Jittery CITCO shifts jetties at Sukhna

Recruitment of 10 ASIs cancelled
Chandigarh, June 4
The police today cancelled the recruitment of 10 assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) who were selected following a police recruitment test in 2007. None of these candidates had joined duty as the recruitment had been stayed following discrepancies in the selection process.

Keen to paddle with Panjab University Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti at 5 am tomorrow to celebrate the Environment Day, university officials and teachers had a tough time arranging bicycles and putting them in working order. Panjab University registrar on behalf of the VC has appealed to all faculty members, officials and affiliated colleges to ride cycles tomorrow, at least in the morning, to celebrate the day.

Youth dies in accident
Chandigarh, June 4
A 22-year-old youth died after his motorcycle skidded near the Iron market roundabout in Sector 29 today evening. The victim, Pradeep, was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 where he was declared brought dead.

A 45-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in forest area near Khuda Jassu village today.

‘Add buses to CTU fleet’
Pawan Kumar Bansal, local MP and Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources has taken up with the Chandigarh Administration the need to add at least 50 modern and fuel efficient buses to the CTU fleet. In a letter to the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Bansal has said that though Chandigarh has a local transport system which is better than many of the important cities of the country, yet there is a definite need to strengthen, augment and expand the same. Bansal further said that with the expansion of the city and the increase in population over the years, direct and frequent bus service to and from important places in the city like the High Court, the Civil Secretariat, bus stand, district courts, general hospital (Sector 16 and Sector 32), railway station, airport etc will be of immense benefit to the public and would be widely welcomed.

PU budget sanction delayed

With the Chancellor office having failed to make any headway in re-initiating the selection process of the next PU VC, Panjab University has come to a standstill. The uncertainty over the next VC and propriety conflicts have taken a toll on the academic, administrative, recruitment and financial matters. The annual budget is the latest to be hit.

In what may be termed as an unprecedented move, probably for the first time, some senior politician from outside the state was spotted campaigning for the SAD candidate contesting civic election. It was Abhay Chautala, INLD MLA and son of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala, who campaigned for the SAD candidate from municipal ward number 31, Harpal Juneja.

Pollution board takes smoke samples from liquor factory
Banur, June 4
A team of Punjab Pollution Control Board visited Chandigarh distillers and bottles limited, Banur, and took samples of air smoke to check the quantity of ash in the smoke coming out from the chimneys of the factory. Chimneys were set up on the cogeneration power plant of company in which rice husk was used. The pollution control board team led by the SDO Gursarn Dass Garg had taken samples from the smoke. Notably, residents of nearby villages had been continually complaining of ash problem from the chimneys of company. They had been complaining that ash from the factory was causing eye ailments and it also gathers in the houses.

11 booked for beating panchayat member

The Dera Bassi police has booked 11 persons including some women for beating up a Panchayat member of Trivedi village camp.

Drug peddler arrested

In a special drive against drugs, the Mohali police today nabbed a drug peddler and recovered four kg poppy husk, 7000 ml liquid drugs and 30 bottles of country-made liquor.

14 BBSBEC students selected for govt camp
Fatehgarh Sahib, June 4
14 students from Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, have been selected by Government of India to attend the first Rajiv Gandhi Youth Leadership Internship Programme to be held at the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development. The government has selected 67 students from all over the country and out of these 19 students are from Punjab. These include three students from SUS Tangori and one each from Swami Parmanand College and Rayat College, said Dr M S Grewal, Principal of the College.

Capital punishment sought for Neki, Brandy

During the course of final arguments on quantum of sentence for Sukhwinder Singh’s murder convicts — Neki Nalwa, wife of the deceased, and her paramour Himmat Singh, alias Brandy, public prosecutor Vijay Singla today demanded capital punishment for the duo, terming the crime as ‘rarest of rare’ in nature.

Tata Motors penalised Rs 50,000

The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission while upholding the decision of the district forum-1 has increased the fine from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 on Tata Motors for its failure to rectify the fault in a newly purchased vehicle of a Mohali resident.

The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate has summoned the two accused, who had allegedly misappropriated Rs 90 lakh paid by a city resident to purchase a showroom in a Mall, Paras Downtown, at Zirakpur. The seller had allegedly gone back on his word to sell a property after steep appreciation in the prices.

4 judges to be appointed
Mohali, June 4
Four more judges will be appointed in the District Courts Complex, Mohali very soon. According to sources, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has accepted the proposal of increase the strength of the local district court and has directed to construct at least two new courts by June 21 for the new judges.

Woman, child run over by car, injured critically

A woman and her eight-month-old infant were critically injured after being run over by a speeding Honda city car near the Sector 25 and 38 lights here this evening. The woman, who is a labourer, was sleeping by the roadside with her child during the incident.
