IPS officer who took on mining mafia killed; probe ordered
Gwalior (MP), March 9 “We salute the young IPS officer for his daredevilry in checking illegal mining. We have ordered a judicial probe into the incident,” Chouhan told reporters in Bhopal. Kumar was cremated at his village, about 50 km from Mathura, with full state honours in the presence of thousands of mourners. His sobbing wife Madhurani Tewatia, an IAS officer posted in Gwalior and currently on maternity leave, lit the funeral pyre. Kumar’s father Keshav Dev said the killing was a “well-planned conspiracy”. “He did not receive cooperation of the local police. He stopped vehicles carrying stones for check. Is it the work of the IPS officer, or the work of a thana-level police?” Dev said. Chambal range DIG DP Gupta, however, said, “Till now, we do not have any evidence to indicate that the killing of Narendra Kumar Singh was a planned act.” Narendra Kumar Singh, the 2009-batch officer, was posted at Banmore as the Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) a month ago and had taken on the mining mafia by seizing number of trucks and tractors engaged in illegal quarrying, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Chambal Range DP Gupta said. The incident occurred at Banmore around 1 pm when Kumar, who was out on patrolling in his official jeep, saw the trolley loaded with stones, he said. Kumar signalled the driver to stop, but he did not pay heed. So, Kumar followed the vehicle, cut in and stood in front of the vehicle after getting down from his jeep. But the tractor driver, Manoj Gurjar, drove on and knocked down the officer who was crushed under the wheels. The officer was declared brought dead at the hospital, the DIG said. It prima facie appeared that the mining mafia, which is active in the area, was responsible for the incident, he added. Gurjar was arrested and a case registered under Section 302 of the IPC against him, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Uma Shankar Gupta said. — PTI |

UP Cong chief quits after poll drubbing
New Delhi, March 9 Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Joshi said, ”I have decided to resign. As the leader, I take responsibility for our loss. It is unfortunate, we were expecting better results,” she said, adding that the Congress president had kept her resignation letter and will take a view in due course. AICC general secretary and incharge of UP Digvijay Singh is also learnt to have offered his resignation when he met Sonia Gandhi two days ago. It has not been accepted. The Congress president held individual meetings with party general secretaries on Wednesday to understand the reasons for the party’s poor showing in the recent Assembly polls, but a detailed introspection is expected to take place later. The party may go in for organisational changes subsequently while serious thought is being given to the promotion of state-level leaders as recent trends have shown that parties that have strong regional satraps fare well in the states. While conceding defeat, Sonia Gandhi had said on Wednesday that the party will sit down and analyse the results in each state and correct the mistakes made in these elections. The Congress is still in a state of shock after being dealt a knockout punch in the Assembly polls. It lost the election in Punjab, which by all accounts it should have won. It managed a victory in Manipur and is on its way to form the government in Uttarakhand, but was routed in Goa. As for Uttar Pradesh, the Congress was able to win only 28 seats, just six more than it had won in 2007, despite the aggressive and intensive campaign undertaken by Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi. The Congress’ First Family has been making desperate attempts to revive the party in Uttar Pradesh where it has been out of power for over two decades, ceding space to regional players like the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party. The party was particularly humiliated in Nehru-Gandhi family pocket boroughs of Amethi and Rae Bareli where it was routed while none of the party MPs were able to deliver in their respective constituencies. To make matters worse, party leaders have been busy sniping at each other since the declaration of results. Sanjay Singh, the Congress MP from Sultanpur, whose wife Ameeta Singh was defeated, publicly declared that the UP party unit was top heavy, adding that he did not campaign in these elections as the party did not want him to do so. This drew a sharp reaction from Rita Bahuguna Joshi who said it was wrong on Sanjay Singh’s part to speak out at a time when the party was in a crisis.

Colour poisoning kills child in Mumbai
Mumbai, March 9 The incident came to light around noon when the children started showing signs of severe colour allergy. “Children were vomiting and feeling dizzy. They were brought to Sion and Rajawadi hospitals,” a police officer on duty at the Dharavi police station said. The child who died in the incident was Vikas Valmiki, 13, from Ghatkopar. He was also taken to Sion Hospital, but could not be saved. According to Health Minister Suresh Shetty, three other children are also undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sion Hospital. State Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who visited the hospitals this morning, has ordered a high-level inquiry into the tragedy. He told reporters that the children fell ill after the chemicals present in the dye were absorbed by their skin. The CM praised the doctors for acting quickly by procuring and administering an antidote, thereby saving the lives of many children. According to the Health Department, many children who showed only minor symptoms of allergy were treated at small clinics. The high-level committee which is probing the incident is headed by Medical Education Secretary IS Chahal, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board member Milind Mhaiskar, Food and Drugs Authority Commissioner Mahesh Zagde and Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar. The committee will submit its report in 15 days. The police said bags of a chemical dye left near a garbage dump were reportedly picked up by children and passed around Dharavi and nearby areas. Most of the victims were from slum clusters like Shastri Nagar, Shahu Nagar and Lokmanya Tilak Nagar in Dharavi, the police said.

Sena to mark Fukushima anniv with Jaitapur protest
Mumbai, March 9 "We will bring together fisherfolk, cultivators of the famous Alphonso mangoes of Ratnagiri farmers and common people one platform to oppose the Jaitapur nuclear power project," says Rajan Salvi, the local Shiv Sena MLA. Claiming the support of more than 90 per cent of the local people, Salvi said the Sena was mobilising the people for a show of strength on March 11. Local residents' groups that have so far been fighting the power project on their own have also veered towards the Shiv Sena, thus landing a big blow to the government which has been differentiating between them and the main opposition party in Maharashtra. The Janhit Seva Samiti which was the first to oppose the project said it will join hands with the Sena to hold the rally all over the district. Local farmer leader Pravin Gaonkar of the JSS told reporters that villagers have been subjected to cruelty by the state administration. He alleged that farmers have been subjected to firing, arrests and beatings inside police stations at the behest of state politicians who are pushing for the power project. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray has alleged that the proponents of the project have been receiving funding from foreign sources. "Those who want the project to go ahead should be investigated for their foreign links. The project is backed and built by foreigners even if our people have to face the consequences afterwards," Thackeray said in a statement.
