The flirt school
When was the last time a guy approached you suavely? It’s time they raised their standards and shows like
Superdude certainly offer the right tips…
Flirting found a new meaning with UTV Bindaas’ show Superstud last year. This year the second season returns as Superdude, ready to teach the hunks how to win the heart of a woman in the right manner! And for the auditions this time, Ashmit Patel, Madhura Naik and Sofia Hayat were at Hotel Chandigarh Beckons, Sector-42, Chandigarh, on Friday. We catch up. Super man
Dressed up formally in a grey suit and blue shirt, Ashmit Patel surely looked the perfect master to the super-dudes. What’s different this season? “This time it is definitely bigger and better. I’ll be looking out for qualities such as self-confidence, real attitude and an X-factor. For rest of the grooming and smoothening of the rough edges of the guys, I’m there.” We wonder what kind of benefits the show provides to the contestants. “Confidence to approach a girl is of utmost importance and it’s not only for asking them out, but for a general conversation maybe with one’s boss or colleague.” The show’s concept is the same - how to train the guys to overcome their weaknesses. Ashmit, who is presently busy with the Superdude auditions, is looking forward for the final thirteen contestants who will have to perform some interesting tasks in the Superdude mansion. Along with this reality show, he has Bollywood projects like Supermodel opposite Veena Malik and Parivaar that will be shot in Rajasthan. “Parivaar is a family oriented movie that stars Sara Khan, Aman Verma and Mukesh Khanna. I’m really not the kind of person who restricts himself to television or movies; I’m open to whatever comes my way.” Ashmit also has a Punjabi movie Dil Sada Luteya Gaya lined up, the shooting for which is due to begin soon. “I’m trying to speak fluent Punjabi and I guess it will take some time. I’m excited to see Jatt and Juliet and Carry on Jatta.” Controversies haven’t lately found him but still we are curious to know what’s on between him and Veena Malik? “I have not really been in touch with her,” there he finds a diplomatic reply to it. Spilling no beans about his relation with sister Ameesha Patel, Ashmit says, “I have a blood bond with her and it is unsaid love, which I don’t think needs any publicising.”
Two’s company
Sofia Hayat, who is from London, manages to speak Hindi with her UK accent and will be Ashmit’s companion in short-listing the best Superdude. We wonder what kind of ‘dude’ she is looking forward to. “We are definitely looking out for a gentleman, who sees beyond just a physical relation with a woman.” Sofia made her Bollywood debut with the movie Diaries of a Butterfly and has also done a few Hollywood movies. “I have worked with BBC as a host and I have interviewed stars like Angelina Jolie, Will Smith and Collin Farrell. Also, I have done Bollywood movies like Goodnight and Bhai Ka Maal, which will release in November, and Love Potions, based on Shakespeare’s play and set for release in March.” Sofia has tested the working environment in Bollywood and Hollywood; what comparisons can she draw? “I think India allows too many non-professionals in the film industry. But now Bollywood is growing, so I would definitely want to make a mark here.” sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

The Bollywood import
Actor Priyanshu Chatterjee of Tum Bin fame has no qualms about acting in Punjabi films
When a known face of Bollywood decides to hear a Punjabi film script, and then decides to say ‘yes’, we have one reaction —hurray! Bollywood actor of Tum Bin and Pinjar fame, Priyanshu Chatterjee is the latest addition to the list of Bollywood actors taking a plunge into Punjabi cinema. Priyanshu makes his debut with Sirphire. He plays the role of Inder Gill who doesn’t have a life outside college. For the actor who is doing pretty well in Bollywood, how did the thought of Punjabi cinema occur? We expect Priyanshu to come up with the predictable one—I always wanted to do Punjabi movie! He laughs, “I come from Delhi, have lived a good part of my life in a locality that had a strong Punjabi influence. When I was narrated the script
for Sirphire I said yes, why not.” So, this is where the story begins. “Yes, and I believe it will translate into a more fruitful journey. I have worked hard for Sirphire, I worked on my diction. In fact, off the sets also I would speak in Punjabi. So much so, in due course of time I could make out the difference between Amritsari dialect and how Punjabi is spoken in other parts of Punjab,” adds Priyanshu who did not go full throttle when it came to movies after his first super-duper hit Tum Bin. “I did a couple of films after Tum Bin as well, like Pinjar. Then there was a little breather and I did movies like Bhootnath and Julie. I did not go missing,” he breaks the conversation with his laughter. “The release and publicity of the movie depends on producers. I did some great movies, but they were not released or publicised well,” shares Priyanshu. Once bitten twice shy, hope he is playing safe on the Punjabi ground. “I have done justice to my role. Most Punjabi films have actors who are singers. Sirphire stars Punjabi singer like Preet Harpal and Roshan Prince, so I bet the audiences will definitely notice it.” Not to forget, they would come looking for an intense looking new Bollywood addition as well!

