TRASH TROUBLE PILES UP

Sakshi, a Sector 44 resident here, has no option but to dispose of her domestic refuse on her own at the nearby over-flowing garbage bin in her locality. For the past two days, she has been following the same practice, as no employee of door-to-door garbage collection association has turned up at her place to collect the garbage.

Police steps up drive to remove black films
Chandigarh, May 5
Continuing the intensive challaning drive against the vehicles with black films, the Chandigarh Police challaned around 200 violators across the city today. To comply with the Supreme Court order in this regard, a large number of vehicle owners were seen at motor markets getting the films removed from the glasses.

Two cars set on fire
Panchkula, May 5
Two cars were set on fire by an unidentified person in front of a house in Sector 7 in the wee hours this morning. Ninin Modi, a businessman, got terrified when he saw his cars, an Ambassador and a Skoda, ablaze. He immediately woke up his neighbours who helped him in controlling the fire within 10 minutes.

City u-15 lads win coveted football cup
Chandigarh, May 5
Players of the Chandigarh Football Academy brought laurels to the city by winning the Manchester United Premier Football Cup for boys (U-15) in Jharkhand today. The local lads won the title after four years and have qualified for the Asia zone competition to be held in Indonesia from May 27.

UT, Punjab hold talks on development
Chandigarh, May 5
Punjab has once again raised the sensitive issue of the Chandigarh Administration disturbing the 60:40 ratio in staffing the UT. The issue was raised by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal during a high-level meeting chaired by the UT Administrator and Punjab Governor, Shivraj V Pati, to discuss certain issues pertaining to the development of the UT and neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.

De-silting of Sukhna begins
Chandigarh, May 5
Once again, the UT engineering department has started removing silt from the Sukhna Lake bed. The move follows the decision of the Chandigarh Administration to de-silt the lake by removing the silt, as the manual clearing of weeds was not solving the problem of Sukhna drying up.

Councillor for need-based changes in CHB houses
Chandigarh, May 5
Davesh Moudgil, BJP councillor from Ward No. 22 has urged the Chandigarh Administration to regularise the need-based changes in houses allotted by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) in various parts of the city and transfer the ownership to the GPA holders.

Headmaster Rattan Singh, a Punjabi writer and a philanthropist, donated his body to the PGI here yesterday. The department of anatomy, PGIMER, Chandigarh, feels proud to receive the body of “soldier of humanity”, said Dr Daisy Sahni, professor and head, department of anatomy.

Residents irked over leaking pipeline

Residents of Sector 45-A are at the receiving end, thanks to the indifferent attitude of the municipal corporation (MC). A leaking water supply line in front of house no 516, 45-A, has resulted in a large cess of water that is threatening to enter the houses.

Army Chief visits Western Command
Chandigarh, May 5
About three weeks before he is scheduled to hang up his boots, the Chief of the Army Staff, Gen VK Singh, arrived at the Western Command Headquarters, Chandi Mandir, on a daylong official visit today. He was accompanied by his wife Bharti Singh.

Women’s rights workshop

The Chandigarh Social Welfare Board commenced with a two-day workshop on ‘Rights of Women for Higher Economic Opportunities’ today at Panjab University, with its speakers and participants deliberating the strategies on the economic freedom and empowerment of the women highlighting the need for their inclusion in the financial decisions of the family.

Education dept fails to reply to PIL

Even though the DPI (schools) and the DEO, Chandigarh, claim to be taking strict action for implementation of the Right to education Act (RTE), the department of education today failed to file reply to a Public Interest Litigation filed in the District Courts here against the education secretary.

25 lawyers, 7 MC employees booked

The Mohali police has registered two separate cases against about 25 lawyers of the Mohali District Court and seven employees of Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) at the Mataur police station here today. Both parties had been involved in a brawl yesterday.

Three booked in snatching case

Sandeep Singh, a resident of the Industrial Area, Phase I, alleged that three motorcycle-borne youngsters snatched his mobile phone near the church slip road, Hallo Majra, on Friday. The victim managed to note down the registration number of the vehicle.
