What a bug!

Some fall for the looks, for others it’s an extension of history while for some others it’s the ‘vintage-meets-classic’ feel…owning a Beetle car is sure a matter of pride

Sonam Kapoor’s Aisha may have done more good to the car than her career, but it put across one point — being cute is a serious business! Accordingly, those looking for lots of leg space, boot space, trying to fit in everyone in the family, looking at the practicality of a SUV or those simply looking at value for money will never understand.

However, what everyone will agree with is that Beetle is not the usual car. For the not-so-many who got ‘bugged’ by it, there are many reasons to have gone ahead with the model. “It’s so girlie; moreover it feels like you are a part of some animation movie. It’s a very unique car and for me it spells sheer girl power,” Neha Malhotra, Ludhiana-based interior designer, gives an unending list of reasons for owing a yellow Beetle.

Beetle file

  • The Volkswagen Beetle is also called the Volkswagen Bug.
  • The Beetle is the longest running and most manufactured car of a single design platform anywhere in the world. an The company claims to have sold 20 million Beetles and still counting.

Nevertheless, it wouldn’t make sense to just about everyone. Nods Kulbir Singh, sales manager, Volkswagen, “That’s because it’s a very elite car and meant for a very niche segment; mostly businessmen purchase it.” He adds, “We have sold around eighteen to twenty cars in the Punjab region. That’s a rough figure but that’s a good statistic.”

No denying the fact that it’s for people with a certain mindset. Some fall for the looks, for others it’s an extension of history. Those left, hoot for the ‘vintage meets classic’ feel. “It’s a fun car. It stands apart like no one else. You see so many expensive cars on the roads, but not this one,” Karan Katia, owner, Hotel Sepal, Bathinda, shares on what made him buy it.

For the segment luxury hatchback, many would raise an eyebrow; not count it as part of mainstream vehicles. Says yet another Beetle owner, Preeti Singh, homemaker, “My family went to buy Polo, but saw this car and settled down for it for altogether different reasons.” And she alludes to the Hitler connection - his having asked for a people’s car, having had it designed. She laughs, “For them, it’s a way of paying a tribute to Hitler, who had a lot to contribute to the turn of events in world history.”

Not that there isn’t a flipside. She adds, “A lot of times, people on the roads stop driving and start looking at the car. Some even start taking pictures.” There is a confirmation. Says Neha, “Yes, a lot of times people stare no end. So much so that it becomes irritating and difficult to drive the car. It’s been around for a while now.”

Shivika Gupta, BBA student, might not drive her red one to college everyday, but whenever she does it just cuts across the crowd. She shares, “It’s a fabulous car. Has a class of its own and looks great. One of the primary reasons I bought it was because of the way it looks. I feel it’s a very lady’s car.” As one of them cut in, it’s a cute car. For many that sums up all!

learnt everything from lighting to how to handle a camera from all angles for the project

He has secured a standby career just in case…Pulkit Samrat, the lead actor of Bollywood movie Bitto Boss claims that he can now click a good portfolio shoot! He laughs his heart out. “Thanks to Bitto Boss and the extensive training that I had to go through for my character, I bet I am as good as a professional photographer now,” says this actor who makes his debut with Bitto Boss.

Pulkit plays a small-town photographer from Punjab who is good with his work and then there a few realisations that take him close to reality. Photographer! So, good were you with photography? “I knew nothing about photography, but for the role I trained with my friend, who has a studio in Delhi, for a month. I learnt everything from lighting to how to handle a camera from all angles. This has made me a professional cameraman already.”

We turn our camera to the entertaining Bittoo Boss and then look at the introvert Pulkit. No similarities here. Not a moment is lost before an answer arrives. “Not many similarities between my character and me, except a few. Both are entertaining, hard-working and take pride in what they do. Bittoo is a desi extrovert, but it takes me a while to open up with people,” says the actor who does not believe in planning anything, whether it is life or career.

“I don’t walk into anything with preconceived ideas. I imagined a few things about my debut movie and they are exactly the same. My character, the songs in the movie; I am happy about everything. I just hope audiences like me.”

The chit-chat draws to a close, but we can’t call ‘cut’ till we ask the young lad about his much-talked about tiff with television queen Ekta Kapoor. Pulkit is honest about it. “I am thankful to Ekta for launching me. I owe a lot to her; I only feel that I should enjoy my work. If I don’t, how will the audiences”. The camera pans to his expression — excited. And why not!

