Panchkula, May 5
The non-coordination between the police and organisers of the marathon event came to fore as young athletes were made to run in the middle of the traffic risking their lives.

Even though a large number of the policemen were present at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Sector 3 this morning yet no arrangements were made to stop the vehicular traffic on the roads. More than 1,000 youngsters (in junior and senior category) from across the state participated in the marathon to mark the World Athletics Day.

While senior athletes covered a distance of 11 kms, the juniors ran for 5.5 kms to complete the marathon. OP Singh, director sports and youth affairs, Haryana flagged off the event.

Suresh Kapoor, father of a young participant said that he was surprised over the arrangements made by the organisers, as the traffic was not stopped on the roads. He said traffic should have been blocked till the participants took another road enroute the 11 km track.

Participants even complained that the organisers had failed to provide water after every kilometer. They said water was not provided during the 11 km race, which was against marathon norms.

Singh said that it was not possible to stop the vehicular traffic on the route, as there was vehicular traffic on the National Highway No 22. He said that the PCR vans were directed to ply along with the participants to ensure their security. Meanwhile, the senior players, who visited the stadium during the morning hours to practice at the venue had to face problems, as they were not allowed to take their vehicles inside the stadium. As the main gate of the Sports Complex was bedecked for the mega event senior players had to park their vehicles outside the stadium.
