Amritsar, April 16
Fed up with the "quarrels" at home, a 26-year-old married woman today committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan.

The deceased was identified as Ravinder Kaur, a resident of Aara Colony on Majitha road bypass.

The police has booked six members of her in-laws' family following a complaint lodged by Ravenider's parents. A case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC in this connection has been registered with the Sadar police station on the statement of the parents of the deceased.

Those booked are Manjit Singh (husband), Paramjit Kaur (mother-in-law), Dilbagh Singh and Daljit Singh (both brothers-in-law), Mandeep Kaur and Sandeep Kaur (both sisters-in-law).

Deceased's parents Mukhtar Singh and Rajwant Kaur, residents of Verka, said their daughter got married to Manjit Singh in March 2007. They alleged that the in-laws used to harass her for dowry. And this became a major reason for the quarrel between their daughter and her in-laws.

They said few days back she came to meet them at Verka. While returning, Ravinder broke her arm in an accident.

"Today when her elder sister Paramjit Kaur went to her in-laws' house, they said she was sleeping in the upper floor after taking tablets. Paramjit Kaur went to her room. However, Ravinder did not open the door. They peeped into the room through a window only to find her hanging with the ceiling fan," said the deceased's parents.

Vavinder Mahajan, SHO, Sadar police station, said the police has nabbed Manjit Singh, Paramjit Kaur and Mandeep Kaur in this connection while remaining accused are absconding.

Auto-rickshaw drivers call off strike
The police, which had asked the drivers to stop ferrying schoolkids from April 17, extends deadline

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, April 16
The Amritsar Auto Rickshaw Union (AARU) called off its strike, which was scheduled from today, after the police extended the 7-day deadline, given to these auto-rickhsaws to stop ferrying schoolchildren, by eight more days.

Earlier, the police had set the deadline acting on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had asked the police to implement the orders from April 17.

Importantly, with auto-rickshaws still plying, the parents of schoolchildren heaved a sigh of relief.

They said autorickshaws ferry schoolchildren in large numbers. It would not be easy without them.

Dharamveer Singh, Director, Sri Guru Harkrishan School, said it is practically impossible to abandon auto-rickshaws, which ferry children to schools. He said his school has over 5,000 children and about 75 per cent of them use auto-rickshaws as a mode of transport. He said Sahodya School, an organisation comprising 70 CBSE-affiliated schools, would soon call a meeting to ponder over the issue.

AARU president Arun Kumar said the decision has endangered the livelihood of thousands of auto-rickshaw drivers. He said they get a fixed income for ferrying schoolchildren. There is no certainty of getting general passengers throughout the day. Moreover, minibuses cannot enter many areas of the city like the walled area, lanes of Mahitha road, Batala road etc due to narrow roads. But, autorickshaws can enter these places, he said.

He said the traffic police and transport office must ensure that auto-rickshaw drivers follow rules. The errant drivers should be punished. As per rough estimates, there are over 20,000 auto-rickshaws in the city. Agitating drivers had claimed if the auto-rickshaws had gone off roads, thousands of commuters would have faced inconvenience.

ADCP Satpal Joshi said all school managements had been conveyed to bring in an alternative mode of transportation to ferry children. He said fixed spots at different areas could be selected where children could board school buses.

Vallah mandi lacks basic amenities, trade facilities

With no drainage system, the condition of wholesale fruit and vegetable market at Vallah becomes pathetic. photo: sameer sehgal

Amritsar, April 16
The Punjab Mandi Board has failed to provide basic amenities and trade facilities at the wholesale vegetable and fruit market at Vallah. Amenities like toilet, bathrooms, potable water, stay houses for growers and farmers visiting the market from far-off places are missing. Even facilities like cold storage for preserving fresh farm produce and platforms for auctioning the produce are also absent.

Harish Taneja, who operates a shop in the market, said these vital facilities, which can make it a state-of-the-art market, are missing despite the fact that many of these facilities figured in the original plan.

Farmers, traders and shopkeepers dealing in vegetables and fruits are annoyed at deplorable condition of infrastructure at Vallah market located on the city's outskirts.

"I have seen many markets in the state where no fee is charged for parking vehicles. However, at Amritsar's market there is no designated place for parking of vehicles, but there is fee for parking," said Taneja.

A farmer, Jagtar Singh, who supplies vegetables from nearby villages to the market, said that agriculturists faced innumerable troubles in supplying fresh produce at the market. "Absence of cold storage meant that the growers do not have option to store the produce". Growers of fresh farm produce have to sell their produce on the same day, he remarked.

As per the original plan of the market, a plot near four number shed was earmarked for raising a cold storage. However, the plot is still lying vacant, he added.

A wholesale vegetable trader, Jaspal Singh Sethi said the wholesale market sees trade to the tune of Rs 12 crore every month. "Consequently, the market committee earns revenue in lakhs every month. But they are deprived of basic amenities like smooth roads, cleanliness, toilets and stay house for visiting farmers", he rued. Roads in and around the market are teeming with potholes of all sizes.

During rains, these potholes turn into puddles and aggravate the risk of accidents, he said. He said the deplorable condition of the market had created problems for them. Besides, the very purpose of shifting the market from outside Hall Gate to the city's outskirts has not been realised.

Sethi, also the president of the Fruit and Vegetable Merchants Union, said the government had charged Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000 per square yard for space to set up shops in Vallah market in June 2004. Shopkeepers, who shifted from old Sabzi Mandi, were promised state-of-the-art infrastructure at the new market. "But this seems a distant dream," he said adding that the condition has worsened after they shifting here.

Official Speak

I have recently joined and do not know much about missing facilities in Vallah market. Since the problems have been brought to my notice, I will review the original plan. I will do whatever could be done as per the government rules

Amritsar, April 16
Commuters are peeved over the dilapidated condition of the foot overbridge connecting the railway link road and the Hall Gate.

The condition of the bridge had deteriorated many years back. And there has been no repair carried out on the bridge.

People fear that the overbridge may even collapse one day. A resident of the railway link road area, Karamjit Singh, who daily uses the bridge, said repeated communiqués to the railway authorities regarding the pathetic condition of the bridge have failed to draw their attention.

He said holes have surfaced at many places which need to be plugged. Otherwise, these holes could get bigger posing a threat to commuters, he warned.

Another commuter, Rajinder said the bridge becomes useless in the night due to its condition and absence of lights. He said this forces people to cover over a kilometer from Bhandari bridge to reach the Hall Gate.

Railway officials, preferring anonymity, said a proposal to repair the bridge has been forwarded to high officials. "The work will be initiated once the approval is granted," they said.