Sculpting a success story
Vasudha Gupta

Latika Katt, a woman of substance, is lending her heart and soul to her passion in life - sculpting. She talks about it and much more…

For any ordinary woman, the mere thought of a missing husband would be to drown in a sea of grief. For Latika Katt, whose husband went missing in the year 2000, it gave her an insight into the mindless political system of the country and spineless friends. Busy sustaining her passion for sculpting, her short frame is a striking contrast to the meaningful existence behind her.

In Chandigarh for a sculpting workshop organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi at the Government Museum and Art Gallery-10, Latika Katt inaugurates the camps by ceremoniously washing her hands and putting a ladoo on the stone, which will soon be a masterpiece. Settling down for the interaction, she exudes the spirit of her indomitable spirit. “I joined Bachelors of Fine Arts at Benaras Hindu University to do painting, but had an inherit inclination towards sculptures,” she says. Looking at the adventurous side of art, she was thoroughly inspired by the 3D aspect of sculpting. From making two-inch works of art to twenty-feet structures, this woman is more than just the chisel and the hammer in her hand.

Narrating an incident, she says, “I remember my professor in second year had once told me that I that was not meant for making sculptures. I walked out of the class and told him that one day I will teach him what sculptures are all about.” Today, a sense of pride takes her over as she shares how she sent him a photograph of her 20 foot sculpture. “Sculpting is good for health; you work and then have a good sleep at the end of the day,” she smiles.

Doing the tallest bronze sculptures today, she does not mince words when she shares how much opposition she has had to face. “I was really upset with my father when I was in a class of 500 boys and five girls,” she says. It was the point where her father told her the essence of her life. “He just told me that it’s a man’s world and studying with them will help you understand them,” she says. Fighting her way up, she has not cared much before picking up fights and landing into arguments with men. “At the point I met my husband, Balbir Singh Katt, putting up fights did not leave my side,” she says. Coming from a Hindu Brahmin family and marrying into a Jat family, she raged another battle. “I came without dowry and knew my fight with life had just begun,” she says. Still holding the records for the largest stone sculptures, her eyes still moisten when she talks of him. “It’s been twelve years that I have been searching for him. All my friends who drank wine with me turned their backs against me,” she says. Holding herself together in the most unfavourable circumstances, she knew she had to carry on. “I made new friends, and continued to travel; fought my way to the socio-political set ups,” she says. It was in 1984 that Latika’s studio was burned down. “I was always a powerful teacher and stood up against all adversity,” she adds.

A daughter of a botanist, Latika finds solace in creating nature. “A lot of my work revolves around trees. My mother was a sea of energy. I get a lot of my energy from her,” she smiles. All set to inaugurate her art centre in Benaras, she hopes to make a difference in the life of the girl child. “The one thing that helped my overcome a lot in life was the fact that I was financially independent. I hope to make life better for them,” she adds.

This is the gist of her life. Not Vidya Bagchi fighting for Arnab Bagchi, but Latika Katt is still living Balbir Singh Katt’s dream!

Second time lucky

Stepping into the shoes of the grown up Shivaji, actor Dr Amol Kolhe is glad to be playing this role. He has earlier done the same role in a regional show based on the great Maratha Warrior and feels blessed to repeat the same in Colors’ Veer Shivaji.

What kind of preparation have you done for the show?

I have done the role earlier so no great preparation was needed. But I have to say I feel blessed to get this chance to play the great warrior again. It is a humbling feeling and I am thrilled to be doing the show.  Earlier the show I did about Shivaji was on a Marathi channel and now the one on Colors Veer Shivaji will have a national reach and appeal.

You have done lots of stunts. How is the experience on the show?

It is tough and amazing experience to shoot stunts. I have shot on elephants and horses. I have even jumped from the horses. That needed preparation and hard work. The warrior in real life did so much for our country and this is the least I can do.

Is it worthwhile to do stunts on TV?

Yes the audiences are eager for more. They enjoy new things on TV just like films. They appreciate and recognise the effort. In this show, there have been many stunts, which I am sure the audience will enjoy.

How has been the response to the show?

The response has been great. Playing a national hero like Shivaji and knowing about his life and sacrifices he made for our country, has been rewarding.  I know I have to take this show much ahead of the one I have done earlier. In Maharastra, the audiences are very devoted towards Shivaji Maharaj, so now I have a dual responsibility to satisfy them as well as the national audience. It is a challenge, which I am enjoying.

What is the lure to play this role again?

There are so many personas of Shivaji for me to essay. There is a son, husband, warrior, king, politician and human being in Shivaji. He is the ideal person I feel and I enjoyed doing it earlier and am enjoying it now.

How does it feel to do a role you have essayed earlier?

