Slaves to technology

Technology has been developed by human beings and need to be controlled by them. Allowing technology and artificial intelligence to control us and run our lives ( Mean Machine, Saturday Extra, January 7) makes little sense. It is tragic-comic to see people in distress because ‘friends’ and ‘followers’ have not commented on their pictures or wisecracks uploaded on networking sites. Are we losing confidence in ourselves ?

— Navdeep Kaur Basra Ludhiana

Mr and Ms Right

Socrates, after being at the receiving end of his wife’s rage and after being hit by a bucket of water, is said to have quipped, “ there is often rain after thunder” ( Looking for the elusive Mr Right, Spectrum, January 7). Thank God for the institution of marriage, but for which men and women would have been forced to quarrel with strangers. Marriage of course requires faith, tolerance, adjustment and discipline also besides love and sex. It is not quite like washing your hands in a wash basin.

— B.M. Singh Amritsar
