Admn again fails to convince Shivanand
Haridwar, August 27 Pandey cited the deteriorating health condition of the saint as one of the prime reasons for his visit to the Matra Sadan ashram. Till filing of the report, the talks were on with pro-Shivanand supporters, who reached the ashram in view of suspected forceful police action. Police arrangements were made and an ambulance was made available on the Matra Sadan ashram premise, which led to speculations that the administration can forcefully admit Swami Shivanand to hospital. Matra Sadan ashram inmate Brahamchari Dayanand feared that the administration could forcefully take away Swami Shivanand. He said that was the reason why Swami Shivanand had confined himself into a room. Circle Office Ajay Singh refused to divulge the administrative plan but added that they would take decision only after gauging all options. Meanwhile, Swami Shivanand again reiterated that he would not give up his agitation midway and even if the administration tries to force feed him, he would oppose it. |

Ramdev extends support to Matra Sadan saint
Haridwar, August 27 Swami Ramdev inquired about the health of Shivanand and later extended his support to the saint's agitation. On the issue of various government agencies slapping notices on him and Balkrishan, the Yog Guru termed it a conspiracy by the Congress to weaken his agitation on anti-black money and corruption. "We will give a befitting reply to these notices which are being sent to us to malign our image and weaken the movement against black money," said Ramdev. He also said the CBI was now being misused by respective union governments for their political and personal motive only", he added. On the notices being served by several government agencies, the Yog Guru made it clear that all notices would be replied with facts and figures as he had done no wrong. As Uttarkashi district was hit by cloudburst, Swami Ramdev has decided to visit the affected region and provide aid from the Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust. Swami Ramdev, while leaving to Uttarkashi, told TNS that dozens of Bharat Swabhiman Trust activists would distribute relief and refuted allegations that he was unconcerned about the plight of Uttarkhashi people when he was in New Delhi staging satyagraha. "I was regularly enquiring about the situation in Uttarkashi from Ramlila Maidan and several Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust and Bharat Swabhiman Trust activists had also contributed for relief work. Now, I am going there, while no Union Minister had even visited the region", said he. |

Balkrishan hits out at Centre for serving notices on him
Haridwar, August 27 Talking to TNS, Balkrishan, managing director of Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust, said that the Congress was deeply worried over the mass India response to the four-day satyagraha agitation over black money that that the yog guru had staged at New Delhi. This, he termed, was a major reason over the sudden volley of charges being levied against him and his associates by various government agencies. On the ongoing fake passport case, the hearing of which was deferred to September 7 by a special CBI court today in Dehradoon, the acharya said that all the charges levied against "From mind and body I am totally Indian, was Indian and will continue to be Indian. That’s why despite all the allegations and problems that I am facing, I am continuing to work for the cause of society Taking on corrupt politicians, particularly UPA government cabinet ministers, the acharya asked why did not the CBI or such agencies order an enquiry against those ministers involved in coal and similar other scams. “They are looting the country’s money, crushing the faith reposed in them by voters, but are left scot- free. Why are law-abiding citizens who work for social causes being targeted only?”asked Balkrishan. On the stalling of anti-black money agitation by the yog guru, Balkrishan termed it as a brief stop to regroup anti-corruption forces, saying that it was a temporary pause only, and he will fight till billions of rupees of black money stashed away in foreign bank accounts was brought back to India and declared as national asset. |

Salaries of transferred doctors to be stopped
Dehradun, August 27 While most of the doctors, who were earlier serving in remote areas of the state, have moved to the plains after transfers, the government is having a tough time moving the doctors serving in the accessible areas to the remote areas. “The situation has come to such a pass that the doctors serving in hill areas are in a hurry to join duty at the places of their posting that they are not waiting for the reliever to take charge from them, thus creating chaos at the primary health centres,” said Arya. Meanwhile, Dr BC Pathak, Principal Superintendent, Doon Hospital said the hospital would stop the salaries of five doctors who had not joined duty at the places of their posting. “Doon Hospital will not pay salaries to Dr KP Joshi, Dr SD Saklani, Dr NS Tomar, Dr Alok Jain and Dr YS Thapliyal, who continued to stay put at the hospital,” said Dr Pathak. |