I have been shooting for 15 days and I feel fortunate to get this opportunity twice to play the character of Shivaji. There are many facets of Shivaji maharaj that are still undiscovered I feel.

Make it up!

Cooking classes now have a strong rival. Short-term make-up courses are fast catching up

The moment you stand in front of the mirror there are some things that need your attention — whether you are wearing the right kind of clothes, donning the right kind of hair style, right footwear, matching handbag or clutch, and last but not the least, the right kind of make-up. All depends on whether you know the real art!

Salons in Chandigarh have started grooming and make-up courses wherein one can get easy tips to for that wonderful make-up. Says Richa Agarwal, managing director, Cleopatra, Sector-8, Chandigarh, “We make it a point to teach our clients the basics of applying make-up. This includes knowing how to apply the right kind of base, product application, the knowledge of buying the right kind of cosmetics and making different kinds of hair-dos.” The lessons are given according to one’s personal requirements. “Nowadays learning how to deck up is popular among girls who are working in corporate houses, students and those who are about to get married,” adds Richa.

Looking stylish is not just about make-up though; one needs to take care of their skin as well. Says Harleen Sekhon from Grace School, Sector-8, Chandigarh, “Although how to apply make-up is important, but maintaining a good skin and hair is equally essential. One should know the type of make-up one needs for various occasions and how to avoid overdoing it.”

“I focus on teaching the right technique and the latest trends,” adds Harleen. She takes grooming classes as well, which includes personality grooming, etiquette classes, body language and developing your own sense of style.

The art lies in using cosmetic products judiciously. Says Mona Sarup, owner of Vidya Tikari, Sector-10, Chandigarh, “The make-up courses we provide are held four times a year. The coaching is personalised, depending upon one’s skin type.” The classes follow a pattern where the clients are told how they look and how they can look even better. “Everyone has a feature, which can be highlighted with proper make-up. The course includes four make-up looks, knowledge about user-friendly products, how to carry a dress and how to make your hair,” adds Mona.

And girls love to attend these make-up classes. Says Ritika Rathor, an MBA student from Chandigarh, “Make-up lessons are so much fun and also a good time-pass. I have taken up a week-long course, which has helped me look perfect at any point in the day or at parties.” Go ahead and learn the art!

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Fight anxiety attack
Simmi Waraich

My son was a good student. However, in the 12th he did poorly. That really upset him. I feel he did not manage his time well and as a result even average students did better than him. He still does not prepare well and then gets very anxious before the exams to the extent that his mind goes blank during the exams.

— Ashita Dewan

Many children who are doing well may suddenly do poorly in bigger classes as they may have poor study habits like cramming the night before, putting off studies till the last minute, poor time management , poor organisation etc. Still, there is always time to change. They can try the following

  • Before exams, just sit in a chair and take five deep breaths. Close your eyes, feel the breath going in. As you breathe out, feel your whole body from your toes to your forehead relaxing. Do this daily. You will feel purposeful and confident. You see yourself at a desk in the exam room environment. You feel entirely at home and attuned to that moment, working effectively and concentrating well.
  • Develop good sleeping habits, and maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
  • Avoid cramming, develop good study habits by making a time table together. Review the time table after a few days if it is not working and identify what you need to change.
  • During the exam. be aware of time allotted for the test, read directions carefully, and identify which questions you will answer and leave questions blank that one is not sure of and attempt to answer them later.
  • Take deep breaths and attempt to regain composure when anxiety levels are high or when negative thoughts are present. Focus on the wall or on a picture and remind yourself “Just focus on now.”
  • Refocus if you find yourself getting anxious. On getting anxious, some people press fingers tightly together or pinch themselves hard—mild pain can shift the focus and reduce anxiety.

Or, mentally counting backwards from 20 to 1 and telling oneself, “I am getting calmer and calmer with each breath and count. If you feel you will waste time on this, remember, spending some time on this will help you answer most questions calmly rather than letting the anxiety build up.

* * *

My daughter was doing well but after she did poorly in college, she lost her confidence. She has given up trying. She attempted suicide once which really scared me. I spend time with her and talk to her. She seems unclear about what she wants to do now.

— Divya Sharma

Continue to spend time with your daughter. Find out options, write them down and then weigh pros and cons. Identify with her the steps she would need to take for this and plan how she can start taking those steps. Discuss that you can review the steps every five days to ensure continuity and identify problems as they come along. Discuss how talking this out with a trained psychologist or psychiatrist can help and set up a meeting. At times, underlying anxiety needs to be dealt with and attention deficit needs to be ruled out. Many adults with persisting Adult Attention Deficits have poor planning, poor organisational skills and need help.

