Amritsar, April 6 The city police has arrested two persons who were involved in a theft attempt at Punjab National Bank branch inside Guru Nanak Dev Hospital premises on February 27. Unable to open the bank’s safe, the thieves had decamped with Rs 90,000 from an adjoining medical store. The incident had taken place just a few meters away from the Majitha road police station. Out on parole, murderer commits 20 crimes
Amritsar, April 6 The accused, identified as Paramjit Singh, was lodged in the central jail in connection with a murder case and was out on parole. However, he jumped parole and committed at least 20 crimes. "Incidentally, not a single victim of snatching or extortion has come forward to lodge a complaint against him due to his terror in the area. He used to send his man to houses of the 'victims' and extort money by threatening them of dire consequences," said Vavinder Mahajan, SHO, Sadar police station. If anybody refused, he used to enter their houses and thrash them, he added. The SHO said Paramjit Singh was convicted for the murder of a jeweller in 2006. He was serving a 20-year imprisonment at the Amritsar Central Jail and was released on parole on February 28. He was to return on March 28. Within a month, he committed over 20 crimes. He was already facing charges in as many as 27 cases of robbery and snatchings. A separate case under Sections 387, 382 and 452 of the IPC has been registered against him at Sadar police station in this connection, said the SHO. Paramjit Singh has been sent back to the jail. Amritsar, April 6 Parents of the both the accused and victim are police personnel and residents of Police Colony on Ajnala road. Varinder Pal Kaur, the victim’s mother, in her statement said her son, a Class III student, after returning from his school at about 2.30 pm went to play in the ground outside the residence. She said her son said the accused took him to his residence on pretext of giving glass pebbles (kanche). She said when he returned he was crying in pain and his pants were drenched in blood. When she enquired, the boy named the accused for the act. Sukhwinder Singh, SHO, Civil Lines police station, said the accused has been nabbed following the complaint lodged by the victim’s mother. The accused boy has been brought on police remand and further investigation is on. |

Amritsar, April 6 Unable to open the bank’s safe, the thieves had decamped with Rs 90,000 from an adjoining medical store. The incident had taken place just a few meters away from the Majitha road police station. The accused, identified as Bikramjit Singh of Gopal Mandir area and Kuldeep Singh of Aman Avenue, were caught during a naka near Shivaji Park in the Rani Ka Bagh area. “They were riding a motorcycle and were carrying two LCD TV sets. During checking, the duo failed to give satisfactory answers to police enquiries,” said RP Mittal, Police Commissioner. Later, the motorcycle (with registration no PB-02-AR-3184) and LCDs were found to be stolen following which a case under Sections 382, 457, 454, 380, 379 and 411 of the IPC was registered at Cantonment police station. The police also recovered a country-made pistol of .12 bore along with two live cartridges from Bikramjit’s possession. A separate case under relevant sections of the Arms Act was also registered against them. Investigations revealed that they had formed a gang along with Gora of Majitha road and Raju of Fatehabad (Tarn Taran) and used to commit thefts and robberies at various parts of the city. “Gora and Raju were following Bikramjit and Kuldeep Singh when they were intercepted. However, on seeing the police party they turned back and escaped from the spot,” said the Commissioner. “They confessed that they had broken the wall of PNB branch and tried to break open its safe. But as they weren’t successful, they decamped with Rs 90,000 from the neighbouring chemist shop. They had also stolen about 17 LCDs from an LG showroom located near Gumtala bridge. They had also broken the shutter of a liquor vend near Escorts Hospital,” said Mittal. The police has recovered eight LCDs, a country-made pistol and a motorcycle from their possession. The police nabbed two members of another gang involved in thefts and snatchings in the city. Those arrested were identified as Pardeep Kumar of Jawahar Nagar and Rinku of Sultanwind area. The police recovered two stolen motorcycles bearing (PB-02-AN-3010 and PB-02-AN-9228) and five mobile phones from their possession. A case has been registered against them at B-division police station in this connection. |
Strike called off in Delhi, city jewellers continue protest
Amritsar, April 6 Jaspal Singh Kanda, vice-president, Punjab Swarnakar Sangh, said “We do not want to respond in haste. We will announce resumption of business only after getting the formal communiqué from the central leadership of gold traders and bullion organisations.” Despite the All India Sarafa Association’s announcement to suspend the strike till May 10, local gold jewellery shops remained closed throughout the day. Guru Bazaar, a traditional gold market housing hundreds of showrooms and workshops, remained closed. Members of agitating gold jewellers’ associations today held a sit-in protest at Patel Chowk. Even jewellery shops located in upscale markets of the city remained closed. Earlier, MP Navjot Singh Sidhu addressing members of the Amritsar Sarafa and Swarnakar Sangh, assured them of full support in their agitation against the Congress-led UPA government. He said though he would miss the swearing-in ceremony of his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu as Chief Parliamentary Secretary in the Parkash Singh Badal government, he would certainly take part in the rally of jewellers proposed to be held at New Delhi on April 11. Addressing the jewellers, Sidhu said, “Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee would not offer them more than a lollipop”. Bullion traders and jewellers are protesting since the presentation of the budget in which the Finance Minister imposed excise duty on unbranded jewellery, raised customs duty on gold and proposed TDS requirement on sale of jewellery. Even as traders estimated to have lost Rs 20,000 crore at the national-level, but no such data is available at local level. However the Bullion and Ornaments Merchants Welfare Association President Charanjit Arora said the figure must be in crores. He said even the state and Central governments suffered losses during the protest. He said the government has only announced that it would consider the demand for rollback of excise duty on unbranded jewellery and it was for the association to deliberate on this and act accordingly. |