BJP activists hold protest against govt functioning
Haridwar, August 27 The protesters were led by local MLA Madan Kaushik and they raised slogans against Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and his government. Kaushik said in six months of its rule the Congress had failed to provide a stable government. He cited the five-year rule of the BJP and said party Chief Ministers BC Khanduri and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank gave development-oriented governance while the present government was proving to be a bunch of self-oriented politicians. “We provided a stable, development-oriented government but the Congress had failed to live up to the expectations of the people of the state. Six months are enough to usher in development but the Cabinet ministers are busy vying for lucrative ministerial departments,” said Kaushik. District secretary of the party Vikas Tiwari said the Congress-led government had failed to check crime, poverty and corruption and had poorly carried out relief work in cloudburst-hit Uttarkashi district. The BJP leaders urged the people to ask questions to all Congress legislators and ministers about the tall claims made by them while forming the government. “The main aim of the Congress leaders in forming the government is to further personal interests and misuse public funds. Even the much-publicised Lokayukta Bill brought by the then Chief Minister BC Khanduri had been put on the back-burner by the Bahuguna government. This speaks of the intention of the government on the issue of corruption,” said Sanjana Sharma, secretary of the women wing. Meanwhile, the Congress termed today’s protest of the BJP as a flop show and said the latter had managed to bring in supporters by paying money. State general secretary of the Congress Committee JP Pandey said there was no public response to the protest and a large number of protesters were slum-dwellers who had been lured into joining the march in lieu of money. |

Registration of vehicles to go online soon
Dehradun, August 27 The e-State Register, once operational along with facility of e-payments, will revolutionise the functioning of the Transport Department. “The software and other aspects of the programme would allow the consumers to apply for licenses and make payments online, ending the problem of waiting and standing in long queues,” said BVRC Purushottam, Additional Secretary, IT. The register allows access to national vehicle information that was previously unavailable to users. The e-payment component will allow online payments at the regional transport office (RTO) to acc online along with the payments being made at the check posts and highways. Before the switch over from the online to the IT-enabled service, the Law Department is examining the e-payment component so that the system becomes compatible. The National Informatics Centre has prepared the software, including e-vahan and e-sarthi. Awaiting clearance from the Law Department, a new set of systems will be in place as was done before the e-procurement system computerisation of treasuries was launched. However, senior officials said going by the track record of the previous IT-enabled services launched in the state, the tendency to outsource the e-payment aspect to different public sector banks as has been done by the Electricity Department should be resisted. “For this kind of IT initiative to be effective, it should be able to inspire an IT-enabled culture in the state. If the law-enforcing agencies use it for nabbing vehicle robbers, the purpose would have been served,” said S Ramaswamy, Principal Secretary, Planning. |

‘Great sensitivity needed to deal with women issues’
Dehradun, August 27 Speaking at a legal awareness campaign on women rights organised by the State Women’s Commission today, Negi said, “A great deal of sensitivity is required while dealing with women issues, including problem of declining sex ratio between 0 and 6 years of age and harassment at workplace. Different agencies working on these issues should come together to tackle the problems effectively.” While initiating the discussion, chairperson of the State Women’s Commission Sushila Baloni said it was a matter of concern that women failed to take recourse to legal and institutional measures out of fear of reprisal. “Even educated women who are victims of domestic violence fail to lodge complaints against their husbands because of the fear of reprisal. We have to win the trust of the affected women so that they are encouraged to approach us,” she said. SP, STF, Sweety Agarwal also called for cooperation among different agencies and presence of more shelter homes in the state so that the aggrieved women could find a safe place while their case was being handled by the police. “The police can only take care of the legal and investigation part of the case. In the interim period, the victims of crime require care and shelter that has to be looked into by other agencies,” she said. In her presentation on crime against women, Agarwal also said while dealing with victims of trafficking, it had come to light that in 99 per cent of the cases, women were either blackmailed, coerced and exploited for the purpose of commercial sex, including prostitution. “Most of them were forced into the procession and require sensitive handling and persistent efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate in the society,” she said. Baloni said the commission was awaiting government’s approval for a policy for women. |