Go-getter
Saina Nehwal has just returned to a roaring welcome from her super-studded victory at the recent Olympics. Mary Kom has booked her place in the race for winning the gold in the biggest ever sporting event. While both women are busy brining laurels to the country, the fact remains that women are still being underestimated and restricted to their homes. Breaking the shackles, Tanvi Bhargava, a 17-year-old, is heading the soccer team in her school, Bhavan Vidyalaya, and is doing it with immense pride. We find out about what makes her a go-getter. Motivational factor
Coming from an intellectual family, Tanvi’s parents, Dr Akhil Bhargava and Dr Manjari Bhargava, are her motivational factors. Never forcing the child into academics, her parents have constantly pushed Tanvi towards excellence. Also, her older brother Ankit Bhargava, who introduced her to the soccer field, has stood by her during the tough times. “Balancing out sports and studies is not easy. Without the support of my family, none of this would have been possible,” she says. She also thanks the real pillars of support, “My coaches, Rakesh Bakshi and Surinder Singh, never gave up hope in my capabilities.” Feathers in the cap
Securing a cool 87 per cent in her class X, this youngster is all set to move to the US to take her football career forwards. Her tryst with soccer began in Class VII, when she was selected for the nationals in Bhuvneshwar. One of the 50 selected from all over India, she took rigorous training under coaches from Manipal and West Bengal for three months In 2008, Tanvi went for her first international tournament to Vietnam with the Asian Football Confederation and her team stood second in the under 13 tournament. Bagging 11 goals in five matches, Tanvi was also selected in the under 14 in 2009 and went for a camp in Sri Lanka. Standing first in the match, she was announced the top scorer, internationally. In the following year, Tanvi pushed her team forward to bring it to the top 50 positions at an international level. In 2011, Tanvi was chosen by Adidas among the top 20 players to go to Real Madrid in Spain for a camp. The only girl in the team was then offered a place in the Real Madrid Academy. An active player in all sporting events, she was also a national-level equestrian and was declared the best girl rider in 2007. Also an expert in Bharatnatyam, the girl is a bag of exceptional talent. Strengths and weaknesses
Her will and attachment with everything that she has ever done has been her biggest strength. “Once I have put my heart and soul into the game, nothing has stopped me from leaping ahead,” she says. Flipside of being an achiever
“People tend to become enemies. No one really wants to celebrate success. They are just keen on pulling you down,” Tanvi says. Having come across very few people who have been really happy for her, she stands by the viewpoint that being an achiever one has to really live up to people’s expectations. Words of wisdom
For this young girl, it is about never giving up on your dreams. “If you have a passion in life and you do nothing about it, trust me, you will die with this regret in your heart,” she says. With women soaking up to Olympic glory, she humbly suggests that people should change their perception towards women and stop underestimating them. vasudha@tribunemail.com

The year ahead
If your birthday is August 11...
