AD-d to memory
The Indian advertising industry has witnessed a sea-change ever since the honchos from international advertising firms took over. The concept of selling a product on the basis of a pretty face and dancing dolls seems to be locked up in the closet, as the younger generation is busy waking up to inspiring or truly entertaining ads, which represent them the best.
“The latest ad to inspire me is the Tata Tea Jaago Re campaign,” says Sahil Joshi, 19-year-old studying business management at Cardiff University. “It is about corruption and the economic breakdown, which tends to inspire the youth to raise a finger against the flawed society,” he says. Having gotten goose bumps when he first saw the ad, the campaign has left a strong impression on his mind. Sometimes, the ad preferences also showcase the personality of the individual. Drowned in her friends list from morning to night, Arti Talawr, a young 18-year-old, just loves the Airtel har ek friend zaroori hota hai ad. “It is something that the teens can relate to as friends technically rule lives once you step into high school,” she says. Advertising also tends to sometimes take the youth back in time. “I just totally loved the Dairy Milk ad, which came out long ago, where the girl breaks into a dance sequence in a cricket field,” says Riddhi Chawla, a B.Com student from Government College for Girls-11. No doubt, the ad has amassed huge fan-following, for her the creativity is more important. “Like the ‘Fevicol’s Fevicol Ka Mazboot Jod Hai Tootega Nahi’ was something which one would relate quality advertising with,” she says. For others, it is about a strong story board. “How the advertisement is made adds value to the quality of advertising in a nation,” says Aryana Vala, currently working with Books and Brew. “How they make the story or introduce a concept is important, like Zoozoo’s, they were not even creatures, but the ideology and the concept behind them made them more popular than the cricket matches,” she laughs. The inspiration is not only limited to the government-aided projects but also basics like tea and washing powder. “If you check out the latest Nirma ad, it does not have the typical storyboard of a woman cursing her washing powder; it is symbolic of women empowerment,” says Rashmi Narula, a young housewife. Still, it is the motivational ads that take the cake. Kriti Chawla, an 18-year-old, says, “Initially, I had liked the Pepsi’s Youngistan ad, but lately the Jaago Grahak Jaago has been something that keeps me hooked.” Considering the fact that only a few know about the possibility of discounts on MRPs, there is low probability that people won’t watch. “These are the kind of ads that stay with a person long after the commercial is over,” she adds. Oh, by the way, did you check out the latest Coke advertisement? It’s fun, colourful and vibrant…just how do you like it! vasudha@tribunemail.com

100 percentile!
It was a known practice with writers to suddenly vanish in the woods, in some isolated wooden cabin, shut themselves up for months and one day suddenly appear with a masterpiece. But that was sometime back.
Today while talking to Neeraj Chhiba, the writer of popular book Zero Percentile, we can hear a hammering noise coming from the next room. “I am shifting my place; it’s just some construction work. I am working with a software company in Gurgaon; I cannot afford to go the hills to write. I have to make-do with whatever space and time I get, even amidst the construction work,” he adds. After the success of his first book, Neeraj is now ready with a sequel, Zero Percentile 2.0, a story of greed, friendship, conspiracy, an attempt to murder and a hostile takeover bid that ends in a pulsating climax after seven days of bitter fight for control. “As a writer it was deliberate effort to keep an open end so that I could take it up later on. I would be coming up with the third edition as well, so everything is pretty much planned,” he says. Neeraj Chhibba, a 38-year-old professional, went on to pursue Engineering at Volgograd, Russia, where he spent substantial years of his life. Those days and a few other things formed the inspiration for writing his first book. “I came back from Russia with a lot of experience and ideas in my head. I had thought that I would definitely do something about it. In 2005, I wrapped up the ideas in a book Zero Percentile and went ahead by getting 1,000 copies printed. I happened to gift one of the copies to the Rupa House and that’s when they decided to go ahead with the printing,” says Neeraj. His sequel, however, is not meant only for youngsters or those engaged in a software company, “it is for all those who are young at heart and part of this world. And I don’t think it is another one of those boring books on the IT industry. It has all the elements of a drama, which leads to a pulsating climax.” Bringing in one’s own experience into creative writing comes easy to a writer. It makes the whole text believable. “All I can say is that it is an art. In my first book Zero Percentile, I had put in a lot of my own experiences, but for my second book I have researched a lot on various characters,” shares Neeraj, who loves to drive. This is the time when ideas come zipping by! With his first book he carved a niche for himself in the literary industry because of which Rupa publications decided to come up with 50,000 copies of the book in one print. With his second book, Neeraj is confident of creating ripples in the literary circle. Spare us the candidness, but writing a book sounds and even looks like a child’s play today. Write if you can write something, the mantra is so easy. “It is not about writing becoming easy; it is about the opportunities available. Thanks to technology, laptops, I-pads, now people can write, rewrite, edit and store their data. Earlier, writing involved a mandatory knowledge of using a typewriter. Besides, unlike any other business that involves money, writing is creative and I think just about everyone has an urge to express his or herself at some point of time,” he says. You are right, and this time 100 per cent! jasmine@tribunemail.com

