A diligent Student

Post his wonderful stint in MTV Roadies 4 and a few television serials, Sahil Anand from Chandigarh will now be seen in an upcoming movie Student Of The Year

At last, we managed to find someone who owes his career to reality shows and numerous auditions that followed later. Sahil Anand from Chandigarh never gave up, neither when the going was tough nor when things were relatively easy! He chased his dream till the end and here he is playing a fat role in an upcoming movie Student Of The Year. Sahil likes to talk and we return with loads of stories!

Road to Roadies

Being part of the reality show MTV Roadies 4 was indeed a turning point in Sahil’s life. Modelling is what he always wanted to do, even when he was pursuing mechanical engineering from a college in Tangori, Punjab. He laughs, “A model — that’s what I wanted to be, but I wasn’t sure whether a 5’ 11” inches guy could make it to the ramp. And then some of the friends who were part of Roadies earlier, Ranjit Bajaj and Ayushman Khurana, asked me to audition for the show; the world opened once I was there. I travelled and got a lot of recognition,” says Sahil, not giving us enough chance to interrupt with questions.

Dream run

He knew there was no going back from here, no turning away from the arch lights he had got used to, “My parents asked me to finish studies, which I did; followed it with a job, pretty reluctantly though,” he cracks with laughter. Mumbai is where Sahil wanted to be, “I would crib about my job everyday; finally took the plunge and moved to Mumbai,” he adds. Sahil did almost more than twenty commercials for top brands before he auditioned for the dream project Student Of The Year (SOTY)!

Student once again

Sahil has worked in many TV soaps, including Sasural Simar Ka and Odhni, before he went to audition for SOTY. “A friend of mine told me that Dharma Productions were looking for a Punjabi guy for the film. I auditioned for it and was selected. Later on they told someone else was finalised for the role, but I was sure the role would come to me only. After ten days, they told me I was on board and the shooting for the film would begin soon.”

So far so good

Sahil plays Jeet in SOTY, a Punjabi character, and you bet he has stories to share from this once-in-a-lifetime experience. “My life changed when I got a chance to work with Karan Johar. Earlier, I would shout with excitement on seeing big actors, but on the mahurat shot of SOTY I had a chance to see and meet 20-30 celebrities from Bollywood; it was unimaginable,” he says with a lot of excitement. “Karan Johar is a great director, he gave me the freedom to act and improvise on my role accordingly,” says Sahil, who wants to do a Punjabi film.

Get real

After making it big through a reality show, Sahil leaves with words of wisdom that come from experience. “The concept of reality shows was popular when I did Roadies, but now every channel is making a reality show and everyone is acting in it. I would suggest to youngsters who think reality shows are the key to Bollywood that they should work on their acting skills and then try their luck in films.” Like he did of course!

It’s a party all week!

Why wait for the weekend to party? Just hit the best places any day and have loads of fun…

It takes a lot to pack a big club on a Tuesday night. But worldwide, many a bars do it right. No wonder some of the popular night-out destinations have an altogether separate list of the best weekday clubs. No matter however crowded, Wednesdays and Saturdays can never break-even for the owners. The efforts to rope in crowds on other days continue.

Thursday sounds good

Looks like Thursdays are the next big thing. It’s been a while since Peddlers, Under The Big Ben, has been organising Karaoke Nights on Thursdays while the Fridays and Sundays are reserved for different artists.

“Sometime back, we held the first Karaoke night on Thursdays. All my tables were full,” says Ginny Chawla, managing director, The Altius, about the recently introduced Karaoke World Championship Trials. He adds, “We treat the entire place as a lounge on the other days. Some days, there’s rock music playing while at other times there’s vintage or Bollywood or commercial. The people start pouring in quite early around seven because at the end of the day, they just want to sit and relax.”

For those on the other side of the hospitality industry, a swell crowd is all that matters to turn an executive Monday into an outgoing Saturday or a homely Thursday to a chic Wednesday! “In fact, I would rate our Thursdays even better than many of the Wednesdays,” says DJ Cherry, resident DJ, Blue Blazer. “We call them Retro nights and we get a very good clientele, right from the IT guys to the age group of 35s to 40s.” He adds, “The kind of people we get depends on the kind of music we play.” Look forward to a healthy dose of lounge and rock on any given week day.

