Arrangements in place for Braille ballot users in Bathinda dist
1,859 Braille ballots to be dispatched for visually impaired voters; two Braille ballots would be given at each booth
Megha Mann
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, January 24
Altogether 1,859 Braille ballots would be dispatched for the blind voters spread across the six constituencies of Bathinda district.
The Braille ballots are meant for the literate blind voters, while the illiterate could take along their attendants to cast votes.

Two Braille ballots would be given at each of the 929 polling stations situated in the district. Interestingly, though arrangements are being made for the blind voters, the District Election Office does not have a consolidated figure about the number of blind voters in the state.

"That is why we did not get any order to prepare separate list of blind voters. We are depending on the list used in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. But some of the Returning Officers (ROs) have taken initiative and collected these figures," said the officers at District Election Office.

The RO Bathinda (Urban) Harjit Singh Kandhola said he was not aware of the number of blind voters. "The voter list revised from January 2 to January 4 is yet to reach my office," he said.

The RO Bhucho (Reserved) ADC Bhupinder Singh Rai said there were 71 voters in this constituency, the RO Bathinda (Rural) SDM Dr Abhinav Trikha said there were 122 blind voters and the RO Rampura Phul SDM Sukhdev Singh said there were 72 voters in his constituency.

The RO of Talwandi Sabo constituency, SDM Gurmeet Singh, and the RO Maur AETC Pawan Garg said that there were no blind voters registered in their constituencies.

Earlier as per the rule one person used to accompany the blind voters. "Now, the blind persons can cast their vote without any help," said the election officers.

Before the introduction of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMSs), which have a strip of paper encoding the options in Braille engraved on it, the blind voter used to be accompanied by someone who would help him cast his vote.

"However, not all the visually impaired voters would be able to cast vote on their own as there are a large number of blind people who do not know Braille. Such people will again be dependent on helpers," said Gurmeet Singh
Jeeda from the Akhil Bharatiya Viklang Chetna Parishad.

Lamenting the state of blind people living in the district, Jeeda said that for an illiterate voter, Braille is an alien word. “Sadly enough, physically challenged people are no one's responsibility and hence find little mention in election manifestoes of different parties,” he added.

Sarup promised ministerial berth

Bathinda, January 24
Terming the SAD candidate from Bathinda (Urban) Assembly constituency Sarup Chand Singla a member of the Badal family, president of the SAD and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today promised a berth in the State Council of Ministers for Singla if the voters of Bathinda help him coast to victory in the Assembly elections and the SAD-BJP alliance formed the government again.

Addressing an election meeting in support of Singla at Paras Ram Nagar here today, Sukhbir also asked the voters not to commit any mistake in the elections because if the Congress came to power again, it would not release even a single penny to Bathinda for development purposes.

On the other hand, if the SAD returns to power, there would be no difference between Chandigarh and Bathinda as development here would be at par, he added.

Sukhbir also said that the SAD-BJP government had spent crores on development work in Bathinda. In case the SAD suffered a loss in the Assembly elections in Bathinda, then everybody would be compelled to think that the people did not give importance to the development work. So, make only false promises before the elections and forget them after that.

Sukhbir also said that after visiting about 70 constituencies throughout the state, he now felt that the SAD-BJP would certainly form the government again. He also expressed the hope that the SAD-BJP alliance would win 85 seats this time.

He also lauded the SAD-BJP government for providing various facilities to the people, like wheat at cheap rates to the poor, and condemned the Centre by holding it responsible for the price rise in the country.

Sukhbir said that if the SAD-BJP government returned to power, it would enhance old age pension from Rs 250 to Rs 600 per month, 'Shagun scheme' from Rs 15,000 to Rs 31,000, wheat to poor at Re 1 per kilogram, 100 per cent drinking water supply and sewerage facility in Bathinda city.

Among others present on the occasion were SAD candidate from Bathinda, Sarup Chand Singla, SGPC member Sukhdev Singh Bahia, Mayor of Bathinda Municipal Corporation (BMC) Baljit Singh Beerbehman and senior deputy mayor of the BMC, Tarsem Goyal.

Bathinda, January 24
Veenu Badal, wife of People's Party of Punjab (PPP) supremo Manpreet Singh Badal, today called upon the people of Punjab to press the button of 'Kite' (the election symbol of the PPP) on the electronic voting machines (EVMs) on January 30 to bring about a drastic change in the administrative set-up of the state, in which there will be no place for corruption, bribery, red beacons and poverty.

