With the Punjab government levying an additional VAT of 0.5 per cent, the prices of essential commodities have gone up by 10-15 per cent. Buying pulses, oil and cooking gas has become a costly affair. "Instead of tiding over the problem, the government is aggravating the woes of the common man. The rising prices are burning a hole in our pocket," said Ramesh Verma, a bank employee.

Jagraon seems to have become a perfect hub of drug-peddlers as pharmaceutical drugs, including capsules, tablets and syrups and other habit-forming drugs like opium, smack, heroin, poppy-husk, liquor etc worth several lakhs of rupees have been recovered in the last one month. Peddlers get the drugs in good quantities from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where these are officially sold at controlled rates. These are then sold at higher price to youngsters and old drug-addicts in Jagraon, maintained the police.