Amritsar, April 6 Speaking on the occasion, the minister said a long-pending demand of the workers has been fulfilled. “The services of the employees have been regularised after assessing the work records,” he said. He said the elections to the municipal corporations and panchayats would be conducted in a fair and free manner. Later, the minister attended the annual sports festival at the Government Medical College and distributed awards. He said the newly built Bebe Nanki Mother and Child Care Institute would be made a state-of-the-art treatment centre. |

Man duped of Rs 62,000
Amritsar, April 6 In his complaint, Nageen Chand, the victim, said the accused, identified as Rahul and Ajay, exchanged his credit card with the fake one and went on a shopping spree. The accused allegedly purchased goods worth Rs 62,000 from Reliance Fresh, Chroma Electronics and Crown mall. He said the accused used to call him regularly while posing as employees of ICICI Bank. They told him that his credit card would be replaces with a Master card under a scheme of the bank. He said the accused came and took away his card while replacing it with the new card. Later, he received an SMS which informed him about shopping worth Rs 62,000, said the police authorities. The Rambagh police has registered a case under Section 420 of the IPC in this connection. |

The children were explained how to brush their teeth properly twice a day with the help of a soft bristled toothbrush. They were also told about flossing their teeth regularly. She explained how fast food, sugary diet and colas can lead to tooth decay and other dental problems and hence should be avoided. She also recommended visiting a dentist regularly to get a full oral health checkup and also get timely treatment for the various dental problems. |

Based on a love story taken from the treasure of Punjabi folk literature, 'Mirza — The Untold Story' is made in a contemporary way in the backdrop of gangster-style culture prevalent in Canada. The youth praised the performance of the actors especially Gippy Grewal. "Gippy is evolving as an actor. The songs are good and appeal to GenX," said Ranveer Singh. "The movie is a piece to silence critics who say that Punjabi cinema can never match pace with Bollywood," said another Punjabi movie buff, Gurjit Singh. "Punjabi rapper, Yo Yo Honey Singh, who debuted in the film, has rendered a good music in his first commercial venture. He has also shown his caliber in acting.