Addressing an election rally of Sukhdeep Singh Bhinder, the PPP candidate from Bathinda (Urban) Assembly constituency, in Partap Nagar here today, Veenu Badal further said this was for the first time that Punjabis had the choice of choosing a third alternative in the elections as the PPP had been formed to break the chain of alternative governments formed by the Congress and the SAD-BJP.

She also said the deteriorating conditions on various fronts would bring about a change in Punjab when it would have a Chief Minister with a clean image. She said if the people of Bihar could get rid of Lalu Prasad Yadav's reign and form the government of Nitish Kumar, a man with a clean image, who had changed the destiny of the state, then why can't the Punjabis do the same in the elections.

She said Manpreet was to come here to address the rally but could not reach due to shortage of time as he was busy campaigning in all the Assembly constituencies of the state. However, she said he would try to come here before January 28.

Veenu Badal said there was a need to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor to make the state prosperous in real terms. She said the PPP had been formed keeping in view this aspect. She also asked the people to choose a person, like Manpreet Badal, as their next Chief Minister, who could change the destiny of the state as well as its people.

She asked the people to vote for "Kite" as kite is a symbol of prosperity and happiness. She also asked the people to celebrate January 30 as "Basant" festival this time.

PPP candidate from Bathinda (Urban) Sukhdeep Singh Bhinder also appealed to the people to help form the government of a third alternative, the PPP and other constituents of the Sanjha Morcha. He asked the people to ensure victory by casting votes for the candidates of the PPP and other constituents of the Sanjha Morcha.

Among others present on the occasion were district secretary of the CPI Jagjit Singh Joga and the district secretary of the CPM Sat Pal Bharti.

The RTI application, regarding the tractor trolleys, was filed by Sonu Maheshwari of the Noujawan Welfare Society on December 16 last year and a reply to it was sent on January 19 this year.

n the RTI application, Sonu had enquired about the traffic rules and regulations regarding the tractor-trolleys, month-wise details of the number of challans levied on the tractor-trolleys from the year 2009 till now, the money collected through these challans and a detailed report on whether tractor-trolleys are allowed to ply carrying construction material like sand, gravel and bricks.

In its reply to the application, the district transport officer said that according to the traffic rules and regulations, the tractor-trolleys can be used for business and agriculture related purposes. The reply also clarifies that tractor-trolleys are required to have a valid permit to carry construction material. A challan is levied on the tractor-trolleys that ply without a valid permit or have evaded tax or are overloaded.

According to the information received from the college, as many as seven companies participated in the placement week.

The companies that participated include the property portal Instant Makaan, immigration group WWICS, Fortune 500 company Manpower, telecom solution provider Infotel Connect, multi-business firm Rich Infra India Limited, IT company NSPL and the hospitality giant Ashoka Group of Hotels.

During the placement week, as per the results declared by five companies, as many as 37 students have already been placed.

Two companies, Infotel and WWICS, are yet to declare results of their selection process.

The tentative packages that have been offered by these companies range between `1.20 lakhs and `1.80 lakhs.

The students were chosen after gruelling rounds of presentation, group discussions, written tests and interviews.

Terming the placement week “successful”, head of the Department of Training & Placement, Gaurav Garg, said, “This placement week went pretty well. I would like to call it successful. It is a great thing that hospitality giant Ashoka Group and Fortune 500 company Manpower came and shortlisted students from the Malwa region. While planning for the placement week, the number of companies we had expected to visit our campus was the number of companies that actually came to our campus.”

“We had been planning for the placement week since December last year. Initially, a budget of `1 crore had been sanctioned for the placement drive. But after seeing our efforts, the MD of BFGI, Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, sanctioned a limitless budget. That gave a major boost to our drive. A lot of money is spent when we call and host the companies at our campus,” he adds.

BFGI has a total number of 77 MBA students. A second placement week will now be organised for them in February.

“The second placement week has been scheduled from February 6 to February 10. Although we are yet to receive confirmations, we are expecting some big names like Axis Bank, Jindal Group, Birla Tyres, ITC and Trade India to visit our campus during the second placement week for the MBA students,” says Garg.