A print that roars
It was during the early 1950s that the potential of this fashion trend was tapped for the first time - Christain Dior came up with a collection in leopard print that comprised accessories, gowns and jackets. Scroll through the websites of all the top-of-the-line brands and the same leopard print, experimented with in terms of colours and shapes on designer creations, springs up.
Beginning with Dior again, to shield its loyalists from chilly winters in the West and in the third world , it has come up with fur coats, jackets, scarves, all in animal prints and in various colours. The list of designer brands that have picked up the animal print theme this season is pretty lengthy. Salim Asgarally explains the presence of the print in every brand store - “Animal print has an intrinsic sex appeal. A designer doesn’t have to do a lot in terms of cut and style because the print guarantees that.” Salim did a complete collection dedicated to the print a couple of years ago. “Rather than two colours in stripes on a fabric as a design element, use the same combination in animal print; it won’t take much time to decide which is more stylish and sexier.” Zara and Marc Jacobs has, interestingly, interspersed the animal print with winter colours - grey, black, blue and brown. Instead of going with print fabric entirely for pullovers, the creations have the printed fabric on the collars or cuffs, giving them a very chic look. The motif is not just limited to fabrics and apparels, high-end bag brands Louis Vuitton and Fendi have used the animal print as well. Louis Vuitton, in fact, before the Valentine’s Day last year, launched a special animal collection. And the coin purses and wallets were quite a hit. Besides the usual leopard print bags, Fendi came up with a range of zebra prints. Totes from the designer houses of Christian Louboutin and Yves Saint Laurent make for very interesting options. The sole condition that applies in owning one is the price! Model Sonalika Sahay, for the same reason, opts for the stylish yet reasonably priced Zara and Satya Paul. “I have been seeing the print on the shelves of fashion stores for a very long time. They are here to stay. My favourite possessions are a Zara jacket, Dior scarf and Satya Paul sarees.” She recalls walking the ramp in leopard print kaftan for Suneet Verma at a recently held fashion show. The very affordable option in Chandigarh that you shouldn’t shy away from is Madame and fabrics at Satya Paul. Although the use of print in Madame is limited to the hood caps attached to the jackets, when you throw them on your back the colourful animal print is visible. At Samsaara Taj, Sector 17, Satya Paul fabrics in animal prints are a rage again. The leopard print georgette saris in grey and red combination will make for a great purchase. Delhi-based fashion designer Preeti Kapoor further explains why anything in the basic yellow black leopard print is a must-have in your wardrobe, “The basic leopard print is still very bohemian after all these years. You don’t have to try hard with it to make a style statement. If you can’t carry off a fur coat confidently, go for other options like a scarf, a bag or a small hat.” Do you still need a reason to experiment?

Right CLICK
Google, the search engine, definitely has a lot to contribute in terms of making people popular with just one hit. The name Sunny Leone sure rings a bell here! But, if we talk about more beneficial things that Google and its AdWords have done, then Chandigarh-based Rishi Sachdev, the man who established Aryan Florist in 2004, owes a lot to the search engine.
Today, the company has a track record of delivering flowers within three-four hours of ordering even to the remotest villages of Punjab. Google AdWords changed the face of his business and in return it makes him the best Google campaign. Says Rishi, “I started using AdWords with a low budget of Rs 200 per day and I was surprised to see that business shot up phenomenally. Today, it has increased to around Rs 2,000-3,000 per day due to the value derived from the online medium.” How the Google AdWords has brought in this change, Rishi who now targets 100 cities of India, shares, “It allows the flexibility to change the AdWords campaign budget at any time and adjust geo-targeting at the country, region and city level, which are the important features of Google AdWords. This in turn increases the traffic online and we get more visitors than we would otherwise get,” says Rishi, who feels this acknowledgement from Google will change the face of business. Flowers are delicate and so should be the treatment,” Rishi smiles. For Valentine’s Day, this would be working as a great device! jasmine@tribunemail.com

