Depite ban, ‘killer’ trucks sneak into city
Amritsar, March 3 Daily commuters especially, two-wheeler drivers continue to face harassment due to traffic snarls caused by the ‘unrestricted’ movement of these trucks and buses inside the city. A couple of days back, city witnessed three road mishaps which claimed three lives. In one of the incidents, a woman was run over by a speeding truck laden with bricks killing her on the spot. The victim was going to bring her child from school when the mishap took place near Sultanwind Chowk. The movement of trucks should be allowed only at night when city traffic is less. District administration has also passed instructions and issued a ban on their movement during the day. However, giving scant regards to the ban, they could be seen plying on the main GT road, Sultanwind area, Tarn Taran Road, Chheharta, Putlighar area etc. Although the police has taken steps, including fixing the times to stop the entry of trucks inside the city, but the truck drivers escape the eyes of the cops and enter the city, said a traffic cop. “We have challaned over a hundred trucks for violating norms in the past two months. But the problem still exists we will take further steps to stem the problem,” Karanjit Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police said. But residents of the city, while pointing fingers towards the traffic cops allege that the unscrupulous truck drivers grease the palms of the traffic to enter the city. “We see many trucks entering the city limits by way of giving entry fee to the traffic cops deputed on duty,” alleged a shopkeeper on the main GT Road near Tarn Wala Bridge. Transporters having connections in the administration, police department or with politicians also gain entry without much difficulty, he alleged. |
