Track of titles
Many telly serials are keeping their titles after famous Bollywood songs. We find out why...

A still from Bade Acche Lagte Hain
mutual feeling: A still from Bade Acche Lagte Hain

What make good ol' Hindi songs popular with all generations? The soulful melodies, meaningful lyrics and perfect beats to go with the flow! One loves to hum these melodies and now they are even used as titles for many telly serials. Right from Sony's Bade Acche Lagte Hain, whose title track is sung by Shreya Ghoshal and is originally from the movie Balika Vadhu, to Dekha Ek Khwaab, from the romantic hit Silsila, Kuch Toh Log Kahenge from Amar Prem and Kya Hua Tera Vaada from Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin, the trend is getting more and more popular.

And that was just the tip of the iceberg. Colors' serial Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha is from the movie Baton Baton Mein and the recently launched channel Life OK's serial Tum Dena Saath Mera has the following line of Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaye from Jurm.

The bug has been caught by all the channels. Star Plus' serial Iss Pyar Ko Main Kya Naam Doon has its title from Tushar Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor starrer Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai and Ek Hazaaron Main Meri Behena Hai is from the famous movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna's' song Phoolon Ka Taron Ka.

The bond between Bollywood and the small screen is growing stronger via musical route. If a serial is using a particular song's title, it is even playing the track in the background either with the same lyrics or some improvised ones. Some of them are not even using the exact song but still have title similarities.

Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behena Hai
Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behena Hai

So why the sudden dependency on Bollywood tunes? "Recently even our production house has changed the name of Sahara One's Neem Neem Shahed to Tujh Sang Preet Lagai Sajna from yesteryear's film Kaamchor starring Rakesh Roshan, Jayapradha and Tanuja," says Dheeraj Kumar, a television producer.

Keeping such a title which has immediate connectivity and a good recall value definitely garners good TRP. "The older generations and even the present one recognise famous songs and giving titles of Bollywood songs to serials is a positive and a fresh move wherein the small screen pays a tribute to Bollywood," adds Kumar.

Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga is yet another serial of Sahara One which has its title identical to a song from the movie Jeevan Mrityu starring Dharmendra and Rakhee. Says Kavita Bharjatya, television director, "In this situation there is a lot of familiarity and rapport from the audiences' side. But I feel that if one is deciding on such kind of titles, these should suit the story and should not be randomly picked up."

For Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga, Kavita did not have to think much as it was Rajshree Production's song and a tribute to her grandfather. She agrees that the song is apt for the lead couple in the serial. As for Maqbool Khan, another television and film director, there is no lack of creativity in the televison industry but it's just that these titles are easy to think of.

"The television people are very creative and that's the reason that they give out so many different serials, but songs from old movies are much more noticeable."

So, the next time another serial is named after a song we know what thought process behind it is.

An ode to the past...
Mona

Parwaz Our rich cultural heritage is fast becoming part of academics. Though we often complain of it being neglected in the name of 'globalisation', it is heartening to see educated youth taking it forward.

Parwaz, a Sufi and folk artiste, is one of the few singers who want to resurrect the old glory of Punjab. Soulful, meaningful lyrics that give due importance to the tradition and fast fading values in life is Parwaz's USP.

Influenced by Mohammad Rafi, Parwaz took up vocal music in his Masters. One decade hence, he has been giving stage performances. And, all his songs come from his own pen. Sufi, village life, values and of course love are the subjects he writes and sings on. "There is an audience for each type of music. What I aspire to do is to put Punjab onto the old, right track again," says Parwaz, in Chandigarh on Monday for a performance. The singer, who has given songs like Saiyan ve sayiyan and Asi kacchi aklan vale haan, is drawn towards Sufi for he considers the whole world is the creation of the Almighty and it's He who runs the world. Do people in this mad, materialistic life connect to God still? "Well, whatever is happening is His doing. Some acknowledge their connection with Him, others don't, but, this is one essential bond in life," he says.

Doesn't he fear that he will lose the race if he doesn't follow the 'glamour' norms that music industry has set today? "It's all about creating the right ambience for the listeners to enjoy. If you are able to set it right, you will find a happy audience," says Parwaz who is diligently working on his upcoming album.

His message, "Write good, sing good and also listen to good music."

