Sunny days
Three decades down the line, Betaab Sunny is a man comfortable in his own space. The actor, director, producer is happy doing ‘his’ kind of work in one of the biggest industry of the country.
In Chandigarh on Monday, Sunny Deol aka ‘action king’ of Bollywood shares notes on his upcoming films, his journey in filmdom, the unprecedented love that his family has received from Punjab and much more. The year 2012 will see two of his movies — Mohalla Assi and I Love New Year. Sunny sounds quite upbeat about the first venture, which has been directed by Chandra Prakash Dwivedi. “It’s a very challenging role — that of a Sanskrit teacher. Even more invigorating is the story that covers a decade, from the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties,” says Sunny. Based on Kashinath Singh’s popular Hindi novel Kashi Ka Assi, Mohalla Assi is in its post-production stage. When a film comes from a director like Chandra Prakash Dwivedi (he has given the much-acclaimed and tele-epic Chanakya and the film Pinjar. “I got a chance to play a serious character in the film,” says Sunny, who has done justice to many comic roles as well. I Love New Year is a character that this actor has played in various hues over a number of years and seasons. Kangna Ranaut plays the leading lady in the film that Sunny labels as ‘a love story’ that captures 48 hours. Are you happy with the way your career is going? “I have no reason to complain,” says the actor, with two National and two Filmfare awards in his kitty, sitting composed in the hotel suite. Blue shirt, a scarf thrown over, one couldn’t miss the increasing resemblance to his dad! How about the films of yesteryears that one can watch over and over again even to date, when it gets difficult to make through the three hours inside the cinema hell? “Isn’t today’s youth fast food generation?” he questions back. Gone are the days of home-cooked food. It’s fast food that sells today! In fact, the whole country is going through a transformation and the effect is spilled over on different aspects of life; filmdom is just one of them. It’s really not possible to leave art and cinema untouched by what’s going on in society,” he says. Sunny has taken changes in his stride. Any particular milestone that he is yet to achieve? “To keep up with the work. And, working hard in my field is good enough for me,” he answers calmly. Any plans to foray into the upcoming Punjabi film industry? “Well, Punjab is an integral part of almost all my films. I guess that’s good enough.” The love and adulation that his family receives from the region, does that put any pressure to portray Punjab or Punjabis in a particular light? “I have never felt so. I am all so indebted to the great love and support we have received from Punjab. It has been part of the family forever, as natural for me as love for my mother. I rather take it as a motivation to work even harder.” Sunny keeps his personal life much out of the conversation as always, but the family honour is difficult to miss. Compliment him on his father Dharmendra and his affable nature, Sunny’s eyes have a glint and he says with the pride of a small boy, “That’s my Dad.” mona@tribunemail.com

Music beyond boundaries
Take it for granted. When it’s a band from Colombia that lands up as a result of cultural endeavour and has nine artists on board, fusion music has got to be part of the package. Never mind the half jet-lagged team and half non-conversant in English, clueless about Bollywood, nothing is still lost in translation!
Mama Julia, as part of cultural exchange exercise organised by ICCR, takes pride in recreating Afro-Colombian music with a touch of street He adds, “We are basically into fusion music. We incorporate traditional elements from the Caribbean coast but we do it all our way, throw in some jazz, some rock.” The rhythm of the band is made up of traditional percussion from the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Thrown in is the sweetened jungle sound of the Chonta Marimba, an instrument typical of the southern Pacific coast. Says Jatin Mendiratta, director, communications, Embassy of Colombia, “The reason they were chosen was that they play a panorama of all the musical rhythms in their country.” Says Joaquin Salcedo, the conductor, “Apart from the music, we write songs as well. There’s one that speaks of people fighting everyday to earn a living.” The songs generally take up social issues and everyday life. Though, in city, it’s a dance performance that they aimed to capture the audience with. Says another member, “There will be salsa; then our folklore dances on traditional rhythms.” Their idea of Bollywood is restricted to Slumdog Millionaire. Cuts in Paulo, “But then again we know it’s not an Indian movie.” It’s almost a pass-the-buck with each pointing towards the other, when questioned on Indian music. Till we reach and zero down on one of the two female artists in the band; the singer, Yahaiva Mina. All she can come up with is a rhythmic Le Ja Le Ja from Karan Johar’s family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. She adds, “I don’t know the artists, their names, or recognise any of them but I can make out the Jango Bollywood music.” Chips in Joaquin, “I do know about Asian music. I can recognise it but don’t know any song or lyrics.” It’s just been a few hours in the city so all they can comment is "Very well planned." We think the same of their choreographed moves! manpriya@tribunemail.com