Star Track
Hollywood actress Olivia Munn has become the latest celebrity to have stripped off for PETA’s anti-fur campaign.
The 31-year-old actress Magic Mike star, has bared it all in a new anti-fur billboard in LA, joining the likes of Khloe Kardashian and Elisabetta Canalis who have earlier participated in PETA’s ‘I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur’ campaign.
Munn also filmed a video exposing the Chinese fur industry, which is currently the world’s top exporter of animal pelts, reported a publication. “As a proud person of Chinese descent, it broke my heart to learn just how terribly animals suffer and die on Chinese fur farms and that there are no penalties for this abuse,” Munn says. “When you think about even that little tiny trim of fur on your gloves or on your collar, that is still coming from an animal that had to endure so much pain just for you,” she adds. “There’s nothing good about pretending like you don’t know.” Previous supporters of the PETA campaign include Charlize Theron, Eva Mendes, Lea Michele, Pink and Christina Applegate. —PTI

Yeh Khula Aasmaan is about kite-flying
Makar Sankranti, the Indian kite flying tradition/sport is back in vogue. While Bollywood has had its share of the sport in films such as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and one can’t neglect the minimal importance it has received in comparison to popular sports like Cricket or Football. However, Bollywood having revolutionised with every passing year, it seems like times have changed. No wonder, around the festival of kites Makar Sankranti, Bollywood announces its first ever film incorporating our tradition of kite flying as a prominent backdrop in the form of Yeh Khula Aasmaan. Directed by Gitanjali Sinha and produced by Hemendra Aran (Gitanjali Creations), Yeh Khula Aasmaan stars veteran actors Raghubir Yadav and Yashpal Sharma in principal characters. Speaking about the film, Raghubir Yadav says, “I am extremely proud to be associated with this film. In my view, kite flying is much more than an art, sport or festival. A kite symbolises free spirit, an unchained soul flying in the open sky. In our film Yeh Khula Aasmaan, we have tried to depict the very important lessons of life through the medium of a kite.” Yashpal Sharma further adds, “I can proudly say that after Lagaan, Yeh Khula Aasmaan is the only film for which I have received such a great response. The best part of the film is that it addresses important issues of our life in an extremely entertaining manner, also bringing back the essence of the kite flying tradition.” Yeh Khula Aasmaan revolves around Avinash, a young boy going through an extremely challenging phase of life due to his academic failures. He feels an immense vacuum which unfortunately his busy parents are unable to fill. In desperation he visits his Grandfather (Dadu) after several years. Being the Best Kite Runner of his era, he uses the ‘kite’ to subtly impart the lessons of life and prepares him to face life. Under Dadu’s company Avinash discovers many unexplored yet invaluable facets of life finding true Friendship, Love and Inspiration to lead a life full of hope, joy and success. Director Gitanjali Sinha says, “Kite Flying has been a great Indian tradition since many generations, and sadly, it’s losing its prominence and importance with every passing year. With Yeh Khula Aasmaan, I hope to bring back and sustain the soul of this tradition in the hearts of the people.” — HRM

Nargis Fakhri vs Amy Jackson
Arjun Rampal wants to cast Nargis Fakhri in a film while the producers want Amy Jackson. A source says, ‘Arjun Rampal is doing a film directed by Nikhil Advani which is produced by UTV. Arjun has worked with UTV on Raajneeti, We Are Family, and most recently Heroine. The makers want to cast Amy Jackson opposite him while Arjun suggested Nargis Fakhri for the role. The film is a romantic comedy drama.’ The source continues, ‘While there was talk of Nargis reading scripts and even being offered Krrishh 2, there has been no announcement of her next film. She is busy with endorsements. She got mostly bad reviews for Rockstar. Both Nargis and Amy are of foreign origin, both are bold, both have been models. Amy will be seen in Ek Deewana Tha and she has also done the original South Indian version of the film. So she has more acting experience than Nargis. Both are good choices for the role. It will be a while before the film goes on floors and the final decision will be made in sometime.’ Arjun Rampal has said that he didn’t suggest any name. We have to say that we think the role doesn’t require too much acting. Arjun will look good with either of the gorgeous girls!