It’s a new day

Giving a character to each day is equally important. Just sit; sip and soak in some old school reggae music on a Monday, practice singing on a Thursday and have an early dinner on a Tuesday. Says Ayushi, PR and marketing manager, Kava Hospitality, “We call the Sundays here Bubbly Sundays, wherein we promote wine and champagne. The idea is to create a relaxing day so that everybody can just sip and sit back. We have a soft music playing in the corner.” While the Sundays might be doing well for them, next in the pipeline is what else but a Thursday! “Very soon, we might start with something interesting on Thursdays and Fridays.” It’s so easy on a Wednesday and a Saturday. With half the crowds out, it’s only a matter of pulling them to one place or the other; on other days, it’s double the effort of first getting them out of the homes. Says DJ Cherry, “The only thing on week days is that people will start trooping in around 6 or 6.30 pm and quietly sip a drink or two, while around 11.30 or twelve, you’ll only find two to three tables.” Early finish might be due to a full-fledged work day the next day, but a Monday evening need not feel like a Monday morning!

Colour of fantasy

An installation by Manjunath Kamath
On canvas: An installation by Manjunath Kamath

The Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi is organising a video installations and a power-point presentation of his lifetime work by acclaimed artist Manjunath Kamath. Kamath is a well-known painter, sculptor and video installation artist — one of the most sought after new media artists of the country.

Manjunath Kamath is bringing three of his video installations which would be set up at the venue of the event. Apart from these installations, he would be showing slides of paintings, sculptures and other videos during his presentation. His presentations are filled with humour, wit and anecdotes.

Born in Mangalore in 1972 Kamath did his BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) from Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore; He was the Artist in Residence, School of Art & Design, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, UK, followed by a Charles Wallace Scholarship, UK. He has exhibited his work extensively, in solo and group shows in India and abroad.

Manjunath Kamath compels the viewer to think and participate in his thought-provoking works. His imaginations bring forth different experiments, which he shares with the viewer. His need to draw and hold his viewers’ attention is palpable in his varied use of painting, drawing, sculpture, video and found objects. With the help of these different genres he creates narratives that are gripping in content, even though they are composed of simple, commonplace elements. Thus Kamath’s forte ultimately lies in creating fantasies out of the ordinary.

In an age when video art and installations have given a new language to Indian contemporary art, an innovative approach has pervaded the art scene, and artists such as Manjunath Kamath, use art as a vehicle to address identity issues like gender, sexuality and feminism.

Through his penchant for fantasy and the absurd he is able to convey his thoughts and ideas in a manner not seen in Indian art before. The narrative is packed with details which provide important clues to the social satire, the wit and the clever ridicule infused in the infinite oddities of human situations.

Manjunath Kamath tells stories with his images. His narratives, however, are altered and adjusted constantly, adapting fluidly according to the environment they are narrated in, and resulting in a different meaning each time a story is told. As a visual artist, Kamath feels impelled to regularly reinvent his method of storytelling. By relentlessly working on his articulation and modernising his techniques, he continuously updates his visual vocabulary.

Manjunath explains about his thought process and technique, “My works are inspired by the day to day life spend by any individual who is observant of things going around. I am a capturer of the immediate in painterly images. Taking cues from the conversations with friends, relatives, street smart guys, fashion aficionados, art lovers, story tellers, children, myth makers, journalists, art critics and so on, I try to go beyond the face value of the words uttered and the mental images created. I look at the possibilities of the unsaid and chances of the unrevealed in my works. So they are always mysterious and playful….. My world view is quite humorous. I would like to laugh at things and through this laughter I could get into the unrevealed sides of events. This is the same attitude that I take in my video works. I create imaginary situations as in the fables and parables, through claymation models. They create one kind of narrative and leave it open for the viewers interventions. This is the same method that I use in my small scale works and drawings.”

The year ahead

If your birthday is August 23...