Made for men
Here are a few fashion trends that the men can check out this summer
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

From tip to toe, there are new fashion trends every new season. And this time we are talking about the fashion forecast for males. From woven details in shoes to safari jackets and wild floral motifs, it's the colour blocking that is the latest fad for the fashion-conscious male.

Hats off

Hats were a big fashion statement for women last year and this season, it's the turn of males. From printed caps to boater styles, even the straw hats are a classic hit this season. So, don't shy away from wearing one!

Make a statement

We have feminine prints like floral motifs on men shorts and even shirts. Pink is a hot colour for men and bright printed jackets made an impact at Prada fashion show. "It's not just designer names that have imprinted floral stuff for men, but overall we see a lot of floral prints on short-sleeved shirts and even tees for the spring/summer season," says designer Amit Kashyap.

Safari look

Bombers and cropped blazers have been hot, but this season is about the safari look. One essential for a male wardrobe is the safari jacket. Though the trend of safari jacket goes back to the 1970s, it was popularized by Yves Saint Laurent and its labels like Marc Jacobs and Joseph Abboud, who re-worked on this jacket. "Safari jackets are a big hit; from belted cotton safari jackets to the khakhis, it's the global explorer look that is big this season," says an employee at FCUK in Sector 17. Colour-wise, khaki, black and navy are the main shades to look out for, but Trussardi presented an orange version of a safari jacket in a fashion show. So, you have a choice here.

Wide-wide pants

Gentleman, it's the wide-legged pants for the spring/summer 2012. With brands like Issey Miyake and Kenzo showcasing the wide pant styles, there's hardly any doubt that this is the trend for the season. "That's not all, men can relax in striped pajama-style pants or the low-waist baggy pants," says Amit.

Foot work

Gone are the days when men would only wear brown and black shoes. Today we have a variety to choose from. And since it is summer, men need not sweat in closed footwear but choose from the variety of lace-up sandals in braided look and added laces for a smart aesthetic touch.

All pumped-up
Here’s a guide to what you must add to your shoe wardrobe
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

It’s that time of the year when you just can’t wait to stop wearing your warm-weather wardrobe and along with it unwrap your pretty feet from layers of wool. Well, it’s time to make your feet happy and try the trendy footwear for the spring/summer 2012. And first and the foremost footwear trend for the season is that we see a shift from rounded toes to pointed ones. Though it’s not a sweeping trend as rounded toes are still on shelves, but it is mostly in sandals and booties. Another hot style to look out for is the metallic toes.

Talking about the city market, from braided sandals to wedge heels and the ever-loved stilettos, we find everything stylish, but it’s the colourful footwear that attracts the attention. Making a colourful splash from sunshine yellow to emerald green, sparkling silver to orange, those who love to make accents with their bright shoes can step in as bright shades will rule despite the obvious rein of pastels this season.

“Silver is a hot colour in footwear this season so is red, green and purple,” says an employee of Steps at Paras Down Town Mall. Spelling trends he says, “From super mega platforms to transparent shoes, this season we see dramatic use of embellishments on shoes. Pearls are quite a rage, so is lace and ribbon.”

Well, if you like glittery stuff, shinning shoes is another trend to look out for. Silver and gold is the obvious choice on the runway, but you can try different colours to stand out of the crowd.

“Rivets will be a great hit during Spring/ Summer 2012 season. They come in all types of footwear: from high-heeled pumps to biker boots and they can be small and almost invisible or large and made to focus attention on them,” says footwear designer Swati Mehrotra. “Lacing still positions high in the world of fashion and we would be see lots of it on shoes and sandals but it’s no longer as trendy on boots,” she adds.

Stepping into heels wedges and espadrilles are still hot though they would be less colorful. Flats too remain to be the best sellers as women like to feel comfortable! So, unleash the shoe shopper in you and hit the market to buy that perfect pair for your feet.

The game of golf can be the most wonderful game if learnt correctly and can be torturous for those who get the fundamentals wrong. Learning any game is a mix of skill and technique. A skilled person has great eye-hand co-ordination or neutron-muscular response and therefore is able to pick up most motor skills quickly. There are many golfers who have learnt the game on their own and have used their motor skills in doing so. The ones who have combined their skills with good technique end up becoming good golfers. Most people with average motor skills need to be trained by a professional so that they learn the correct technique from the beginning and do not have to rely solely on skill.