Celeb Point
The stark similarity
Divya Dutta

This is uncanny and strange; this Vidya-Divya discussion that started with The Dirty Picture! Vidya is an actor par excellence, but what I find weird is this constant comparison with her in both looks and acting.

Social networking sites had been mentioning it for a while and then it became a trend. It did not stop there; the industry people I bumped into at parties also said the same! It was becoming an everyday thing for me. You do tend to have similarities with others but this one surprised me because it’s just not ending. ‘Madam you both look same, madam you both act in the same way; madam the spellings of your name are the same too.

Yes we have both done strong roles and I am so proud of a colleague making a mark in the industry. In our industry, they’ll tear you apart if you are not doing well, but if someone believes in you the entire industry latches on to you. The last few films have proved Vidya’s mettle as a strong actor. And this is also one of my best phases in my career. It is a time of strong female roles and we are having a rocking time!

I remember Vidya and I shot for a Kurkure advertisement with Pradeep Sarkar wherein two similar looking girls were required. We had loads of fun, but after that we lost touch. But now we have this strange connect via the audience. Although I personally don’t like comparisons, this one is beyond looking similar. I was watching the movie Kahaani in a theatre recently and one gentleman walked up to me and said – ‘Only two women could have played this role - Vidya or Divya’. Guess I better get used to this one!

The worst one wins

With the season currently dominated by awards that honour stars for excellence in cinema, the Ghanta Awards dishes out trophies to the worst of the movie season, the most poorly constructed movies, most wooden actors and actresses, and the worst rip-offs.

And as one would expect, Bollywood stars obviously don't turn up to collect their awards. But actress

Sonam Kapoor who was nominated for 'WTF Was That' category along with Shahid Kapoor for Mausam played the sport to the hilt and attended the Ghantas as she anticipated not winning it.

Even so, she won and collected the award kindly. She also praised the awards and says, "I went because it's good to have a sense of humour and not take myself too seriously."

Saying this could be her saving grace.

Buzz about Ishaqzaade

The film Ishaqzaade which marks the debut of Sonam Kapoor's cousin Arjun opposite actor Priyanka Chopra's cousin Parineeti, has already generated a great deal of buzz on Twitter.

The film is written and directed by Habib Faisal of Do Dooni Chaar fame. He has also written films like Band Baaja Baaraat.

Amit Trivedi has composed the music for the film, while Rekha and Chinni Prakash have choreographed it.

Diljit Dosanjh His song Lak 28 became the anthem for the youngsters within no time of its release. Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh rocked the music industry with his debut album Ishq Da Uda Ada. Success, however, came in with Lak 28. He made his debut with the Punjabi film The Lion of Punjab. The otherwise introvert singer takes to our one-line questions rather seriously!

Diljit as you know

Most people think I am a hard and tough guy, which I am. But I am pretty much emotional too, something that I am not comfortable portraying.

Voice-maker and breaker

What is a singer without a voice, which means we have to preserve it like gold; I avoid having anything cold that affects my voice. On the other hand, I like eating kada with desi ghee. The warm delicacy does good to my throat always.

Oh! What was I singing!

(Laughs) Of course there are many occasions when I forget the song while performing on stage. Then, I start humming the tune. Works great!

Stage fright…never ever

When I started performing as singer, someone advised me that I should never care about the number of people in the audience. I follow the same; don’t look who is sitting in the crowd, whether they are kids, youngsters, boys or girls. I just perform.

Give me that song

Angrezi beat tey by Gippy Grewal is a lovely song. I would have loved to sing that.

You can carry my voice well

Akshay Kumar is one actor who can carry my voice well. My voice will suit him.

I don’t travel without…

My wallet loaded with credit and debit cards, and a mobile phone. I don’t carry I-Pod because I am into music 24X7.

The ‘in’ side
The art of display
 Sukhmani

There are various techniques used by designers to display your nick-knacks around the house. Here are a few basic tricks you can use to style and display your stuff beautifully.

  • Triangles: This kind of a display is pleasing to the eye and reads the display from the top to the bottom left and right, and then back to the top. The triangle display enables the eye to perceive the group as one whole instead of each individual item separately.
  • Grouping: For a triangle to be effective you need to group your items properly. Pick out the tallest item you want to display and place it at the back. This item will be the top point of your triangle. Now, add mid-sized items in front of the tall one. Make sure they overlap a bit of the tall item. If you want you can add even smaller items in front and sides of the mid-sized items.
  • Repetition: Repeating similar items can also look attractive. If you have a collection of similar items, line them up together in odd numbers to create a stunning display. Although this is not a triangle, yet you need to keep your items close together.
  • Empty Space: If displaying two or three groups on the same shelf or table, make sure you leave appropriate empty space between groups. This will help the eye to focus properly on each group without causing confusion.
  • Keep it simple: Don’t try to display everything at once. Store some and keep changing them throughout the year.
  • Background: Don’t let the backdrop interfere with your display. Busy wallpaper, for example, would distract your attention from the object you’re trying to highlight. Most often, a soft, solid colour serves best as a background, though a bold colour is in order if the object is pale.

