249 fake ration cards cancelled: Officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department, Khatima, have cancelled 249 fake ration cards that they had stumbled up on during a verification drive being carried out in the area. Officials said almost 70 per cent of the verification of ration cards had been completed. The drive has been initiated following complaints that in certain areas the ration cards exceed the number of residents. Of the ration cards that have been cancelled, 240 were of the APL category, seven of the BPL category and two were Antyodaya cards.Woman dies in mishap:
A woman was killed while two others were injured when their motorcycle was hit by an overloaded tractor-trailer on the Kaladhungi-Bazpur road in Haldwani on Friday. Shanti Devi (35), a resident of Gandhinagar in Bazpur, along with her son Arvind and daughter Rajani, was returning home after participating in a marriage party when the accident took place. Shanti Devi died on the spot while her children sustained injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer fled. Vehicle falls into gorge, child killed:
A three-year-old child was killed while 13 others were injured when the four-wheeler they were travelling in fell into a gorge near Kalna bend in Bageshwar on Friday. They were on their way to Pant Kwairali from Kanda. The deceased has been identified as Priyanshu, a resident of Okhalsaun village. The injured were taken to a government hospital. Drive to check sale of illegal liquor:
The Bageshwar administration and the police have launched a drive to check the sale of illegal liquor. Over the past two days, teams of officials have been carrying out a series of raids at eating joints in the town. The raids follow a series of complaints made by local residents that liquor was being sold freely at eating joints, making it impossible for women and children to go there. The areas where raids have been carried out include the bus station, Durg Bazar, Bharadi and the Kanda road. (Compiled by Rajeev