You will have a clear outlook towards your career. Finances will improve with your wise approach. You will have significant happiness in your personal relationships. Still, there is a hint of little disturbance in professional relationships. Your biggest asset is your sense of humour. You should try and use it to your benefit. Don't spend too much to impress others. Some people will promise more than they can deliver. Be careful as the chances as there may be gaps in your friendships. Others may demand your time. Before you make any commitments ensure that no one ends up taking advantage of your kindness. Overall it will be a positive year but someone you think you can trust will let you down. Don't let pride come in the way of the decision-making process. Listen to what subordinates have to say. What you say in a meeting or over email can come back to bite you very quickly. Don't be indolent and don't let so-called hitches discourage you. You will obtain excellent results.

Those who work in a team should watch out for an envious co-worker. You must fight for your right to be creative, because your talents might be the only way for you to get out of the pit. Goals, which seem simple, may be more complicated than you think. Emotions appear a bit strong as you may have to pour effort into maintaining a cheerful mood. The need for change may become apparent this week but discussions before spending may be wise. Small problems friends have, may grow into bigger issues if you get involved. Being asked to help does not insure the right to get personal particularly where karmic energies may be working. You need to commit to a diet program to get into proper shape. This is the time when you will really feel that the couch is your best friend and the thought of working out at the gym could be overwhelming. A person you assume to be reliable may not live up to your expectations. If you're just looking for a little flirtatious fun, then that's not a problem.

Mood: Emotional but happy. Compatible signs: Scorpio and Pisces. Lucky colours: Yellow and Sea green. Lucky days: Thursday. Lucky numbers: 7, 9, 11, 60, 80

Being creative with hair is something we all like to do. For, hair-do does make a big fashion statement. It can be in the form of hair rebonding, straightening or perming; with the former being a rage these days!

Rebonding/straightening is a chemical hair treatment that makes your hair straight, sleek and shiny. While hair perming is a hairstyle produced by treatment with heat and chemicals to give waves and curls to your hair. Basically in all these procedures, the chemical bonds in your hair are broken, rearranged and again bonded back accordingly to the shape you desire.

The steps

  • First a cream softener or relaxant is used to break the hair structure.
  • Then hair is blow-dried and a flat iron or perm rods are kept depending upon the shape of the hair you want.
  • Then a neutralizer is applied to set the hair bonds and stabilize their new shape.

What to ask for at a salon?

  • Visit a reputed salon with experienced hair stylist.
  • Look for keratin products which are formaldehyde-free or has very little formaldehyde.
  • Hair smoothening products should not contain methylene glycol or other ingredients that are treated as formaldehyde (like formalin, methylene oxide, paraform, formic aldehyde, etc).

The side effects

On hair: Because the structure of hair is irreversibly altered after these procedures, chemically-treated hair shafts become weak and fracture more easily and need good post-treatment care. The process can also cause damage and burns to the skin and scalp. Maintaining the rebonded/permed look means continual touch-ups, but there should be a gap of at least six months. But every repetition puts you at further risk of hair loss, so try keeping the frequency of such procedures to minimum possible.

On salon workers: Since most of the cream softeners contain formaldehyde and it gets released into the air during procedure, its long-term exposure in the workplace has been associated with an increased risk of cancer. Salon workers have reported difficulty in breathing, wheezing, nose bleeds, skin rashes, itching and stinging of the eyes. The health regulatories should test salon air during treatments to determine formaldehyde levels, and should ensure that there is adequate ventilation and appropriate personal protective equipment for workers performing treatments. Also the workers should be given information and training on hazards of formaldehyde.

Damage control

In an unfortunate event that your rebonding experience goes wrong and cannot be fixed right, it’s better to go for a haircut. Take care of your hair with regular oiling and conditioning. Go for a diet rich in proteins, vitamins and antioxidants. No other chemical treatment for at least six months. Visit your dermatologist and with a little bit of patience and time, your hair will recover.

Shades of grey

Negative side: Indresh Malik
Negative side: Indresh Malik

Famous for his role of Rajeev Bhalla in 12/24 Karol Bagh, Indresh Malik currently is enjoying playing a grey role in Madhubala. Here he talks about his role and experience.

How challenging is the role of Bittuji after Rajeev Bhalla?

