3 of family die as van falls into Chenab
Udhampur, March 24 The deceased have been identified as Ruby, 26, and her daughters Iqra (3) and Ishrata (5). Her husband Gul Mohammad of Chapnari village near Doda reportedly fell unconscious on seeing the vehicle rolling down into the Chenab. He was brought to District Hospital, Doda, by the police after receiving information from passersby. Both the vehicle and the three bodies were recovered thereafter. Gul Mohammad, who was injured, told the police after regaining consciousness at the hospital that the incident took place around 8.30 am near the Ragi nullah about 28 km from Doda. He had parked his Maruti van on the roadside after its front tyre got punctured. He was going to Jammu along with his family to visit a relative. He claimed that while he was changing the wheel, one of his daughters was fiddling with the gear, as a result of which the vehicle got into neutral mode and rolled down into the Chenab. However, his father-in-law Manzoor Ahmed Bhat alleged foul play into the incident because Gul Mohammad was a professional driver and it was hard to believe that he had parked the vehicle without applying the handbrake in the mountainous terrain. Bhat also alleged that his daughter and son-in-law used to quarrel frequently. Officials said a case had been registered at the Doda police station and investigations were on. Meanwhile, the police has handed over the bodies to

road accident
Jammu, March 24 While Rehman Ansari, a 35-year-old mason from Nepal, survived the mishap with a broken arm, his friends Zibrail and Shamsher were not so lucky. They were among the dead. “Like most of us, they had borrowed Rs 5,000 each on interest from a moneylender in our village to work in Srinagar for the next six months but they are no longer alive,” said Rehman Ansari from a hospital bed with a fractured left arm. “Their old parents will now have to return the borrowed money along with interest,” he added. Recalling the mishap, he said: “Around 11 pm, I along with four others boarded a bus from the Jammu bus stand for Srinagar. The driver, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, was driving the vehicle rashly. Almost everyone on board had asked him to drive safely but he didn’t listen to us,” said Ansari. “I had been visiting Srinagar for work for the past seven years but had never come across such a reckless driver.” “Around 3.30 am, the bus went off road and plunged into a gorge. I heard screams and shrills of fellow passengers before losing consciousness. I regained consciousness in the hospital only to learn that Zibrail and Shamsher are no more,” he added. Ansari, who had worked in Dubai and Qatar for 10 years before visiting Kashmir for work, vows never to return. Another passenger, 24-year-old Mohammed Iqbal of Hasplot in Thannamandi, also blamed the driver for the accident. “The passengers kept telling him to drive cautiously on the mountainous highway but he was under the influence of drugs and ended up killing five of us,” said Iqbal, a labourer who was also going to Srinagar for work. Iqbal has suffered multiple fractures in both legs. “Since it was dark, I could only hear screams and shrills of the passengers as the bus fell into the gorge,” he said. Shah Faisal, another labourer from Thannamandi, who sustained serious injuries, whispered: “I kept telling the driver to drive safely but he ignored my pleas.” Three others from the same village were also also on board the ill-fated bus. One of them, Mohammed Rafiq, died in the mishap. Another injured passenger, Ramchand, from Khanna in Punjab said gas-cutters had to be used to retrieve five injured passengers from the mangled remains of the bus. |

Farooq ‘rues’ joining politics
Jammu, March 24 “Darakhshan is a good writer, but the wrong thing is that she is also a politician. I give her a sincere advise that politics is a very dirty game,” Farooq said. He added, “My father had advised me in this regard. Had I accepted his advice at that time I would have been living a peaceful life.” “It is not possible for politicians to live a peaceful life because they (politicians) have more enemies that friends,” he observed, adding that in politics even friends became foes within no time. While suggesting Darakshan to concentrate on literacy activities, Farooq said, “Politics is a dirty game. Those who are close to you are more jealous of you.” While revealing names of some eminent writers, Farooq said only those writers earned name and fame, who remained confined to literary works only. “It is all due to the pressure of the politics that Farooq Abdullah, even at this age, availed all opportunities to sing or dance,” an emotionally-charged Union Minister said. “I sometimes tried to relax this tension by sitting alone in a room.” Earlier, Farooq released a Kashmiri poetry collection of Darakhshan namely “Chaman Barg Rez”. |

CPM exploring possibility of Third Front: Karat
Jammu, March 24 Interacting with media persons after addressing a convention of the state unit of the party, Karat said results of the recently held elections in Uttar Pradesh were clear indications that the base of both the Congress and BJP was shrinking and people were looking for other alternatives. “We are working to provide a non-Congress and non-BJP alternative in the country,” he said and exuded confidence that an effective alternative would be provided to the people. “Our party would like to see a strengthening of the non-Congress and non-BJP forces in the country,” he said and added that both the Congress and BJP were giving protection to corruption at the highest level. While lambasting the Congress, Karat highlighted various scams in the UPA government. He mentioned about illegal mining in Karnataka to corner the BJP on corruption issue. “Both these parties are furthering the interests of capitalists so one cannot expect any serious efforts from them to contain corruption,” he observed. When his attention was drawn towards the statement of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, who has predicted midterm polls, Karat said, “I have not read the statement. It is not the question of midterm elections, the question is how has the government at the Centre been functioning,” he said. He added, “The UPA has a majority in Parliament because some parties are still supporting it so chances of midterm polls are bleak.” The CPM general secretary refused to comment on the performance of the National Conference-Congress government in Jammu and Kashmir and the recent exposure of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association scam. Earlier, addressing the rally, Karat called for strengthening of the CPM and building a unity of the Left and democratic forces in the country. “The people are suffering from continuous price rise, massive corruption and shrinking job opportunities. It is necessary to have a Left and democratic alternative,” he said. He appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir not to be divided on communal lines. Efforts to divide people on communal lines are being made by forces on both sides. He criticised the Central government for its failure to initiate a political dialogue to ensure a political solution for the problems in the state. State secretary of the CPM MY Tarigami and Mohammad Saleem, member, Central Committee, also spoke on the occasion. |

Preparedness to face calamities imperative, says Omar
Srinagar, March 24 Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said this while addressing a function after inaugurating a Rs 21.38 crore dredging scheme at Jati, Duabgah and Ningli in Baramulla district today. Highlighting the necessity of preparedness to tackle eventualities and calamities, the Chief Minister said floods had always been a threat to life and property in the state. He added that preventive measures were necessary in this direction. “We should be amply prepared and alert to the threats of heavy floods so that we are not caught unawares at the time of emergency,” he said on the occasion. He said the comprehensive flood protection project included the need to increase the intake capacity of major rivers, strengthen bunds, revive flood channels and introduce long term and short term measures. He said the dredging operation in the Jhelum was part of this strategy. “We feel satisfied by constructing bridges, roads, schools, colleges, water supply installations and similar other development schemes for positive public use. But when we create flood protection facilities we pray to the God that we may not be compelled to put these measures in use,” he said and stressed on the preparedness and alertness of the administration and people to face the challenges of nature. Omar said the importance of dredging of the Jhelum could be visualised by the fact that the first dredger was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru at Baramulla during the times of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah some 60 years ago. The dredging operation had continued from 1959 to 1986. The scheme was revived by the Chief Minister today in presence of Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohiuddin and Minister of State for Roads and Buildings Javaid Ahmad Dar. |
