SI, ASI suspended for shoddy probe

Ambala, January 18
Ambala Police Commissioner Anant Kumar Dhull today suspended two police officers for for not conducting proper investigation of cases.

According to sources, the Police Commissioner had ordered the suspension of Jiya Lal, Sub Inspector posted at Maheshnagar police station for negligence in a dowry harassment case. He had also ordered the suspension of Assistant Sub-Inspector Jagir Singh posted at Barara Police Station for shoddy handling of the group clash case registered at their respective police stations.

The Police Commissioner had also ordered departmental inquiry against two other officers namely Suresh Kumar and Rajinder Kumar, both were posted at Mahesh Nagar police station. The action follows a personal complaint by a resident of Raja Park, who met the Police Commissioner and aired her grievance. She told the commissioner that she had filed her complaint with the Mahesh Nagar police station but no action was taken on her complaint.

The police also did not help her get back the dowry items from her in-laws place, the sources added.

RO trains candidates for polls

Dera Bassi, January 18
The returning officer and SDM, Dera Bassi, Rajesh Tripathi, today held a meeting with candidates and their representatives regarding Assembly election and gave them guidelines regarding the election procedures.

Candidates and their representatives were given directions regarding maintenance of election expenditure and on the model code of conduct. They were told that election posters should not be pasted on government buildings and for the pasting of posters on private buildings, the consent of concerned persons should be taken. Election material was also distributed among candidates by the RO.

Woman alleges gangrape

Ambala, January 18
A woman has filed a complaint with DCP (Rural) Parveen Mehta this evening alleging that four local youths gangraped her in a marriage hall on November 20, 2011.

She said in the complaint that last year, on November 20, she went to attend a marriage along with her two sons. There she was told by a waiter that a bearded man was calling her to a room. Assuming it was her brother-in-law, as he also kept a beard, she went.

The people present there served her a drink, consuming which she lost consciousness and was raped, she says. She also says that one of the youth pointed a gun at her and threatened her with dire consequences if she reported the matter.

DCP Mehta confirmed that he has received a complaint in this regard. He also said that the case has been handed over to ACP Raj Kumar Walia for investigation.

Tussle on to win supporters of rival group

As the election campaigning is picking up, the candidates have started building pressure on supporters of each others to change their loyalities. The musical chair competition between Prof. Prem Singh Chandumara, SAD(B) candidate and Didar Singh Bhatti SAD(B) rebel and now PPP candidate, over winning over each other’s supporter has become the talk of the town.

Chandumajra is making all out efforts to win over Bhatti’s supporters and Bhatti is trying hard to keep his supporters with him. In an interesting incident, Chandumajra succeeded in winning over the supporters of Bhatti. Papu Sehdev, Shami Kapoor and their supporters at Sirhind town and they were presented siropas during a function and their photographs and statements were released to mediapersons. Today, Bhatti and his supporters thronged their residences and they were re-inducted into PPP by presenting siropas. Such incidents between them have been taking place regularly and have become talk of the town.

Baltana double murder
Two accused sent to two-day police remand

Zirakpur, January 18
Two accused who were arrested yesterday for murdering Shikha Jindal and her daughter Priyanka at their shop-cum-house in Harmilap Nagar (Baltana), Zirakpur, on January 12 were produced in the Dera Bassi court today from where they were sent to two-day police remand.

Giving the information, the Zirakpur SHO stated that the arrested accused Arun Kumar and Pawan Kumar Jangra were produced in the court and sent in police custody for two days.

The police official said that during investigation it was found that Arun Kumar, who had a criminal past, went to Saharanpur to attend to his court case after committing the crime. He said the police team was investigating them. “We are investigating and both accused may be involved in several incidents of crime held in the Zirakpur area”, he added.

The police had arrested Arun Kumar and Pawan Kumar Jangra, both in their mid-20s, from Patiala road. They used to frequent the shop-cum-house to buy cigarettes. They planned to kill the victim for her jewellery. On January 12, the accused came on a silver motorcycle at 2 pm and killed Shikha with a sharp-edged knife after entering the house. They then called Priyanka upstairs on the pretext that her mother was calling her, but she remained in the shop. After about 20 minutes when she came up, they pounced on her and strangled her.

Main accused gets 7-day police remand

The police has started its search for the blood-stained clothes of Rahul, the main accused in the siblings’ double murder case. It is also looking for the handle of the broken knife, which is missing till now.

On these grounds, the district court here sent Rahul to seven-day police remand. The police, which produced Rahul in the court of civil judge (junior division) Gurpratap Singh today, sought 10-days police remand.

It informed the court that the police was yet to recover the blood-stained clothes which the accused was wearing at the time of committing the crime.

The police also informed the court that it needed the remand to trace the missing handle of the knife which was used in the crime. The court decided on a seven-day police remand.

During the hearing today, nobody from Rahul’s family came to meet him. Nobody represented him as his advocate. He did not talk to any mediaperson during the hearing.

Thieves decamp with jewellery from temple

Bhupinder Tiwari, a resident of Dashmesh Enclave Dakoli, Zirakpur, complained that three laptops were stolen from his shop number 2901, Sector 22-C, last night by breaking the locks. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered against the unidentified persons. In another case, thieves struck a temple at Sector 19 and decamped with valuables, crowns and cash last night.

Ravinder Kaushik, the priest of the temple and a resident of Sandal Kalan village, Sonepat district, Haryana, reported that unidentified thieves stole two garlands of gold, a flute of the idol of Lord Krishna and four silver crowns from Hanuman Mandir, Sector 19-C, last night. A case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 19 police station.

