Double whammy for potato growers
Jalandhar, December 17 The case has been registered against unidentified owners of tractor-trailers at the Bhargo Camp police station. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (City-I) Rajinder Kumar Sharma said a case was registered against the unidentified person for disrupting traffic, causing inconvenience to motorists and putting their lives in danger. While the association tried to mount pressure on the government by “spilling the problem” on city roads demanding strengthening of their infrastructure and adequate marketing policies, it was commuters who faced the heat. Scores of motorists met with accidents on city roads where the potato growers had spilled their produce to lodge their protest on Thursday. Seema, a teacher, was hospitalised after her scooter skidded on the slush caused by the crushed potatoes in Lajpat Nagar near Guru Nanak Mission Chowk. She sustained serious injuries on her face and fell unconscious. It was a driver of an ambulance (108) who rushed her to the local Civil Hospital. Minutes later, two school students had a miraculous escape when their scooter skidded at the same spot and the process continued till the crushed potatoes were removed from the spot with the help of an earth mover. Similarly, scores of tractor-trailer owner caused inconvenience to road users at the Bhargo Camp area. The police has registered a case under Sections 323, 427 and 283 of the IPC against unidentified potato farmers at the Division No 4 police station. Herd people for rally, SAD to bus operators
Jalandhar, December 17 Sources said the district transport officer has been asked to provide around 1,000 buses, trucks and other modes to transport to ferry people to Moga. Private bus operators in the district allege they were being forced to ferry people to the rally. A majority of vehicles are being forcibly plied on different routes without permits for the rally, said sources. This, the transporters say, will cause a huge loss to them. As this was not enough, even the managements of educational institutions have been asked to provide their buses for the Moga rally. Sources further add that the transport department was playing handmaiden to the SAD by forcing private bus operators to take their buses off the official routes and instead ferry people to the rally. The motor vehicle rules stipulate that a vehicle licensed to ply on regular route cannot be rented out for any other activity, including a political rally. The rally will cost around Rs 5 crore to private bus operators, beside wear and tear of their vehicles. Fearing government high handedness, a city-based private bus operator revealed that a bus sent to the rally will cause a loss of Rs 7,000 per day, besides Rs 600 as daily allowance to the driver and the conductor. More than 5,000 buses have been engaged by Akalis to make the Moga rally a success, thus causing a loss of nearly Rs 5 crore to transporters. “The Jalandhar DTO today sent 150 buses to the Chief Minister’s constituency - Lambi - so that people of his area may not face any inconvenience in reaching Moga,” said another transporter. Moreover, the transport authorities are not issuing temporary permits to buses being plied on other routes, he added. When contacted, district transport officer Kehar Singh denied to have asked any private bus operator to send his vehicle for the Moga rally.
