Faridkot, May 25
In the backdrop of confidence-building measures between India and Pakistan, when the Home Secretaries of the two countries are set to ink liberal visa rules to increase people-to-people contact, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) and senior Akali leaders are sensing the prospect of developing Faridkot as a medical tourism destination, especially for treatment of cancer.

It is not only in the Malwa region of Punjab that cancer is highly prevalent but in Pakistan, too. There, the rate of cancer is highest in Asia due to which every year, 40,000 women die only of breast cancer, said Dr SS Gill, vice-chancellor, BFUHS, Faridkot.

The state and the central governments are already in the process of establishing a super-speciality cancer hospital, by investing over Rs 150 crore in Faridkot.

Rs 45 crore has already been spent and the hospital has the potential to attract medical tourists, particularly cancer patients from Pakistan, said the VC.

As the cost of treatment in the developed countries like the US and the UK is ballooning, the comparatively low-priced healthcare in Faridkot offers a big incentive to the Pakistanis.

But to develop medical tourism for the benefit of people of both the countries, the Hussainiwala border in Ferozepur needs to be opened to reduce the distance, said Deep Malhotra, the Akali MLA from Faridkot. Reaching Faridkot for a patient from Pakistan is a cumbersome and tedious process at present, he said.

"For this purpose, the Ferozepur and Faridkot MPs will take up the matter with the Prime Minister and also urge the Punjab government to raise the matter with the central government," said Faridkot MP Paramjit Kaur Gulshan.

The cost of treatment at the Faridkot hospital would be nearly a tenth of the price of comparable treatment of cancer in the developed countries.

Environment, culture and the lifestyle of the East and West are different due to which methods of cure can also differ. But in case of Pakistan and India, there is no such problem and more over, they will also get a chance to visit and pay obeisance at the dargah and temple of the great sufi saint Sheikh Baba Farid," said Deep Malhotra, the local MLA.

About medical tourism, Dr SS Gill, VC, BFUHS, said this is a fast growing sector in India and an estimated 1.5 lakh foreigners travel to India for low-priced healthcare every year.

Besides earning foreign revenue, medical tourism would help in upgrading the cancer hospital in Faridkot with the availability of the latest medical technology and a growing compliance with international quality standards. "Cancer hospital in Faridkot is already getting patients from all over India," said the VC.

Muktsar, May 25
Local Congress MLA Karan Kaur Brar today met Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal at his residence in Badal village seeking action against those Akali leaders who had yesterday allegedly torn the nomination papers of two people of Bariwala town.

Karan Kaur Brar said Jagjeet Singh and Nanak Singh, who could not file their nominations for the Nagar Panchayat elections in Bariwala yesterday had also gone to meet Sukhbir today, but could not meet him, as they were not allowed inside.

“Even I, after a long wait of four hours, was allowed to go inside to meet Sukhbir. I told him what kind of cheap politics the Akalis were indulging in the Muktsar assembly constituency. I narrated the yesterday’s entire episode and Sukhbir assured me that he would take action against those whose names figure, including Jaspal Singh Marar, son of Sukhdarshan Singh Marar,” said Karan Kaur Brar, while speaking over the phone.

“This is not the first incident when the Akalis have played such politics. Earlier, they not only harassed the Congress workers but even registered criminal cases against them. At that time, I raised my voice in the Assembly and now, I will move an application before the Election Commission seeking a fresh date of election for ward number 3 of Bariwala Nagar Panchayat," added Brar.

She also claimed that Sukhbir criticised the step taken by the Akalis yesterday.

Differences between SAD, BJP leaders surface
Praful Chander Nagpal

Fazilka, May 25
Differences between local BJP and SAD leaders came to fore as some of the members of local Panchayat Samiti revolted against the chairman of the Samiti, Ranjit Singh Dhaliwal.

As per sources, half a dozen members of the Panchayat Samiti, Fazilka, through a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, Fazilka, have asked him to call a meeting of the general house as they want to table a no-confidence motion against the chairman. There are 25 members of the Samiti of which one had passed away.

Notably, a two-thirds majority, comprising 17 members, can remove the chairman. As per the norms, one-fifth of the members can move a no-confidence motion.

It is learnt that on the basis of the demand of the members, the office of the Deputy Commissioner has fixed a meeting of the general house on June 1.

As per sources, Fazilka ADC Darshan Singh Grewal would preside over the meeting.

There is an old tussle between the Ranjit Singh Dhaliwal group that is supported by SAD and the local BJP MLA Surjit Kumar Jyani's camp over the dominance of the local Block Samiti. Earlier too, efforts were made to remove Dhaliwal.

The Dhaliwal group says the move to remove him has been initiated at the behest of Jyani. On the other hand, the Jyani group is alleging that Dhaliwal and his followers had opposed Jyani in the previous Fazilka assembly elections.

"I have sufficient numbers," said a confident Dhaliwal, adding that Paramjit Singh Sindhwan, OSD to Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who contested the assembly election from adjacent Jalalabad constituency had deputed him in 25 villages of the Jalalabad assembly constituency for campaigning. Hence, there was no question of opposing Jyani, he said.

However, Jyani has denied his involvement in the campaign to remove the chairman.

The political leaders have reportedly started mounting pressure on Samiti members, whose presence is otherwise seldom a cause for worry by the senior leaders.

The political observers are waiting for the outcome of the result on June 1.