There are three ways to learn – analytical, visual or kinesthetic. Analytical learning would be thought controlled actions which are good as a first step in understanding a motion but difficult to do while actually trying to hit a ball. Visual is seeing yourself in a mirror or video and comparing the positions with that of a good player. Kinesthetic learning is associated with feeling positions or a motion. Drills generally help in learning a motion kinesthetically.

If you are a beginner and do not have access to a golf coach go through the following steps —

Learn to grip the club correctly. Cut out a picture of a good grip from a magazine and paste it next to a mirror. In a good grip 2-3 knuckles of the left hand would be visible when viewed from in front and you could compare your grip with this in a mirror. The ‘v’ formed between the left thumb and the forefinger should point anywhere between the right collar bone and right shoulder (for right handed players). The right hand is then placed with its palm facing the target. There are three types of grips we could choose from – overlap, interlock or ten-finger. Golf was played with a ten-finger grip for probably four hundred years. Around a hundred years back golfers started using the overlap grip as the ball tended to hook with the ten-finger grip due to the dominance of the right hand. Golfers with short fingers or smaller hands were unable to grip correctly with the overlap started using the interlock grip. So select a grip according to your hand/finger size.

Once you have taken a good grip place a tee in the ground and make a few swings trying to knock the tee out of the ground. You should be able to do this without taking a divot. Then place a ball on the tee and try to make the same swings only focusing on removing the tee from under the ball. This will help you to make a downward swinging motion and not a scooping upward one. Do not attempt to hit balls from the ground for the first two weeks.

Nature date

A new survey has claimed that nine out of 10 women are scared to exercise outside for fear of looking unattractive. Due to lack of body-confidence and low self-esteem, many women resort to exercising in the dark rather than face the embarrassment of being seen in public, according to research by the mental health charity Mind.

The humiliation of getting red in the face or the shame of seeing their flab wobble in public was a major deterrent for 60 per cent quizzed.

More than 50 per cent said they would not leave home to exercise because they were ashamed of being spotted in daylight – even though exercising outdoors is often prescribed as a therapy to boost mood. Meanwhile, a separate study found that confidence levels of British women are at an all time low. Only 13 per cent have the self belief to call themselves attractive – and one in four admitted that pressure to be “beautiful” comes from themselves not from their peers, skin care company Dove found. — ANI

Starry struggles
Actor Anil Kapoor believes that star kids have to struggle more in the film industry as there are lot of expectations from them

Anil Kapoor Anil, who has three children of whom Sonam is into acting and Rhea has turned a producer while son is still studying said, “It is a different kind of struggle that they have to do. Our struggle was different. Their struggle is that the expectations from them are more as they are celebrity kids. I feel their struggle is more than us.” Sonam made her acting debut in 2007 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya opposite Ranbir Kapoor that bombed at the box office. She subsequently starred in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6 (2009) opposite Abhishek Bachchan, which again was a flop. Her next release, Karan Johar’s production I Hate Luv Storys (2010), was her first commercial success.

Later again, four of her films, Aisha (2010), Thank You (2011), Mausam (2011) and Players (2012) did not impress the audience.

“I feel Sonam has had a fantastic journey. She did a lot of hard work. It is a different kind of struggle that they have to do. If they do something good, people still expect more. There is certain expectation from her as she is the child of a celebrity,” he said.

Though Sonam’s journey in Bollywood may not be that happening, she is always talked about, especially about her fashion sense.

“When she did Sawariya and Delhi 6 people started saying she should wear fashionable clothes, she is doing Behenji type of roles. She does not have that thing. So when she did Aisha they were like do that kind (de-glamorised type) of a film. She has proved herself, from Sawariya till now,” Kapoor said. “She has done de-glamorised roles in films like Mausam and others but people forget that and talk about her fashion.

Fashion is also an art, you don’t have to look down upon it. It is a big business and there is more money in it than films,” Anil said.

“The way she chooses colours or pattern, there is a certain art in that, she has that sense inherently. You either have it or don’t. She is blessed with that talent, where she has great aesthetic sense, her grace, her beauty, the way she presents herself,” the proud father said. Anil, who has had a brush with international cinema, says Sonam’s fashion sense has been praised by producers and directors abroad. “They think she is like an international personality. She has an aura about her, when she walks in. She inherited it from her mother,” he said.

