Employees take to streets against quota in promotions
Dehradun, July 27 The employees condemned the government for causing unnecessary delay in the implementation of the High Court order and said the persons who were already entitled reservation in jobs should not seek the extension of the benefit to promotions as well. "Our neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh has already decided to follow the directives of the court, the Uttarakhand Government should also follow suit in the interest of the state," said Prahlad Singh, president of the Rajya Karamchari Sanyukt Parishad. He also criticised the pressure tactics being employed by certain elected MLAs on the government to ensure quota in promotions was followed. The rally got a wide support from different employee unions which had on July 18 decided to form the Uttarakhand Adhikari Karamchari Shikshak Sangharsh Morcha. "Several employee unions, including the Uttarakhand Parvartiya Karamchari Shikashak Sangh, the Uttarakhand Federation of Ministerial Services Association, the Rajsya Karamchari Sanyukt Parishsad, the Rajkiya Vahan Chalak Mahasangh, the Class Fourth Employees Federation, the Nigam Karamchari Mahasangh, the Diploma Engineers Federation, the Secretariat Employees Union and the Uttarakhand Engineering Drawing Association," said Sunil Datt Kothari, member coordinator of the morcha. Members of the Provincial Medical Health Services (PMHS) and the Diploma Pharmacist Association also participated in the rally. Both unions had lent support to the rally in advance. Similar rallies were held at all district headquarters as the employees supporting the high court ruling had gone on mass casual leave today and only emergency services were functional in the hospitals. On the other hand, there was thin attendance at the offices due to the rally. |
Govt offices, schools shut in Pithoragarh
Pithoragarh, July 27 "The employees, later handed over a memorandum to the District Magistrate, to be sent to the state government," said Nandan Singh Kanyal, an organiser of the protest. "The high court has at least sensed the injustice being done to the non-reserved category in government job. It knows the fact that the employees of the reserved category have already got a big chunk of government jobs from meritorious candidates under the reservation," said Nandan Singh. The protest in the district has resulted into the closure of all government offices and schools in the district headquarters today, as all employees, teachers and even some officers remained absent from their routine work. The protesting employees said if the state government applied the reservation quota on promotions to appease the employees of the reserved category even after the high court judgment, it would be a fit case for contempt of court. "By stalling the promotions after the court judgment, the state government has shown the trend towards defying the court orders," said Dinesh Gururani, president of the Joint Trade Union Federation of state government employees. On the other side, state government employees under the banner of the Democratic Republic Employees Federation, an employee wing of Republic People's Front, have demanded that the government should adhere to its own policy and give promotions to reserved category employees as usual. "The ban on the promotions by the state government will mean injustice to reserved category employees. The federation will launch a agitation if the quota will not be maintained on promotions", said Jung Bahadur Tamta, state secretary of the RPF. |