Caught kissing: Will and Jade Smith
Caught kissing: Will and Jade Smith

Hollywood couple Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett blew rumours of trouble in their marriage into thin air by kissing publicly at a basketball game.

The actors were caught cuddling at the Philadelphia 76ers-Miami Heat game recently, a publication reported.

Will, 43, and Jada, 40, were "couply and cuddly," said fellow spectator Becky Haring who sat a few rows away from the famous pair. "They were having a good time," she said.

Philadelphia-native Smith danced during the game, even though his team lost 84-78, and at one point planted a wet one on his wife for the "kiss cam." The night out was a family affair for the basketball-loving couple, who posed courtside with kids Willow, 11, and Jaden, 13.

Another attendee, Tom Kline, who was sitting in the VIP section not far from the Smiths, said that they arrived at half time.

"Will and Jada were introduced to the crowd with a loud cheer. She affectionately put her head on his shoulder and he affectionately touched her as they smiled," he said.

Smith is in town filming the M Night Shyamalan action-adventure "After Earth".

So the fuming rumours of the couple’s relation not working smoothly should be done away with because nowadays happy couples are rare. — PTI

All bags Full

Prachi Desai is too busy to work with Rock On!! director Abhishek Kapoor. A source says, "She is busy shooting for Bol Bachchan with Abhishek Bachchan and Ajay Devgn so had to turn down Abhishek's film. She is quite upset about it because till today she had dates and now suddenly her calendar is full. It was Abhishek who helped her make the transition from television to the big screen and he recommended her to Ekta and that is how she got her big break. After Rock On, she sparkled again in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai and got a few films with the Bhatts. She also has a film with John Abraham."

The source continues, "Prachi was keen to do this film because it has a Gujarati backdrop and she is Gujarati too. She tried hard but couldn't adjust the dates. Moreover, Abhishek has waited to direct for a few years now and is doing so with another production house instead of Excel. Farhan is unable to do this movie because he is busy with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Rest all is cool between them."

This romantic comedy will go on the floors soon and release in end 2012 or 2013.

Back on track

After numerous stories of their friendship going sour and reported patch-ups until the last one after bashing up Shirish Kunder, Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan are working together again.

The film in question now is Happy New Year and it is a full-on commercial romantic masala comedy.

A source says, "Things are good between SRK and Farah now. Happy New Year is Farah's long cherished film. She wanted to make it before Main Hoon Na. After Om Shanti Om, she wanted to make it but SRK didn't give her any dates and she made Tees Maar Khan with Akshay Kumar. SRK got upset about that as Farah had declared she would only work with him. After a few attempts, they have made up as well. This film will be co-produced by Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan. It will go on the floors in November after SRK wraps up Yash Chopra's film."

The source continues, "Farah has finally scripted the film to her satisfaction and it can now go into production. So, pre-production activities will begin soon. The casting of the leading lady also has to be done. This time, it might be Kareena Kapoor if she has dates. This is a very big film as Farah is working with SRK again and it is a miracle. This film will release on a grand date in 2013, probably during Eid or Diwali time.

A few days ago Lohan was accused of hit and run outside a nightclub. The incident led her friends to advise her to stop going out at night until she is in the clear from her probation.

Lohan was said to have struck a man with her new Porsche and fled the scene when leaving Sayers Club in Hollywood recently.

The actress, however, was adamant she was innocent.

Hollywood beauty Charlize Theron says she finds it hard to be away from her newly adopted son Jackson.

The 36-year-old Snow White and the Huntsman actress had to leave baby Jackson at home while she attended the Human Rights Campaign gala recently, a publication reported.

"He's doing great. It's very hard for me to leave the house now so you know how important this is because I was like standing at the door going, 'Ah, this is so hard!,'" she said.

Theron is not quite ready to sign up for babysitting duty though.

"I don't think anyone would ask me to babysit," she said. Honoured with the Ally For Equality award for her advocacy work for the LGBT community, she said, "Marriage equality is about more than just marriage. It's about something greater. It's about acceptance that I will always be your cheerleader and I will always be your friend." — PTI