Veena’s big dream
If a guy has characteristics like Amitabh Bachchan, she will marry him, says Pakistani actress Veena Malik, who will hunt for her ideal man on reality show Veena ka Vivaah.“Not exactly like Big B but if the boy has certain characteristics like him, like his beautiful voice and a personality like him, I think I can compromise on other things,” said the actress on the sets of TV show Movers and Shakers.
Known as controversy’s favourite child, Veena knows how to handle people. “I think it’s me. Outside factors don’t affect me and I am responsible for all my happiness and pain. Nothing that happens around me affects me. If today you appreciate me then also my reaction would be the same as it will be when you criticise me,” said

Over the TOP
Fashion changes quickly and that is what we love about it! We have barely filled our wardrobes with the latest style and here we have summer 2012 catwalk trend on femininity and glamour. Expect to see hourglass figures, cocoon shapes, floral and tropical patterns (yet again), tribal prints and pastels in tops this season.
And what’s more, girls will dress like girls once again. We mean literally! “Expect to see flowing dresses, bright tones with a lot of baby pink, blue and yellows in different fabrics,” says Akhil Duggar, creative head, Madame. He adds, “The trend for women’s top this year indicates chic fashion but now it’s turn for baggy style. Think loose this summer and the length has gone shorter with a casual silhouette. Kimonos too are calling the shots, but it is the multi-coloured stripes that are making the rounds. Colour blocking too is in vogue.” And hold your breath, tribal prints are hot this season. “Tunics are quite in. And when talking of tunics, think ethnic patterned tunics and fitted silhouettes,” says designer Rashmi Bindra. Lace is once again the blast from the past year. So, you can feel pretty in a lace blouse! “Delicate lace and ruffles make it feminine and memorable. This year too we will witness a lot of lace but only as an added accessory, not a complete outfit,” says Neha Sidhu from Voila. “Embroidered and patterned tops too are a rage and for the cuts it’s the asymmetrical, U and A-line that is in,” she adds. Well, if you dare to wear crop tops, boob tubes, tube tops and the over-sized top are the new fashion statement this year.

Par Excellence
The slice is one of the most common problems in golf. There are more slicers on a range trying to iron out their problem than hook players. The slice apart from its curvature also loses distance while the hook travels longer as the ball ends up rolling a lot. This loss of distance frustrates slicers and the hook player manages well enough by just aligning for the hook.
To fix a slice we must understand the role of the hands, the arms and the body. The hands control the position of the club face, the arms swing the club up and down and control the path or the plane of the swing while the body action supplies the power and is the motor that drives the golf swing. Slicers have a complex mix of problems in most of these areas. The slice is caused by a club face which is open to the path of the swing. The path may be correct or out to in but the club face is always open to the path in a slice. If you are a slicer analyse the cause of the open club face. The left hand grip could be in a 'weak' position which means that less than two knuckles of the left hand are visible and the 'V' formed between the thumb and forefinger points left of the right collar bone (picture 1). Ideally 2-3 knuckles of the left hand should be visible and the 'V" should point anywhere between the right collar bone and the right shoulder. The right hand could be in a 'weak' position. The 'V' of the right hand is pointing left of the chin (picture 2).The 'V' should point to your right ear. The forearms rotate excessively on the back swing causing the club face to be too open (picture 3). The club face should be pointing straight up or slightly shut (11 o'clock). The left wrist is cupped at the top of the back swing opening the club face (picture 4). The left wrist should be relatively flat at the top of the back swing. The club does not close or 'release' through the shot. The left hand remains higher than the right (picture 5) keeping the club face open through impact instead of the right hand rolling over the left and closing the club face. Once we fix the work of the hands we will take up the work of the arms and the body.

Luxury’s new address
One thing that definitely puts this new luxury hotel in a position of advantage is its location. Right in Sector 17, the newly opened Park Plaza, 59th hotel by the Sarovar group, is a premium, full service business hotel.
On Monday, actor Sunny Deol inaugurated the hotel that opened up 85 rooms and 24-hour coffee shop - Cinnamon. The hotel is ready with most of the infrastructure, but trials are on and various facilities will open at different stages. The group has splashed on the latest in terms of interiors and equipment. If counters are Corian, the new wonder material, workable like wood and durable like stone, the walls have colours splashed over canvas (each costing costs Rs 1-1.5 lakh, we are told). The gym Matrix has equipment from Cybek, one of the few companies that still manufactures in the US. “One can put glass and brass, but what’s paramount is to please people,” says Ajay K Bakaya, executive director, Sarovar Hotels & Resorts. “We have spent lots of time and energy in training people,” adds Ajay. The interiors are slick. Each restaurant comes with a different look. If Cinnamon’s USP are the vertical, lit columns, at the Indian specialty restaurant Indi-Spice, hanging lamps do the trick. For the Oriental Blossom, Sarovar’s signature Chinese restaurant, the wall decorated with multi-coloured dishes is the highlight. The hotel promises to serve the best of cuisines from around the world. The rooms, 138 in total, are in three categories. Starting from the basic, they come with DVDs, mini-bars and comfortable writing desks. What scores is that the rooms on one flank look over the green garden. The facilities will open gradually; the introductory stay offer is Rs 4,990 onwards, which includes the buffet breakfast. — Mona