It is a very challenging role. Playing a grey character is trickier than playing a villain. My character that of a secretary who is very loyal to his boss superstar RK and is willing to go to any lengths for him is fun. He is manipulative, selfish, charming and cunning too.

How is it with Vivian D' Sena?

He is a buddy and we play pranks on each other. We chat and spend most of our time together. I feel this friendship translates on screen too.

The show hasn't delivered expected TRPs…

It is too new now. The main story is just starting and I know the audiences will love it.

How did acting happen to you?

It totally happened by chance in my case. I was lucky to get a break and I ended up doing one show after the other and ended up doing 40 ads.

Which ad is closest to your heart?

One of my earliest ads was of Kaun Banega Crorepati with Amitabh Bachchan. It was surreal when he came and stood next to me. I was scared and shocked for a second, as I couldn't believe my eyes. He is so down to earth and humble. Later we talked for a bit and found out that we were from the same college Kirori Mal. It was an awesome experience.

You have businesses too?

Yes I do. I run a costume design business in Delhi which my wife manages. We cater to 150 clients abroad. — HRM

Indulge
A slice of China
Jasmine Singh

Just when we thought the rainy season was over, we are showered with the mercy drops almost everyday. And well if the weather god is being kind, how about making the most of it? How about digging into some authentic Chinese flavours? Mainland China-26 whips up a new menu which has a good mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian delights. Something spicy, something light, the menu has it all.

The vegetarian menu card shows some interesting names that have been created equally interestingly! With baked vegetarian puff, wok tossed potatoes yue yang style, longevity gin seng soup, burnt garlic clear soup, black pepper fried rice, broken noodles with zucchini and date ice-cream with roasted almonds, the vegetarian platter looks quite full. Says Manish Gupta, director of Mainland China, who goes by the funda that customers are always right.

“People in Chandigarh are well travelled, they have tasted various cuisines and they know what they are eating. The idea to bring out a new menu is to give them a change keeping the authentic flavours and taste in tact.”

The non-vegetarians too can look up to something interesting in the new menu. Assorted non-veg dim sum, curried chicken puff, steamed chicken rice pearls, pan grilled crab cakes, pan fried lamb, steamed prawns with garlic, aromatic chicken with garlic, wok tossed lamb with garlic and black bean, this platter too can delight the taste buds.

Getting into the Chakravyuh

Teaming up: Cast and crew of the film Chakravyuh

Director Prakash Jha, Arjun Rampal, Abhay Deol, Esha Gupta and Anjali Patil unveiled the first look of upcoming political thriller Chakravyuh.

Talking about Chakravyuh, Prakash Jha said, “My message through Chakravyuh is to underline the issue of naxalism, the tragedy that is unfolding in various parts of the country today. And I think if you diagnose any problem by studying it very well, you will get its solution too.”

Speaking on the occasion, Arjun Rampal said, “It’s my second film with Prakash after Raajneeti. The best part about working with him is that since his films are very topical, we get to learn a lot from them. After playing the role of a cop in Chakravyuh, I got to know our cops’ problems, their life, and how they get trapped into the ‘chakravyuh’ unknowingly sometimes.”

While Abhay Deol said, “Chakravyuh is my first action film. Boht shauk raha hai action filmmon ka pehle se hee, so I decided to focus entirely on my work while shooting. I’ve done a lot of stunts in the film and I really enjoyed doing them.”

The release date is October 24, 2012.

Joan okay with Cheryl’s boyfriend!

Former Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole's mother Joan Callaghan is impressed by her daughter's new boyfriend Tre Holloway.

The 29-year-old Promise This hitmaker has embarked on a romance with American dancer Holloway and he has been given the seal of approval by her mother, who had a strained relationship with her daughter's ex-husband Ashley Cole, reported a publication online.

"Cheryl has described Tre as the polar opposite to Ashley. He's intelligent, caring and understanding. Many people think Tre's like a blend of Cheryl's exes, but he's a well brought up middle-class boy with nice manners, just like Cheryl's previous boyfriend Derek Hough," a source said.

"Yet he's also got an edgy vibe to him, like Ashley.

Importantly, Cheryl's mum loves him," it added. — PTI
