Laptop, cell phones found
Mohali, August 10
The Mohali police investigating the death of Anuradha Bali, aka Fiza Mohammed, recovered three mobile phones and a laptop from her house today. Swarndeep Singh, SP (City), told mediapersons that three mobile phones and a laptop were recovered, but nothing incriminating had been found. Another CD has been recovered, but it contains photographs of family functions, he said.

Social activist fails to turn up

Salim Alwi, a social activist of Bulandshahar in Uttar Pradesh, who was summoned by the Mohali police today, could not reach the city for recording his statement.

The cash recovered from Fiza’s house on Thursday may provide vital clues to the police as she had jotted down the date, names and mobile phone numbers of persons, who gave her the money, on some wads of currency notes.

UT SSP (City) Desraj Singh (sporting black cap) during an interaction session with residents at Burail in Chandigarh on Friday. High drama over baby's death
Chandigarh, August 10
The grieving father of the baby (inset) who died at the GMCH-32, Chandigarh, allegedly due to negligence on the part of a nurse on Friday High drama was witnessed at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, when a two-month old baby died allegedly due to negligence on the part of a staff nurse here today. The baby's father, Rajiv kumar, alleged that the condition of the baby deteriorated after the staff nurse mixed two injection medicines due to which the baby died immediately.

Rain exposed the poor quality of material used in the repair of roads in the city when a portion of the road in front of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, caved in on Friday. The caved-in portion is about 2.5 feet in width and 5 feet in depth. Damaged manhole poses threat
Mohali, August 10
A Mohali resident complained that a damaged stormwater manhole near his house in Sector 68 was posing a serious threat to the building. Ajmer Singh said that water from the damaged sewer had entered the basement of his house, endangering the building. The rain had added more to the problem.

Problems plague CTU

Condemned buses at the CTU workshop in Industrial Area, Phase 1, Chandigarh. Very old buses, the delay in purchasing new ones, inadequate funds for purchasing diesel and a shortage of drivers and conductors have come to haunt the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU), the backbone of the city’s pubic transport system that daily ferries 1.83 lakh passengers.

No separate buses for students in afternoon hours yet

Anupama's tragic death has exposed the Students rush at a bus stop in Sector 18, Chandigarh. cracks in the working of the Chandigarh Transportation Undertaking (CTU), which is finding difficult to manage the rush of students in the peak hours in the morning as well in the afternoon. While it has managed to start 20 exclusive buses for schoolchildren in the morning hours, though not fully streamlined as yet, as reported by the newspaper on Wednesday, it is finding difficult to make separate buses available to students in the afternoon hours, without which the whole exercise to control school students' rush seems futile.

Authorities busy in passing the buck

Every time when residents complain about waterlogging problems, authorities concerned, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and Municipal Corporation (MC), play the blame game. Instead of ensuring a proper drainage system in the city, they blamed each other responsible for the problem of waterlogging. When HUDA is contacted, they say the sweepers deployed by the MC used to choke the gullies as they dump the garbage into it resulting in waterlogging.

Online admission process finds few takers

For yet another year the education department of Chandigarh has found few takers for online registration of class XI admission forms. While more than 90% of allotted seats have already been filled and the third counselling session is soon to start for the remaining seats, the number of students who applied online has not gone beyond 350-400, despite the fact that the department received more than 15,000 applications this year.

Man who attacked on suspended VC released on bail

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted bail to Zora Singh, a resident of Khanouri village, who was booked by the district police for hurting Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, a suspended Vice-Chancellor of Guru Granth Sahib World University by opening fire at him on the university campus on August 1, 2011.

Plantation drive launched

The Rotary Club, Dera Bassi, has launched a plantation campaign to mark the death anniversary of a former member of rotary club, Varinder Jain. Police arrests drug-peddler

The district police has arrested a drug-peddler during checking and has recovered intoxicant tablets, injections and powder. The SSP Hardial Singh Mann told that the district police has been directed to erect check-points and to intensify checking of vehicles and patrolling, so that anti-social elements particularly drug-sellers could be arrested.

Residents complain to DC against closure of gates
Patiala, August 10
Perturbed over the locking of main gate leading to the Patiala-Rajpura road during night hours from 10 pm to 5 am, a few residents of Urban Estate Phase-III have filed a complaint with the Patiala Deputy Commissioner, who is also the Chief Administrator of PDA, demanding the opening of gates.

No animals at cattle pond

Stray animals have been becoming the cause of accidents at Dera Bassi town and other adjoining areas. The animals can be seen moving on roads and streets. The Municipal Council, Dera Bassi, had constructed a Cattle Pond to protect the stray animals. But the pond was now lying in a neglected state and was proving a white elephant. Residents of the city demanded that the cattle pond should be properly maintained so that accidents could be avoided by saving stray animals in this pond. Few days ago, a stray bull fell on the car of a local resident, and damaged his car.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has set a four-month deadline for the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and other authorities to consider the regularisation claim of 1984 anti-Sikh riots' victims who are currently in unauthorised occupation of residential flats.

Six thefts reported
Chandigarh, August 10
As many as six cases of theft have been reported across the city in the last 24 hours. Sonia Sethi, a resident of Sector 16, Panchkula, reported that her bag containing Rs 1000, driving licence and other documents, were stolen from her car (number PB-02-AD-8000) while it was parked in front of ISKCON temple, Sector-36.

Firm dupes five of Rs 7.5 lakh
Chandigarh, August 10 The police has booked the owners of a Sector 22-based recruitment firm for allegedly duping at least five persons of Rs 1.5 lakh each on the pretext of providing them jobs.

Three robbed of cash, mobile phones at gunpoint in P’kula
Panchkula, August 10
In yet another robbery in Panchkula, Rs 48,000 and mobile phones were looted at gunpoint from three persons early this morning. Four youngsters, who were posing as government officials deputed for a checking drive near tank chowk, Panchkula, stopped the victims and robbed them of the cash and mobile phones after threatening them with a gun.
