sports stadiums
Shortage of sand, gravel delays construction work
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 22
Shortage of sand and gravel has apparently held up an ambitious project of constructing seven sports stadiums in Mohali district. This, while depriving sports enthusiasts of facilities to pursue their interests, also carries the risk of cost overruns.

The state government had initiated the project in July, 2011, and the works were stipulated to be complete within eight months. However, the ground situation is that construction of some of the proposed stadiums is still in the initial stages.

In reply to a query under the Right to Information Act (RTI Act), GMADA has stated that due to a ban imposed on mining of sand and gravel by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the work has slowed down and the possible imposition of penalty against the contractor concerned is under consideration.

Four stadiums as a part of Group-A were to be constructed at the cost of Rs 14.26 crore and three under Group-B were to come up at the cost of Rs 15.10 crore.

According to GMADA officials, these were to be completed by March 2012.

Kuljit Singh Bedi, municipal councillor, who had sought the information under RTI Act, said GMADA in its reply had expected the works to be completed by August 2012, but the works remain virtually standstill. If construction of some other major government buildings in Mohali, including police complex, is continuing, then construction of stadiums for the youth should not be a problem, he added.