The ‘in’ side
Having a separate utility room is a blessing but unfortunately these are the rooms that keep getting cluttered no matter how hard you try to organize them. Here are a few tips you must keep in mind while designing the utility room- n
No matter where your room is situated in the house, make sure there is a lot of natural light. If you choose to use an attractive window treatment, make sure it doesn't block too much light. n
If the room is in a dark corner or in the basement, make sure to install proper lighting. n
Stack your appliances in the room in a way that leaves enough space for other activities like ironing etc. Usually placing them along the wall works best. Placing them under a counter gives you a flat surface to fold or iron clothes. n
If you wish, you can have customised cabinets for your appliances or lift them to your waist level, in case you have a problem bending. n
If you have front loading machines, you need to keep 48" of space in front of each appliance to provide enough room to walk around open doors. n
Construct over head cabinets for storage. In case of top loading machines, make sure to keep at least 6" of clearance beyond the top of the washing machine with its lid open. n
Make proper provision for drainage. You don't want the room to flood in case the washer hose breaks. Install shutoff valves. n
If space is a problem, stack your dryer over the washer. This is possible with front loading machines. n
A sink is never a bad idea in a laundry room for small hand washable items. A drying bar or a rod to hang clothes is also a must. n
Add adequate laundry bins to store your dirty laundry and clean clothes. n
Add an ironing board that folds up into a panel in the wall. These fold-up units often have a light, an electrical outlet, and a space to keep the iron and supplies out of the way. n
Paint the room in a cheerful colour and add some wall art. Avoid wallpapers due to high humidity levels in the room. (Sukhmani is a Chandigarh-based interior and landscape designer)