Year of love
Year 2012 is the year of romance and comedy and hopefully, good times at the box-office. We bring you a list of romantic-comedies that seem promising and are filled with A-listers. Which one is your pick?
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Directed by the acclaimed Ayan Mukerji, this rom-com will be shot in the gorgeous valley of Kashmir and brings together former lovers Ranbir and Deepika. We have high hopes from this one since Wake Up Sid was a very well-made movie and Ranbir is choosy about his films.
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tuu
The movie may not be fantastically original but what makes this interesting is the union of Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan for the first time. We look forward to their chemistry, the peppy music, and the jazzy locales of Las Vegas. Teri Meri Kahaani
This is Priyanka Chopra’s first light-hearted film in a long time and it pairs her with former flame Shahid Kapur. This is their second film post the gritty Kaminey. It is directed by Kunal Kohli and is set against the backdrop of Bollywood through the 50s, 60s, and 70s. It will release in June. It will be fun to watch PC and Shahid in a rom-com with loads of singing and dancing. Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya
This one pairs the soon-to-be-wed Genelia D’souza and Riteish Deshmukh and is releasing around the time of their wedding. Genelia is over-the-top while Riteish is the nervous hero. It is a filmy film and looks heavily influenced by Jab We Met. We hope it is watchable! Student of the year: This is Kuch Kuch Hota Hai meets Glee in true Karan Johar style. The campus romance launches newcomers such as Siddharth Malhotra, Aalia Bhatt, and Varun Dhawan. Expect lots of colour, fun songs, and laughs. — HRM

Warring Khans
The unending Saga of the two biggest Khans continues, with the possibility of another ‘yudh’ on the brink. Salman refuses to acknowledge SRK’s presence, whilst Shah Rukh leaves no stone unturned, when it comes to poking fun at Sallu Bhai. SRK shot an advertisement for a popular cable provider network that he endorses. What comes as a surprise is, Shah Rukh mimicking and donning the costumes of Salman’s most popular and loved characters from Dabangg and Veer. How did Shah Rukh become so Dabangg and Veer? Was it the sheer thrill of poking fun at Salman or was it the big moolah? Or has SRK taken an affinity to Salman’s characters, because Don and G.One failed miserably? We wonder how Salman is going to react looking at Shah Rukh enacting his popular characters! Will he now mimic Don and G.One or take the high road and just ignore the incident?

Age ‘old’ story
Kareena Kapoor is 31 years old while Imran Khan is 29. Bebo is not only older to Imran in real life but even on screen in their forthcoming film, Ek Main aur Ekk Tu. The actress essays a character who is elder to Khan’s character in the movie. As Kareena began her career long before Imran, the makers felt it was better to set the age factor in perspective in the story as well.

Jodi Breakers
This film pairs Madhavan and Bipasha for the first time. Cocktail: Ooh! This rom-com has been penned by the super-talented Imtiaz Ali and directed by Homi Adajania. It is shot in London and brings together Saif and Deepika. Knowing Saif, it ought to be refreshing and fun.

Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh starrer Band Baaja Baarat was a huge success at the box office and so to recreate the same magic producer Rajan Shahi is coming up with a show on Imagine which is similar to the concept of YRF hit. However, there will be a few changes in the characterisation. Like the movie, the show will be set in Delhi where the female lead will be a fashion designer and the male lead, an aspiring actor. A new comer from Haryana has been finalised to play the lead. Step up
It’s rightly said that adversity brings out the best in you and Paul Marshall, touted as the coolest hip hopper of the season bore testimony to the axiom during the Dance Ki Kasauti round. At the elimination episode every Master nominates two members of their team, whose performance according to the them have not been up to the mark for the Dance Ki Kasauti round which is an acid test the contestants have to pass to stay alive in the competition. All eyes went wide looking at Paul’s bizarre half Marathi manoos and half bai costume. But once the song Apsara Ali from the super hit movie Natrang rolled out, Paul mesmerised everybody with his smooth locking and popping interspersed with seamless transitions from being a male to a female and vice versa. Master Geeta was very proud of her protégé, who did justice to her choreography and made sure the outcome of her vision on stage was a stunner. Master Remo could not stop raving about the beauty of the performance; the same would apply for the audiences when they see it on air. After Paul’s stupendous fantabulous fantastical performance when Jay tried to make fun of his attire, Dada came to his rescue and said, “Jay if you can match up to even half his performance, I will give you the Sunheri Taqdeer Ki Topi. Off the screen
Creative Eye and Sahara One’s Neem Neem Shahad Shahad, which is based on the importance of a joint family in the Indian society, is soon shutting down due to its poor performance and so the channel (Sahara One) has taken a call and has decided to pull the show off air sometime next month .