His other daughter Rhea turned producer with Aisha(2010) which was not a box office hit. Rhea is all set for her next production venture Herogiri based on a book written by author Mainik Dhar, which revolves around an ordinary man possessing extraordinary powers.

The 25-year-old producer, who has bought the rights of the book, would turn it into a full-fledged screenplay and would announce the cast soon.

Recollecting his own struggle, Anil said, “I have worked very hard to get into films. I used to roam with my pictures from one office to other. In the film Shakti (1982) no one noticed my role. Then I did Telugu and Kannada films. I did Prerna that was shelved in between. So to reach where I am today, I did face hardships and went through lots of ups and downs. I used to travel in bus and train to learn acting.” “People love underdogs. When I came into films, people started saying he will surpass Amitabh Bachchan, but it does not happen like that. I was an underdog, so people tried to put me up there but I was sensible enough to not get carried away,” he said. — PTI

Over with the hardships

Rapper Nicki Minaj says although she had an underprivileged childhood, she will never be poor again. The 29-year-old singer had a tough childhood with an abusive father and grew up without a great deal of material possessions but the ‘Starships’ hitmaker says the hardships made her even more determined to be successful, reported a website. “In the business you have to be used to really having all the doors closed. So when you have a childhood where you are used to being told ‘no’ and you’re used to not being able to get the best Christmas gifts, you are accustomed to not always getting what you want. But then you become accustomed to working for it,” she said.

“I never want to go back to being poor. Once you have a taste of that you will always be driven. I know what that felt like and I don’t want to feel it ever again. So yeah, I mean my childhood was crazy but it got me to the point where I had so much faith in whatever I was doing. I just always feel where there’s a will there’s a way and I live my entire life that way now,” she added.— PTI

A memorable story

Priyanka Chopra Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra says that her upcoming film Teri Meri Kahaani, a story of eternal love, will be a memorable movie.

“The movie will be a memorable one. The story takes us through a journey of eternal love between a couple who have vowed to love each other not only in this life but in every life to follow. Their love is so strong that even destiny wants to bring them together,” Priyanka said.

The film stars Shahid Kapoor in the lead opposite Priyanka and has been directed by Kunal Kohli.

“The story starts in 1960 Bombay with Govind and Ruksar, then moves ahead to present times, 2012 England with Radha and Krish and then goes back in time to Punjab, 1910 with Aradhana and Javed,” added Priyanka. “It is three different love stories but I enjoyed the 2012 episode the most,” she added.

Describing Shahid as a “really good actor”, the 29-year-old actress said, “I was playing the real character of 1960s as Ruksar. It was fun to play those parts.” According to director Kunal, the film “is all about love, three love stories... soul mates.... The journey of love is something that has always fascinated me and all of us.” “The banter between the couple, the chemistry, the first look, the pain and anguish of separation, the fun of the meetings, the dreaminess of love songs, the thrill the hero gets while flirting with that one person who suddenly is the most important person. The joy, fun, tears and entertainment of our Hindi Cinema is at its peak in our love stories.

“This is exactly the journey that I went through while writing Teri Meri Kahaani and this is exactly the journey I want to take you through,” said Kunal. —PTI

Madonna’s tough call

Madonna Madonna has revealed that she wants to be a tougher parent to the four children she raises. The Masterpiece singer raises daughter Lourdes, 15, son Rocco, 11, and adopted son David, six, and daughter Mercy, also six, admits that she could be harder on them. On being asked if she is a tough mother, she said that she wasn’t as tough as she should be. “I think I am, but honestly I don’t think I’m as tough as I should be. I think I need to be maybe tougher. It’s hard though. Everyday is a negotiation,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling on US show.

Asked about pictures of Lourdes smoking, taken in New York last month, Madonna said she ‘‘wasn’t very happy.’’ “Cigarette smoking I’m not very fond of, for anyone, I don’t approve of anyone smoking cigarettes, most of all my daughter,” she said. When host of the show pointed out that in the video to her recent track ‘Girls Gone Wild’ she is seen smoking, Madonna defended herself, saying: “Yeah, I don’t smoke. That’s just an accessory, Harry. There’s a difference. “She smoked that cigarette before I did that video, so she didn’t’ get that from me, OK?” The 53-year-old star was also asked if there are two versions of her, an off stage one and an on stage version.

