BJP executive meeting begins in Haridwar today
Dehradun, July 23 Since the announcement of the state Assembly election results early this year, the BJP leaders have not carried an evaluation of the election results, mainly because of the razor-thin margin of victory. Even the case of rampant indiscipline in which charges and counter-charges were levelled by two top leaders was dealt in an off-hand manner, with the party expelling former MLA from Kotdwar. Thereafter, the BJP not only lost the Sitarganj MLA to the Congress but had to mount a defensive operation to bring around another BJP MLA, who was ready to desert the party. “Though the Assembly election results had managed to salvage the party, the incidents of desertion and the Sitargangj loss did demoralise the party that was hoping to take advantage from the infighting taking place in the Congress. Now the Tehri byelection would be announced shortly. We are keen to post victory in the Tehri parliamentary constituency. Beside, the issues of indiscipline and the results of 2012 Assembly elections, too, would be examined. The selection of candidate for Tehri would prominently figure at the meet ,” said BS Chufal, Uttarakhand BJP chief. As the the tenure of the Uttarakhand BJP chief Chuphal would come to an end in September, the party would also have to decide on the suitable candidate for the post. “As the post of the Leader of the Opposition has already gone to Ajay Bhatt, who hails from Kumaon, the selection of the leader would invariably be from Garhwal. This would help us keep in check the regional aspirations of the party,” said Mukesh Mahindra, BJP spokesperson. Among the top Central leaders who would be attending the meeting are Ram Lal, general secretary (All- India) of the BJP, and Thawar Chand Gehlot, in-charge, Uttarakhand state. |
Moderate rainfall in Uttarakhand
Dehradun, July 23 According to Dr Anand Sharma, Director, Meteorological Department, 71 mm of rain was recorded at Lansdown in Pauri Garhwal while Munsiyari in Pithoragarh district received 51 mm of rain. Nainital also received 28.8 mm of rain this morning. The rainfall in the hills would benefit crops which had started withering due to deficient rainfall in the past one-and-a-half month. Almost the entire agriculture in the hills depends on monsoon. However, the plain districts of Uttarakhand, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar, continue to witness drought-like situation with deficient rain. Dr Anand Sharma said there had been a deficiency of 82 per cent of rain in Udham Singh Nagar district since June 1 while the deficiency in Haridwar was 64 per cent and in Tehri 74 per cent. Even today while the hill got light to moderate rain, there was no rain in Haridwar and only 2.9 mm rain recorded at Pant Nagar. Both these plain districts are known as the granary of the state. |

Students visit NASA's Kennedy Space Centre
Dehradun, July 23 At the NASA's Kennedy Space Centre they designed and developed balloon payload for recording weather data and successfully launched it from Kelly Park on June 29. As it reached a height of above 70,000 ft, students recorded the signals and information. One of the most amazing experience was to witness the launch of a space rocket, while at Kelly Park. They had various fun-filled competitions on designing of robots, rocket making and launching from Coke bottles as well as programming the micro controllers. The students did a wonderful job in these activities. They were taken on a tour of the Kennedy Space Centre to see the launch pad, the massive building where rockets are constructed and stored, the shuttle launch and the museum. The astronaut encounter gave them an opportunity to interact, hear and get clicked with the space shuttle astronaut Bob Cenker. At the end of the five-day programme at the Kennedy Space Centre, there was the graduation ceremony and students received certificates from the director of the programme, L Chew, and Jaydeep Mukherjee, director, Centre for Space Education of Space Grant Consortium. The programme gave them the opportunity to see some of the world's most sort out tourist destinations such as the Sea World, Disney Land, Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios located in Florida. At New York they visited the world-renowned Madam Tussauds Museum, viewed New York by night from the 86th floor of 102-storey Empire State Building, shopped at the dazzling Times Square, went on a cruise to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Islands to see for themselves the 305-ft-high eighth marvel of the world. The programme also gave the students an opportunity to interact with students of Lahore Grammar School from Lahore, Pakistan, which helped them to change their views about society in the neighbouring country. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, which helped the students to grow wiser and wealthier in experience of life, according to the school authorities. |
Women Welfare Dept fails to be independent entity
