: Gurmat sangeet maestro, Prof Kartar Singh, has been conferred with Tagore Akademi Ratna by the Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution in the field of music. The award, which is equivalent to the Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship, was given by Governor of West Bengal MK Narayanan today at the Rabindra Sadan in Kolkata.

Job fair at SIDCUL cancelled: District Employment Officer, Udham Singh Nagar, YS Rawat has said that the job fair that was scheduled to be organised in the State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttaranchal.(SIDCUL) hub in Sitarganj on April 30 has been cancelled. The decision has been cancelled following the model code of conduct coming into effect after the schedule for the Panchayat poll was announced on Tuesday. He said the next date for the fair would be announced later.

New Excise Policy welcomed: The new Excise Policy announced by the state government with regard to the granting of bar licence and the timings of liquor vends has been welcomed by those associated with the tourism industry. A senior functionary of the North India Hotel and Restaurant Association Praveen Sharma said the policy would go a long way in promoting tourism and related activities in the state. He thanked Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and his Cabinet colleagues, Indira Hridyesh and Dinesh Aggarwal, for the initiative taken by them.

14-year-old girl ends life: A 14-year-old girl, a resident of Kashipur, committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on Monday night. She has been identified as Pinki. The reason behind the extreme step is yet to be ascertained. She was taken to a hospital in a serious condition where she died while being treated.

Ruckus by kin at hospital: Yet another incident of kin of a patient creating a ruckus at a government hospital has come to light in Rudrapur. After the death of four-year-old Neetu, a resident of the Transit Camp area, due to diarrhoea on Tuesday, her relatives created a ruckus at the hospital accusing doctors of negligence. The matter was resolved only after the police intervened and the hospital authorities announced to get the incident probed by a three-member committee.

Two held for snatching: The revenue police in Nainital has arrested two persons for allegedly snatching the mangalsutra of a woman in the remote Dhari area on April 20. The incident had taken place near Champfi and Padampuri. The accused have been identified as Gaurav Bisht and Raju, alias Rajendra Singh. According to SDM CS Imlal, a gold portion of the mangalsutra has been recovered from the accused while they claim to have sold the remaining in Haldwani. A team has been sent to carry out investigations in Haldwani.
