One held for placement fraud
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 22 According to the information, the conman had presented his visiting card, in which his identity was mentioned as M Singh, Manager (HR), Samsung Electronic Company, while his identity card revealed his identity as M Bhadoria, Assistant (HR). The college placement officer Dr Bhupinder Singh got suspicious about the person and asked the company about him. But the company denied any links with him and later he was handed over to the police. Dr Singh said that few days ago, the conman, who identified himself as M Singh, Manager (HR), Samsung Electronic Company, had telephoned him and said the company needed some able engineers and later sent an e-mail and informed that the placement drive would be organised in the college on August 22. He said 32 students appeared in the written test for the placement and after group discussion 5 students were selected by the con man. The placement officer said he got suspicious about the person when he found different names mentioned in his visiting and identity cards. Therefore, he immediately contacted Swati Gupta, service manger (HR), and sought information regarding the person. But on receiving the reply he found that the company had no links with him. He said without any delay he informed Principal, Dr Manjit Singh Grewal, regarding the issue and police was called on the spot. The police have
taken the con man into its custody. SHO Devinder Singh said the case was being investigated and action would be taken against the accused as per the law. |
Couple booked for fraud
Chandigarh, August 22 The police said a house at Sector 35 was sold to the complainant by the couple but no papers showing the transferring of the house in his name were given to him. The police has registered a case of cheating under section 420 and 120-B, IPC, against the couple. |

Patwari held accepting bribe of Rs 5,000
Mohali, August 22 The accused, Harmesh Kumar, posted at Mullanpur office had demanded Rs 20,000 from the complainant, Ram Krishan Sharma, for rectifying a mistake in the record related to his 11-marla plot at Nayagaon. Sharma said the accused had harassed him for at least one month and demanded Rs 20,000 for doing the work. “When I showed my inability in giving the amount, he asked for Rs 10,000. Then I approached the vigilance department to teach him a lesson,” said Sharma. Following the complaint, the vigilance team led by Patiala range DSP KD Sharma laid a trap and caught Harmesh Kumar red-handed while accepting Rs 5,000 as first installment. A case has been registered against Harmesh Kumar by the police under the Prevention of Corruption Act. — TNS |

Chandigarh, August 22 The state government had initiated the project in July, 2011, and the works were stipulated to be complete within eight months. However, the ground situation is that construction of some of the proposed stadiums is still in the initial stages. In reply to a query under the Right to Information Act (RTI Act), GMADA has stated that due to a ban imposed on mining of sand and gravel by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the work has slowed down and the possible imposition of penalty against the contractor concerned is under consideration. Four stadiums as a part of Group-A were to be constructed at the cost of Rs 14.26 crore and three under Group-B were to come up at the cost of Rs 15.10 crore. According to GMADA officials, these were to be completed by March 2012. Kuljit Singh Bedi, municipal councillor, who had sought the information under RTI Act, said GMADA in its reply had expected the works to be completed by August 2012, but the works remain virtually standstill. If construction of some other major government buildings in Mohali, including police complex, is continuing, then construction of stadiums for the youth should not be a problem, he added. |

Just after four minutes, Hardik again strike and doubled the team’s lead while Akashdeep took the score to 3-1 in the 47the minute. In the second half of the game, Hardik scored the third goal in the 52th minute wile Akashdeep scored the fifth goal to seal team’s victory. CRZ, Sonepat, played a 3-3 draw against MGPS, Doraha, at the Hockey Stadium of Sports Complex, Sector 42, here this evening. In another match, CRZ defeated MGPS by 3-1. The MGPS side scored the first goal through Vishal in the 9th minute of game. He smartly converted the awarded penalty corner to provide lead for the team but the CRZ team came back in the match after Mohit strike the wooden plank in the 17th minute, the team scored the second goal through Robin in the 27th minute to tale the score to 2-1. In 38th minute of the match, Deepak of CRZ took the score to 3-1 but Dharminder of the MGPS team reduced the margin to 3-2 in the 56th minute of the match. In the dying minutes of the game, MGPS levelled the score through Arpit (51th minute). The third match of the day went in favor of Surjit Hockey Academy by 19-0. |
Feroz, Jairaj lift national inter-school golf cup

Feroz and Jairaj both the students of DAV School, Sector 15, won the championship in the team event of the championship. The duo defeated the golfers of St. John’s School, Sector 26, on the last of the tourney by 4-strokes. The due finished at the runners-up spot in the last edition of the competition. Meanwhile, in the individual category, Feroz finished third and Jairaj stood fourth. Earlier, also both the players had represented the nation in international tourneys. “We are happy that we have picked up and improved our performance from last year. We received a tough competition. The deciding day was tough to play but we managed to defeat our opponents,” said the duo. Adding further, “Many schools from the north participated in the competition and moreover, golf standard is rising day by day, making it tougher to win any tourney,” said the duo. Feroz has been playing for the past six years while Jairaj is playing the game for the past eight years. The players are being undergoing a daily practice session under professional golf coach Jesse Grewal. They added, “We are making ourselves comfortable in grass-root level. Although we have played international tourneys and national-level competition also but we need to concentrate more on certain shortcoming. Along with studies, we are getting a tough and concentrated coaching form our coach. Hopefully, we shall carry our performance in the upcoming events also,” said both. On other hand, the school management has also decided to facilitate both the golfers. “After winning laurels for the country and the city, the management of the institution will facilitate the players in the upcoming days. The two have brought up the standard of the game and also the name of the institution. Hopefully, they will continue toplay well and achieve laurels,” said Rakesh Sachdeva, principal of the school. |
