has already been registered against him at Ropar,” said DSP Sohal adding that raids were on to nab the other culprits.

The police had registered a case of attempt to murder against Mehandi, Bains, Nahar Singh, Jinder and some other unidentified persons in this connection at Phase I police station.

940 boxes of wine seized

Chandigarh, September 6
The Special Technical Operation Cell of PCR today confiscated 940 boxes of foreign-made wine that was being smuggled to Rajasthan.

The police stopped a truck (number HR64-3922) for checking and found 940 boxes of English wine loaded in the truck. The consignment was to be supplied at Jodhpur in Rajasthan via Panchkula, Panipat, Rohtak, Rewari and Ajmer.

Truck driver Pawan Singh, a resident of Abdal village in Jammu, was arrested while his accomplice, Khem, managed to flee. A case has been registered at Mani Majra police station.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the accused had smuggled liquor to Jodhpur twice before.
