Amritsar, July 26
The police on Thursday arrested Jagtaar Singh alias Sonu, a resident of Kot Baba Deep Singh, Sultanwind, for allegedly posing as a police officer and duping pilgrims and young couples around the Golden Temple.

Even without a police uniform the accused, allegedly in connivance with his accomplice Raja and his family members, posed as a cop. The police has also seized 500 gm charas, a .12-bore country-made pistol, two live cartridges and six mobile handsets from his possession.

According to police commissioner RP Mittal, the accused targeted pilgrims or young couples strolling near the Golden Temple or at Jallianwala Bagh. To keep their identity under cover, young couples do not approach the police, he said.

“It is astonishing that he convinced his targets about him being a policeman with his fake mannerisms. The accused admitted to have committed at least 50 such crimes wherein he had snatched the belongings of his victims on the pretext of depositing them with the police. As the victims who came from outside did not want to get involved in police proceedings, they became easy targets. We could not arrest him in the absence of any complainant," Mittal said.

The police is on the lookout for his accomplice Raja, his father and brother-in-law who helped him dispose of the articles the accused robbed the tourists of.

The police station C division has registered cases against the accused.

Mittal has appealed to the general public that if anyone encounters such incident, he or she must bring it to the notice of the police. “We assure to keep the name and address of the victim secret,” he added.

Amritsar, July 26
Hearts are beating faster as the biggest sporting extravaganza is about to begin, London Olympics 2012. Sports enthusiasts are not behind in supporting the Indian contingent and are out on the streets dancing to the beat of the dhol to wish our players the very best for the Olympics.

The fact that a majority of the members of the Indian contingent are from Punjab makes it even better. Fans are taking part and organising events to boost the morale of the players.

With the 'Chak de India' campaign, sports lovers here are sending best wishes to the Indian athletes, especially the Indian hockey team.

"Olympics are a big deal and hockey is the most prestigious sport of the country. India was known as a hockey powerhouse in the world but our performance is nowhere near that glory. However, the way our team has played in the Olympics qualifier against France, I am confident that this time we will definitely do something great," said Professor Paramjit Singh Randhawa, who is a sports writer and teaches Punjabi at DAV College, Amritsar.

More such sports lovers gathered at the Hall Gate and signed in good wishes for the Indian team. "We have got good players in Sardara Singh, Sandeep Singh, Tushar Khandekar and all," said Gurdas Singh Sekhon, a lecturer, who is confident because of the team's form. He hopes that the team would bring home the gold medal in hockey.

"The superb form in which the Indian hockey team is and with sportspersons like Jwala Gutta, Vijender Singh, Saina Nehwal, Abhinav Bindra and senior players like Leander Paes, India is hopeful in most categories of the competition," he added.

The Indian contingent includes 81 athletes who will take part in 13 sports disciplines. Another morale booster has come from Punjab government’s announcement of Rs 2 crore cash prize for each gold medal won at the Olympics.

Cashing on the euphoria, city hotels and restaurants are too joining in the celebrations. “We have created an Olympics theme with huge Olympics logo in the main porch leading to the dining area of our hotel where we have placed sports gear as props and décor. Sports emoticons resembling that of Olympics have also been used in the ambiance," says Rajiv Sharma, the general manager of a local hotel.

There is a surprise menu as well with some of delicacies named after famous and likely medal winners from the Indian contingent. While you dig into chicken tacos named after Abhinav Bindra or Sania Nehwal, you are not just gorging on food but extending your support to India's Olympics hopes.

No action has been taken on the complaint filed with the police over dumping of toxic ash in a drain near Jagdev Kalan village, NGO Mission Agaaz has alleged. In a letter to the Chief Parliamentary Secretary, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the NGO has alleged that the drainage department was trying to push the matter under the carpet.

Mission Aagaaz secretary Gurbhej Singh said the administration was lax in nailing those responsible for dumping the ash.

In a communiqué he refuted the statement of the Drainage Circle official that his team had found two trolleys of fly ash dumped in the drain and nearby area. He claimed that as per the statements of the villagers dumping of fly ash continued for five days and the fly ash was brought in many trolleys.

The NGO has demanded a thorough inquiry to nail the violators and laboratory test of the ash to know the source of the industrial units from where it is being produced.

Sugar traders here went on a five-day strike to lodge their protest against the state government move to levy five per cent VAT on sugar. Wholesale Sugar Dealers Association president Brij Mohan Arora said such high VAT was not charged on sugar anywhere else in the country.

He said it would lead to further increase in the sugar prices. He said it would encourage the tax mafia to procure sugar from outside the state. They would thus escape the tax which would lead to losses to the state exchequer.

Arora said the state consumed 60,000 tonnes of sugar, including 4,000 tonnes in the district. He said for 70 per cent of the stocks they were dependent on Haryana, UP and Maharashtra.