Dehradun, July 23 Moreover, no Director has been appointed to look after the affairs of Women Welfare Department. The additional commissioner of Kumaon has been given the additional charge of the Director of the Women Welfare Department. In December 2011, the then BJP government had officially split the Social Welfare Department so that a separate department could be setup for execution, implementation of welfare schemes for women and to run institutions for the welfare of women and children. But such has been the hold of the Social Welfare Department that a separate Directorate has failed to take shape and 50 per cent of the posts are vacant with programme officials from Social Welfare Department being given additional charges. “The response of the government has demoralised the staff, who were hoping for promotions and independent entity. The government order has been drafted in such a manner that there is confusion galore as the controlling authority will continue to be Director of social welfare. Such half-hearted attempts at creating the department will do no good to the state,” said a senior official. Besides, the posts of Probation Officers in six districts are vacant and only two posts of Superintendent in Bageshwar and Dehradun districts are occupied. Since 2000, the exercise of filling the post of district probation officers either through promotion or the State Public Service Commission has not taken place. Promotions of Superintendents to the post of Probation Officers have also not taken place. According to a government order, 14 posts have been sanctioned for the department and the total posts in all districts are 339. Once the state was created, it was felt that the Uttarakhand government would carry forward the arrangement existing in Uttar Pradesh regarding the creation of separate department of Women and Child Welfare but that was not to be. “Instead of creating a separate department of Women and Child Welfare and then creating two separate Directorates of Child Welfare and Women Welfare, a separate Directorate of Integrated Child Development Schemes (ICDS) was created, which is a campaign and relegated the Women Welfare Department under the Social Welfare Department. Since then the department has failed to come on its own and the December 2011 order has again gone against the Women Welfare Department,” said a senior official. |
Dearth of funds prevents karate kid Pooja from taking part in Malaysian event
Mussoorie, July 23 Pooja Rawat, brimming with confidence, is of the view that her preparations are complete, and if opportunity is provided, she would definitely return with a medal, bringing laurels to the state and the country. Pooja has won several awards and medals for her state at the district-level competitions held in Rishikesh and Haridwar. She also won the gold medal in the nationals twice in Delhi and Mussoorie, respectively, in the last two years. She won the coveted gold medal for the state in the Independence Cup held at Delhi in 2011. Sanjeev Kumar Jangda, a reputed coach from Dehradun, is training this brilliant sportsperson presently. Pooja Rawat was born on March 10, 1996, in a family that is barely able to make both ends meet. Pooja’s father Dhirendar Rawat is a street vendor selling boiled eggs on a stall on The Mall Road to earn bread and butter for his family. Pooja Rawat gives credit for her success to the love and affection shown by her family and the efforts made by them to keep urging her on to blossom as a top sportsperson despite financial difficulties. Pooja also does not forget the support provided by RB Singh, Head Master of the Central School for Tibetans in Mussoorie, and motivating her to do her best in the sport that requires extreme physical and mental exertion. She is presently studying in Class XII in Summer Valley School. Dhirendar Rawat, speaking highly of his daughter, says that he has been able assist his daughter to pursue her interest in sports until now. However, lately, Dhirendar Rawat is finding it difficult to support his daughter financially due to the meagre income he earns by selling boiled eggs. “It is indeed a proud moment for the family that Pooja is scheduled to leave for international competition in Malaysia this August, but due to paucity of funds, I am finding it difficult to send her for the competition, as a lot of money is required for such tours,” added Dhirendar Rawat. The Rawat family approached several public representatives for the necessary financial aid so that she can join the team and bring laurels to the state and the town in Malaysia, but no one has lent a helping hand as yet, leaving a big question mark on her participating in the event for which she has toiled so hard over the years. “My daughter and the family have undergone a tumultuous pain to reach here, and if Pooja is unable to join the team at Malaysia, her life-long dream to participate in the international championship will be shattered, leaving them a dejected lot,” said Dhirendar Rawat. When contacted, the MC president, OP Uniyal, said that the family had approached him for financial aid and he had assured that he would contribute some amount at his personal level. |