10 booked for fraud

Colonel Tejinder Singh, a resident of Sector 27, along with 12 others alleged that Manoj Kumar Vashist, chairman-cum-managing director of Wealth Care India, along with nine others conducted a seminar at a hotel in Sector 17 in March 2010. They introduced themselves as the owners of the company.

The complainants invested an amount of Rs 2.5 crore believing them in order to gain profit in a short time. Later, it was found that the company was fake. The accused also returned some cheques to a few of them, which were dishonoured by the bank. A case under Sections 201, 406, 465, 467, 468, 471, 474, 506 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Arrested

The police has booked Vinod Kumar, driver of a CTU bus (CH-01GA-5052), as he hit a cyclist, Manja Mutu, near Garcha Turn, Dariya village.

The cyclist received serious injuries and is admitted to GMCH-32, Chandigarh. The accused was arrested and was later bailed out.

1 held for rape

A resident of Chandigarh alleged that Chhotu, Sonu and Ajay entered her house in Mauli Jagran and raped her. Acting on her complaint, the police has registered a case of criminal intimidation and rape under Sections 452, 323, 506, 376, 511, 34 of the IPC at the Mani Majra police station. One of the accused, Ajay Kumar, has been arrested.

Booked

A brawl between two persons resulted in the death of a Kajheri resident. The police has booked one person in a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

A case under Section 304 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 36 police station against Majnu, a resident of Kajheri village, who assaulted Gurcharan, a resident of Fatehpur Colony, Sector 21, Panchkula. The brawl happened on January 7 and the victim succumbed to injuries on January 10 at GMCH-32.

1 held for robbery

Radhe Sham, a resident of Dadu Majra Colony, alleged that Bittu, a resident of Kaithal, Haryana, and two other persons, identified as Ganja and Rinku, robbed him of one jacket, one mobile phone and cash Rs 3,000 at a gunpoint near a wine shop, Sector 56.

A case of robbery under Sections 392 and 34 of the IPC has been registered and Bittu has been arrested, while other two are absconding.

The handball team of Panjab University (PU) got the better of CSJM University, Kanpur, during a match of the ongoing North Zone Inter-University Girls Handball Tournament being held at Postgraduate Government College, Sector 11, and DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

The local outfits defeated the visiting side by 27-14. Earlier in their first match, CSJM University, Kanpur, defeated RLM Avadh University, Faizabad, by 23-10.

Raghav takes lead on Day II

Giving strong competition to visitors, the local golfers continue to make their presence in the ongoing CNEB All-India Amateur Golf Championship being held at the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

Local lad Raghav Bhadari hit one-under 70 for the total of 143 points to take the lead during the second day of the competition. Honey Baisoya of Delhi secured the second position after hitting one-over 72 for the total of 143, while Bangalore’s Udayan Mane, who came eighth yesterday, shot level par 71 for the total of 144 to manage the third position. Khalin Joshi finished fourth.

On the other hand, Curtis Griffths who has a best round of the day along with the leader of one-under 70 for the total of 145 finished fourth and Mohd Dulal Hossain of Bangladesh shot two-over 73 for the total of 145 to take the sixth spot.

Karan Taunk finished at the 12th position after hitting seven-over 78 for the total of 148 to slip to the 12th position, whereas the defending champion, S Chikkarangappa, maintained his 11th position by hitting another three-over for the total of 148.

In the international team championship played simultaneously, leading team India “A” (Honey Baisoya 71,72 and Angad Cheema 72, 75) played for the team total of 290, while India “B” (S Chikkarangappa and Khalin Joshi 73,71) remained second after securing a total of 292.

Curtis Griffiths (75, 70) and Jack Colegate (75, 73) of England are one point behind at 293, while Sri Lankan team (N Thangaraja and Vijita Bandara) remained at the fourth position with 296 points.

Bangladeshi team of Mohd Nazim (79,78) and Mohd Dulal Hossain (72,73) came fifth for the total of 302, India “C” (Gagan Verma and Siddharth Semwal) came sixth with the total of 306, while Bhutan (Capt Gyamba Dukpa and Thinley Namgay) finished seventh with 364 points but failed to qualify for the match game.

Former cricketer Harold Ghosh dead

Former cricket player Harold Ghosh, who played first-class cricket for Eastern Punjab, Northern Punjab and Railways from 1951 to 1975 died in his hometown, Jalandhar, yesterday.

Born on July 15, 1936, Harold played 72 first-class matches as a left-handed batsman and slow left arm orthodox bowler.

St Soldier’s lift cricket title

All-round performance by Arjun Sharma helped St Soldier’s School to win the Cricket Champions League Tournament held here.

Arjun scored unbeaten 122 runs and took four wickets to defeat RIA Panchkula Warriors in the final. The team scored 342 runs in the allotted 50 overs after losing seven wickets.

The winning team opened their innings with Kshitij Sharma (61) and Sidharth Danda (22) who gave the team a match-winning start.

After Sidharth lost his wicket, skipper Arjun Sharma joined Kshitij and scored unbeaten 122 runs studded with 16 boundaries and four sixes. Jatin Sharma also contributed 68 runs, including six sixes.

For bowling side, Rohit Pundir claimed four for 40, while Vaibhav claimed three for 48.

In reply for Panchkula Warriors, Vaibhav Sharma (64) and Arjun Azad (32) were the main scorers for the team but failed to take the team to target. The team bundled out for 252 runs in 44 overs. For giving their best performance during the tournament, Arjun Sharma was declared the man of the series, while Jatin Sharma declared the best batsman. Arjun Azad bagged the best bowler title and Rohit Pundir was adjudged the upcoming player.