Don't self medicate as chances of drug dependency may increase. Simply ignore those who approach you for temporary loans. If communications and discussions don't go well- you could lose your cool and say things, which you would regret later. Think before you speak. Love journey is sweet but short lived. You will be in a position to put together major land deals. Tax and insurance matters will need some attention. Number 11 makes you a romantic in the idealistic sense of the word. People born on this day are least selfish lovers, and they are extremely considerate. They won't push you to do anything. They are tolerant and accepting. Emotionally, you would be unsure of what you really want. You would be taken for a ride if you behave too generous with your finances. Stubborn attitude especially in friend circle should be avoided. You will have problems in convincing your partner to stick to your plans. You need to take extra care of your luggage if you are travelling. Preach a 'mind your own business' attitude. Projects and plans slated for the weekend appear to go well with good support, especially from elder members or spouse of any sign. Financial transactions would suddenly increase, plan things in advance. This 2012-13 is more about health and relationship. Take care of them. You may have to spend money on the health treatment of a family member. Well meaning friends are sometimes the most challenging ones to handle. Respect their opinion but do your own thinking. Keep a watch on your health. Minor health troubles may worry you throughout. Recurring mental tensions may spoil your health. You understand emotions and feelings very well. Expect an interesting time in your romantic life where you could possibly see new side to old people. Mood: Calm and satisfied Compatible signs: Gemini, Pisces Lucky colours: Pale blue & mauve Lucky days: Tuesday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 2, 11, 12, 19, 22

Pack a punch
More and more girls are taking to martial arts for not only keeping fit, but also for self-defence in case need be
Thirty-two-year old Pankaj Thakur begins her mornings with gusto. Five minutes before 5:30 am, she is at her class in Sector 33 where she practices taekwondo. A fitness and beauty expert, its three months back that she thought it was time to try something new. “I believe each girl must learn self-defence techniques. I am glad I picked it up,” she says. “In today’s time, one cannot avoid late nights. And there are dangers lurking around,” she adds. Tanvir, a software developer, picked up martial arts for the same reason as Pankaj. While we caught up with her practicing punches at RP Singh’s Karate classes on a sweltering evening in Sector 15, one couldn’t miss that glint of pride, “I wanted to be strong not only to defend myself, but any other girl who might need my help.” For Rosy Sharma, it proved to be a
blessing in disguise. When in school, she followed her cousin to a martial arts class and what she learnt was wonderful. “Hardwork, patience and confidence were what I got after training for five years in martial arts,” says Rosy. Medals and distinction of being the best fighter in Chandigarh for three years consecutively is just the bonus! Did she ever have to use her skills in real life? “Never; but I still walk with the confidence that I can use the moves if need be,” says Rosy, who works with a telecom company and is also a mother now. Out of 21 years of life, Ekjot Kaur has been practicing taekwondo for seventeen years now. Having done a degree in sports science, she teaches martial arts with her father BS Handa. “When I was a child, my asthma was so bad that doctors felt sorry for me. But my dad took up the challenge; he got my body fit through martial arts,” says Ekjot. Her father not only won the challenge but also gave her a career she loves. “I am really keen on teaching martial arts to girls. Today be it work or a party, a woman may have to go alone and face many dangers. One can use one’s body as a weapon and save oneself from any untoward incident,” says Ekjot, who has so far trained 1,000 girls but considers the number too small. “I want each girl to learn at least the basic moves,” she emphasises. Are you game? mona@tribunemail.com
Battle of sexes
Suraj Verma from The Kings Academy of Martial Arts not only trains many girls in the art, but also has many women instructors in the team. And, yes, they do not have separate classes for girls. “The basic premise is to train. Gender is no handicap here. Any girl can take on any big, burly boy provided she knows the moves.” This father-daughter duo spends alternate evenings practicing punches. Ajeet Singh and his six-year-old daughter Arnaaz have been taking taekwondo classes for the last six months. Arnaaz looks forward to the evenings when the classes are held. Her dad explains the move, “I wanted to spend quality time with my girl. Also, I wanted her to be strong, confident and disciplined.”