“There’s probably 25, but to my children there’s mostly the one that comes home and says, ‘Have you done your homework?’ and ‘Why are you wearing that?’ and ‘Why did you say that?’ and ‘What are you eating that for?’” she added. —ANI

The check list

Chris Evans Chris Evans has revealed that he likes girls who are “self-deprecating”. The 30-year-old actor doesn’t look for too many particular qualities in a woman, but says the most important quality that his girl must possess is that she must be able to laugh at herself. “I like girls who are self-deprecating. I like girls who make fun of themselves. If you can’t poke fun at yourself, what are you? I just want someone with a good soul. That’s about it. The rest I’m really flexible on. I like a good ass, though. I will say that,” a website quoted him as telling a magazine. The Captain America: The First Avenger star also admits to having a crush on Speed actress Sandra Bullock when he was growing up. “I used to be in love with Sandra Bullock. Sandy B. was my girl. I remember seeing Speed when I was in seventh grade and just thinking, ‘That’s her’,” he said. Although he is now a hunk, Evans said he was nothing like a ladies’ man in his teenage years, and didn’t lose his virginity until he was about to leave school aged 18. “Look at pictures of me growing up. It wasn’t always the way it is now. It was a bumpy road for me,” he said. “There were kids doing a lot more than I was in high school. I just wasn’t there, I guess. I lost my virginity in senior year. It happened one time and only one time,” he added. —ANI

Ileana knows what she is up to

Ileana D’cruz Ileana D’cruz is now allowed to interact with the media. Though Barfi! has been delayed again, she talks about her career, her co-stars, her instincts and more.

City of dreams

I was born in Mumbai and lived here for ten years. I went to Goa and became a model there and started acting in South films when I was 18. It was difficult but I went with my instincts and learnt on the job. Modelling also just happened to me.

On Barfi!

Barfi is a romantic and commercial film. It is entertaining instead of being dark and serious. The theme is serious but you will find the movie refreshing. It just came my way and I took it up after meeting the director. I like the 1970s setting.

Catfights and B-town

There have been stories of us fighting and not talking and all that. PC and I are not best friends but we get along well and we did not fight. I think Priyanka is a fantastic person and such a terrific actress who is constantly challenging herself.

Co-star called Ranbir

He is such an immensely talented actor and the best co-star I have worked with. I have been a fan of his work. He has done an incredible job of playing deaf and mute in the movie.

Barfi! has been postponed again because of the busy schedules of Ranbir and Priyanka. The new deadline in August 31. Let us see what happens next.

Roberts, 44, who has three children, was delighted to hear the news because she feels she knows what exactly to offer the busy couple as a present, reported a publication. “People are starting to ask me and put pressure on me. Babysitting. Yeah, that’s good. It’s an exciting news. It’s always nice when you’re ready to hitch your wagon for eternity to somebody,” she said. — PTI

Bird’s call

The contestants at the Delhi auditions of DID L’il Masters were in for the sight of their lives as they saw judge Marzi Pestonji run out of the studio! What they didn’t know was the reason as to why he was so panic-stricken. Apparently, the DID judge has a huge phobia of birds hovering around him in enclosed spaces. And where did the pigeon come from? Li’l Sanaya came in to audition for the judges along with her pet pigeon Udi Baba who she apparently named after she saw judge Marzi Pestonji being called by the same name in DID Doubles. Dancing to Masakali à la Sonam Kapoor in Delhi 6 with a pigeon on her head, the judges couldn’t help but be charmed by this adorable act put on by an even cuter kid. So post her performance, when Sanaya requested them to allow her to introduce them to her pet pigeon ‘Udi Baba’, they readily agreed.  While fellow judges Geeta Kapur and Terence Lewis were seen petting and hugging Sanaya’s pet, the entire studio doubled up with laughter as Marzi, who was offered a chance to hold Udi Baba, flatly refused to go anywhere near the bird. Awww, that’s cute, Marzi. Your soft under-belly is now exposed! Watch cute Sanaya and her pigeon ‘Udi Baba’ on Knorr Soupy Noodles DID L’il Masters that premieres at 9 pm on April 28 on Zee TV.