Publicity gimmick
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian’s relationship with singer Kanye West is allegedly just a publicity stunt. The 31-year-old, who has been pictured with West on various occasions, is said to be using the relation to divert attention from her split with Kris Humphries, reported a publication. West also went public with his feelings for Kardashian in new track Theraflu. “Whether or not they are in a real relationship, it’s a publicity stunt to sell records on his part and more importantly for her, to divert people from talking about her divorce. If anyone deserves each other, it’s these two. They both love publicity and material things,” a source said. The source also said the duo’s sudden infatuation and public displays of attention at dinner, shopping and when leaving West’s New York City home are “no coincidence they started the same night his new song dropped.” “It’s so calculated and of course, Kim’s mother, Kris, is all behind it. Look at all the great PR they are getting. I must say they make a perfect couple. They both love the limelight and can’t get enough attention,” the source added. Kardashian filed for divorce from Humphries after just 72 days. — PTI
All single and ready to mingle
Actress Tara Reidm, who recently broke up with boyfriend Zack Kehayov, says she is ready to fall in love again.
The 36-year-old said she has no interest in talking about her short-lived romance and wedding to Kehayov, a publication reported. “I’m still single and available, don’t worry about that. I say we just talk about American Reunion, fictional!” she said. The American Pie star exchanged vows with her boyfriend of two months last August while on vacation on the Greek island of Santorini, but she later said the union was not legal. — PTI
Real life inspiration
Vikram Sandhu says he is not making a film based on Divya Bharti. First time director-producer Vikram Sandhu says his debut movie Dream is not inspired by late Bollywood actress Divya Bharti, who died at the young age of 19. There was a buzz that Sandhu is making a biopic on the life and circumstances revolving around the tragic death of the 90s star. “I am not directly saying that I am making a film on Divya Bharti. It is about a young actress who came in the film industry...she was here for some time, created a stir, achieved fame, won everyone’s heart,” said Sandhu. “There are lots of things that happen in the life of a heroine. My film is based on a young girl who becomes a star overnight and her journey in filmdom. It is not based on anyone. I have created a fictitious character,” he said. Asked if the heroine of her film dies in the end, Sandhu says, “I will show that in film, I don’t want to disclose anything now.” Though Sandhu refrained from saying that his film is based on the life of Divya, the film seems to have elements from her life. Divya started her career in the film industry, with a Telugu film Bobbili Raja (1990). — PTI
From real to reel
British comedian Russell Brand is set to make a documentary on drug addiction.
The 36-year-old actor, who has battled alcoholism and drug addiction, will make the documentary for BBC, to which he returns after a gap of four years. He is said to be in talks with the corporation about making the programme for BBC3. He might even do the documentary for free, following the death of his friend, singer Amy Winehouse. The comedian has talked about how he and the singer “shared the disease of addiction”. Brand’s return to the BBC comes after he quit his Radio 2 show in 2008 over smutty messages he left on actor Andrew Sachs’ voicemail. — PTI
Salman has another fan
Actor Pulkit Samrat, who is making his Bollywood debut with Kumar Mangat’s Bittoo Boss, cannot stop gushing about actor Salman Khan, who has developed a liking for him.
The 28-year-old actor says he is extremely lucky to be under the mentorship of none other than Salman. “He (Salman) is my mentor. If he likes someone he goes out his way to support that person. He is a man with a heart of gold and always supportive. I am blessed to have his support,” Pulkit said in an interview. Salman is known for encouraging new talents like actresses Katrina Kaif, Zarine Khan, Sneha Ulal, Hazel Keech of Bodyguard fame and music director Himesh Reshammiya among others. “He has knack of understanding people. What is special about him is that he does things without even your asking for it,” Pulkit added. It all started when Salman attended the music launch of Bittoo Boss as the chief guest, “He liked the promos and even the songs from the film...this is a big thing for me. He has some expectations from this film, hope I live up to it. I just hope whatever he is doing by going out of his way...I do not dishearten him. He is a man with the golden touch. I feel blessed,” Pulkit said. —PTI
No hard feelings
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria refuses to call her ex-husband Tony Parker a villain.
The 37-year-old actress says she wants to treasure the times they had enjoyed, instead of souring their relationship, reported a website. “I think I handled it as gracefully as I could and it was painful, but life goes on. I always said I hold on to the love and not the loss. I think the press always wanted me to hate him and villainise him and I don’t and I didn’t,” Longoria said. After discovering hundreds of text messages from another woman on Parker’s cell phone, Longoria filed for divorce from Parker in 2010, bringing their three-year-old marriage to an end. —PTI
In Adele’s neighbourhood
Grammy wining singer Adele’s new two-million-pound home may be turned into a nightmare if her neighbour’s plan of a property extension materialises.
The 23-year-old Someone Like You hitmaker’s millionaire neighbour in Brighton plans to extend the property to include a plunge pool, which will overlook her house, two balconies and decking, if permission is granted, reported a website. “This would be a nightmare for Adele. It may be she didn’t even know about it but I wouldn’t want to pay 2 million pounds, and then see a neighbour’s pool built outside my window,” a source said. The decking would affect the line of sight from the house which Adele plans to share with boyfriend Simon Konecki. “The big factor in these properties is the uninterrupted 180-degree view owners have from the rear. I’d imagine she’s pretty annoyed,” the source added. If Adele had pulled out of the house purchase on discovering the application, she would still have been liable for a huge bill. — PTI
The next Barbie doll
After Katrina Kaif it’s Ek Deewana Tha actress Amy Jackson’s turn to be crafted into a Barbie doll.
Jackson has reportedly been approached by a leading doll company, who also made Kaif’s look-alike doll, to design a collection inspired by her. “Amy was modelling before Bollywood happened to her. She has always wanted to act and it was a stroke of luck that she got a break in Bollywood. “The company approached her recently, after they saw some pictures of her and thought that she fit the bill. Katrina was a very well known name when the company approached her but expressing interest in Amy was a surprise to us. She is a tall, petite girl with delicate features and they thought she was the right fit for a doll to be designed on her,” said a source close to Jackson. Born to a British family, Jackson made her debut in Bollywood this year opposite Prateik in box office flop Ek Deewana Tha. The 21-year-old is currently in the US to judge a teen beauty pageant competition. The brand will have a US special edition of dolls and an Indian edition as well. — PTI
More weightage
Actress Zarine Khan, who has often been criticised for her ‘weighty issues’, is happy to see that actresses are now piling on pounds to give super hit performances.
The 27-year-old actress, who made her Bollywood debut in 2010 period film Veer opposite actor Salman Khan, said that she had put on weight for the film but people failed to understand that. “I was a newcomer and I was asked to put on weight for Veer since I was playing a princess from the era gone by. I received a lot of criticism from those who were supposed to understand such intricacies of cinema. Things have changed today. Heroines are piling on weight and delivering super hits. It is superb,” Zarine said referring to Vidya Balan’s performance in The Dirty Picture. The actress, whose second film Housefull 2 has hit the theatres, said she was hurt by the criticisms and so got herself into a much fitter and better shape. “Criticism did hurt but I did take that all in my stride. I understood that to be a leading lady in Bollywood, I have to get into a better shape and in Housefull 2 people will see the new me. I am happy to be playing this super-hot glamorous girl. I am looking forward to audience reaction,” she said. In between Veer and Housefull 2 the actress was seen shaking her leg with Salman Khan in the song Character Dheela from Ready. Zareen also said that she considers Housefull 2 as her second chance. — PTI