New kid on the block
Aakanksha Singh may be a new face on television but she isn’t new to acting. The pretty actress has acted in more than 10 plays before her debut on television. We spoke to Aakanksha about her show Na Bole Tum... Na Maine Kuch Kaha, background, her character and more… I auditioned last year in Jaipur and received a call from the producers to come for the final test. I gave the test and got selected. I couldn’t believe it until I finally started shooting for the show. Tell us about your background?
I come from Jaipur and have an educational background. My mom is a teacher and I am currently in the third year of psychotherapy. How did you get into acting?
I always loved dancing and I was drawn into it. Actually my mom loves theatre so because of her, I got into theatre. That’s how it all began for me. Are you a trained actor?
I just began with theatre. It’s the best way to learn. Theatre gives you a strong foundation in acting. Were you nervous when you shot the first episode?
Yes, I was. The first shoot went really slow. But I am slowly getting a hang of it. Acting isn’t new to me yet it’s different from I had been doing in theatre. What do you like the most about your character?
I love its simplicity. Megha is what she is. She does no show-off. Even her looks and style are very simple. I’m the same in real-life. I don’t like to wear make-up so much. How is your rapport with your co-stars?
It’s very good. Not just my co-actors or director but everyone is so friendly and helpful. Everybody is supportive of me and encourages me. Who is your inspiration?
Without any doubt, it’s my mother. I have seen her struggling and in tough times. But she never gave up. |

High on fashion
We are into the first fortnight of the New Year. So here are some fresh trends you would love to follow - from dresses to bags to shoes; hair clips and bands, there are a host of things on offer. And more than the clothes, it’s the accessories that demand instant change.
Though the outlook for spring/summer 2012 is balance - where natural and technological innovation team up for an elegant makeover - it is time to step out in lively, bold spirit; mixing and matching things for a chic look! Ba(n)g on target
A season of more eclectic and open styles, it’s the Gladstone bag that is the hottest trend for season. Wondering what is this bag all about? A close cousin of doctor’s bag, this one has become almost every woman’s arm candy this season. Functional, elegant and smart, this is one accessory worth investing in. Says an employee of Da Milano in Sector 17, “The trend of oversized bag has been there from quite some time now, but this season we see the oversized, box-shaped Gladstone bags. Though these bags have been seen on celebrities’ arms for quite some time now, it’s only recently that it’s has stabilised itself in the mass market.” Though the choice is all yours, whether you want to include it in your wardrobe or just shun it as another statement accessory, luxury brands have now placed this bag on the frontline of runway fashion. Talk about styles and these bags come in high-quality leather, silk trimmings to studded metallic features. And when choosing a colour - go for an all-season variety, one that will sail through winter into spring. Some classic shades that’ll always work are tan, reddish brown, charcoal black, navy and plum red. Besides these you can also go for sorbet yellow, grey and moon white. Waist matters
Belts have been a major trend in the past year and they continue to add a sparkle this year as well. Though everyone knows that belts give a nice slim look to the waist, they also lend a sense of style. Says Swati Mehrotra, footwear designer, “Leather belts are going to be a big trend this year. We will also see jewellery belts that will be decorated with stones, beads, metals, clips and rivets. Fur is still a big trend when it comes to clothes and this would also be seen in belts. Thin, velvet and side-buckled belts will also be a hot trend.” Primitive look would be in for jewellery and we would be seeing natural-looking pieces this season. “Bright and attractive colours would be in vogue this year. This season we would see bold and chunky pieces; choker necklaces would be a hot trend. Platinum and diamond would be the winning team and crystals, pearls and beads are expected to be a big hit this year,” says Savvy from Silver and Gold Haze. Hats off
It's so nice to see that hats have made a huge comeback this year! And whether it’s a coat, curvy dress or pencil skirt, the hat goes with all. Whether beanies, cloches, caps, trilbies or trappers, hats in every size, shape and style are the ultimate topping this season. On the international fashion runaway we see oversized headpieces in every form. Ornate feathered fascinators, sequin-covered berets, complete with demure eye veils…. hats are here to stay.

Tough call for men
Women may immediately change their Facebook status after a break-up, but it is much harder for heartbroken men who take four weeks to change their profile from ‘In a Relationship’ to ‘Single,’ according to a new study.
The majority of men - 63 per cent ‘prolong the misery’ of updating their profile from ‘In a Relationship’ to ‘Single’ for a month or more, eight per cent fail to do so at all. If and when they do, only a third admits if they were dumped - and even fewer - 15 per cent - reveal the reasons why. Women, on the other hand, tend to go public within a few days, often with a new description and photograph to reflect their ‘happy single’ status. |
