Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 26
The city’s football boys (U-16) team might have added another feather to their cap by bagging the second place in the recently held 34th sub-junior Mir-Iqbal Hussain football trophy at Vasco (Goa). But are the heroes of the win really happy after winning the silver medal? During an interaction with the team members, some of the players raised questions on the selection process and said that officials of the Chandigarh Football Association adopt favouritism. According to information, a player (name withheld with the reporter) left the tournament venue just after two days, giving ‘exams’ as the reason for his exit.

“We have given our best and to attain this position. However, even those players who were selected on ‘reference’ also enjoy the same status without even staying at the tournament’s venue. During the north- zone matches, players leaving the venue citing exams as the reason was a regular feature. After all this, how can a player feel good? We have also missed our exams, and if the officials had selected genuine players, we would have been the winners of the tourney,” said the group.

Adding further “Even a layman can make out the apathy of the officials from the selection procedure. Only one goalkeeper was selected in the team. The team played without a substitute of the goalkeeper,” said a player.

l Players were allowed to leave the tournament venue for appearing in examinations, without even playing a single match.

l Only one goalkeeper was sent with the team for adjusting a ‘favourite’ player.

l The officials of Chandigarh Football Association always travel by air or first class. But when it comes to players, they even failed to reserve a second class sleeper seats.

l The boys (U-19) team that won the Dr BC Roy trophy an year ago is yet to receive any award by the association.

l Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda awarded the association a sum of Rs 5 lakh for successfully organising the girls sub junior national games. But no money has been spent to uplift soccer in city till date.

l The members of the present boys (U-16) team are yet to receive any congratulatory call from the officials.
