For example, the MRP printed on a 10 tablet strip of Amzine (Cetinizine-Di Hydrochloride tablets) is Rs 19. But the retail chemist shops are paying just 90 paise for each strip to the wholesale medicine dealers.

Slidenafil, a citrate tablet, is another drug with Rs 216 as MRP but the wholesale price of this medicine is just Rs 33.

NICIP+Plus, a strip of 10 tablets of nimesulide and paracetamol, has Rs 33.50 as printed MRP but in the wholesale medicine market, the drug is available for just Rs 4.65. Nimucel Gold, another combination of nimesulide and paracetamol tablets, has Rs 36.30 as MRP but the wholesalers sell this 10 tablet strip for just Rs 3.40.

The bills of these and many other medicines are in the possession of this correspondent.

With this huge difference in the actual price and the printed MRP of many of these branded medicines, some doctors prefer to prescribe these selected brand names, not the generic names.

While a generic name has the active ingredient of the medicine, a brand name is the trade name the manufacturer gives to the medicine. So, by prescribing the brand names of these costly medicines, some doctors earn a good commission and get gifts from many pharmaceutical companies, said Dr SS Gill, vice-chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS).

Even a large number of life-saving drugs, like the expensive cancer medicines, are pushing the families of the cancer patients into poverty as they have to pay an exorbitant price for these medicines, said Dr SS Gill.

The families of many cancer patients not only lose their loved ones but money also, said Gill, while narrating instances of the fleecing of cancer patients.

Most cancer drugs are horribly expensive and the MRP printed on these drugs is some times manifold higher than the actual price, said Dr HP Yadav, head of the oncology department at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot.

The sale of these drugs not only fetches huge profits for the retailers, wholesaler chemists and the pharmaceutical companies, but also for some doctors who recommend these expensive drugs, said Dr SS Gill.

Many pharmaceutical companies and drug dealers are far more interested in money than they are in cure, said Gill. "Many times, I have raised the matter with the union and state government and requested many pharmaceutical companies to stop this unethical practice," said the vice-chancellor.

To curtail this fleecing, Baba Farid Medical University is directly buying some general medicines from the pharmaceutical companies. But in purchase of some specific medicines, not available in the university hospital, the patients are charged exorbitant prices, said Dr Gill.

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers recommends that the MRP should not exceed more than 50 to 100 per cent of the manufacturing cost of the drugs.

However, the MRP of the drugs of some reputed pharmaceutical companies carries more than 500 to 1000 per cent of its actual cost of production.

Only the government and society can jointly fight this corrupt practice. "We even need a Lokpal like institution to tackle this menace," said Dr Gill.

Villagers nab robbers, win kudos from cops

Ferozepur, February 11
“Halla Bol” seems to be latest mantra which the villagers in this border area have adopted. Apparently irked over the frequent cases of thefts and extortion, the residents here have taken up cudgels to nab anti-social elements themselves.

In an incident that took place yesterday at night, residents of village Gamewala under the Mamdot police station caught hold of two of the robbers who were attempting to loot a shop in the village. "The villagers acted smartly and thoughtfully as they surrounded the entire area to get the robbers arrested, though some of their accomplices managed to escape," said Sulakhan Singh, DSP (Detective), adding that the police officials were also informed timely, who arrived to arrest the accused.

The DSP (D) said the robbers had come in a Tavera vehicle and on two motorcycles. "A motorcycle and a mobile phone along with some equipment which the robbers had brought to execute their sinister designs were also seized," he added.

Meanwhile, lauding the effort of the villagers, SSP Hardyal Singh Mann today presented all of them with commendation certificates. The SSP said that many such incidents would get sorted out following the arrest of these two persons. The villagers honoured today were Nishan Singh, Sucha Singh, Sukhchain Singh, Tajinder Singh and Amrik Singh.

Dera chief’s case deferred to Feb 18
Gurdeep Singh Mann
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, February 11
The court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Harjeet Singh today adjourned the case of the Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for February 18.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim had allegedly hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community by wearing a robe similar to the tenth Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh.

Earlier, the police had filed an application in the court of the CJM for cancellation of the case along with an affidavit of the complainant Rajinder Singh Sidhu which says that he had not seen the Dera head dressed as Sri Guru Gobind Singh.

Sidhu, however, later clarified that he does not wish to get the FIR cancelled.

During the arguments today, senior advocate Nand Lal Garg said that even if a challan is presented in the court, the sanction of the Punjab government is necessary for taking cognisance after the completion of the investigation.

Pleading the case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim, advocate Navkiran from Chandigarh said the case should be pursued even if the complainant withdraws his petition as the offence is towards the Sikh community and not any individual.

Later, talking to TNS, advocate Navkiran said, “Rajinder is only an informant who raised the matter. Secondly, Gurmeet Ram Rahim has filed a petition in the High Court demanding the quashing of the FIR wherein he admitted to giving ‘jaam-e-insaan’ to his followers at Salabatpura, the Punjab headquarters of the Dera. It shows that the Dera head admitted to his crime”.

The advocate alleged that a compromise has been arrived at between Gurmeet Ram Rahim and the Shiromani Akali Dal with the help of the police. He said that the compromise was reached between the police and the Dera head three days ahead of the elections to woo the voters in favour of the Akalis during the Vidhan Sabha elections.

It seems that the court may now ask for the cancellation of the report, ask the police for further investigation or the court may also proceed on the basis of the record which has already been submitted.

}We have prayed that the matter submitted in the court is enough to take cognisance in the case and summon Gurmeet Ram Rahim,” he said.

Meanwhile, Baba Hardeep Singh of Gurusar Mehraj, insisted that the police should submit a challan in the court at the earliest. Hardeep Singh said that it will be clear in the next hearing whether the case would reach its logical conclusion.

Abohar, February 11
The CBI has arrested Shanker Lal and his wife Santro Devi of village Dharampura near here as the Punjab and Haryana High Court had rejected their appeal against the sentence awarded by the Special Court.
