Decamp with gold ornaments, cash, car at gunpoint; police yet to see CCTV footage
Nikhil Bhardwaj

Jalandhar, December 14
Five armed youths struck at a jewellery shop at Jyoti Chowk last night and decamped with cash, gold jewellery, mobile phones and other valuables at gunpoint.

The incident took place at 9.30 pm when the shop owner, Raman Negi, a resident of Moti Nagar, and his son Ankur Negi were instructing workers to close the shop. Five armed youths parked their white Swift Dzire car in front of the shop and took the security guard and Raman’s car driver at gunpoint and forcibly pushed them inside the shop.

The robbers then trained the gun at the shop owner and told him to hand over the CCTV footage. Police sources said the robbers held the owner, his son and six other shop workers captive in a room.

The robbers then started looting gold ornaments, cash, mobile phones and other valuables in the shop. One of the robbers also took away a gold chain, purse and a mobile phone of the shop owner’s son.

The robbers forcibly took away the keys to the jeweller’s Toyota Innova (PB-08-W-4005) and fled with the vehicle, sources said.

The robbers also threatened the jeweller of dire consequences if they ever tried to inform the police. Sources said the accused orchestrated the crime in 15 minutes.

Ankur Negi, the owner’s son, told the newsmen that the armed robbers were in an inebriated state. He told to the police that when they asked him for the CCTV recording, he gave them a set top box of satellite TV. The police is trying to ascertain the location of the accused through mobile phones looted from the shop.

When contacted, Additional Deputy Commissioner RK Sharma said the police was yet to see the CCTV footage. He said the police was also tracing the car looted from the jeweller.

“We have gathered some vital clues, but we cannot divulge details as it can hamper the investigation,” Sharma added.

Traffic police out of slumber
Provides diversion at PAP Chowk

Jalandhar, December 14
The traffic wing of the police has finally woken up from its deep slumber as it has managed to provide a temporary diversion at the 'killer' PAP Chowk, much to the relief to motorists.

Officials of the traffic police held a meeting with employees of a construction company widening the GT Road, asking them to chalk out an alternative diversion for the long route vehicles at the PAP Chowk and widening the road at Chogitti Chowk, where the construction of a flyover is on, to reduce the congestion.

SK Diwan, project manager of company, said a slip road had been created at PAP Chowk to reduce congestion. Vehicles heading from Amritsar to Ludhiana could take the slip road without entering the Jalandhar ISBT. The company will also created space for vehicles heading towards Amritsar by widening the existing road towards the PAP ground's boundary wall, he said.

Similarly, the either sides of the GT Road, adjacent to the under construction overbridge at the Chogitti Chowk, will also be widened to reduce congestion, claimed Diwan.

Ranjit Singh, in charge of the traffic police, claimed the police would also take up the issue of widening of the GT Road at some other points which have been endangering human lives.

The most congested and the worst polluted PAP Chowk has been claiming human lives for the past many years. The spot had already been earmarking as a 'black spot' by the city police and the district administration.

Despite having a police post at the spot, the 'killer' chowk has been proving a death trap for commuters for the past many years. A number of road users have lost their lives at this particular spot and scores have sustained injuries in fatal accidents. Besides, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has also declared PAP Chowk, as the 'most polluted spot' in the city.

‘Evolution’ of ideas
City engineering students design hybrid bike

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, December 14
Exploring the vast field of automobile engineering, six final year BTech (mechanical engineering) students of the local CT Group of Institutions have designed and fabricated a hybrid bike in the style of a chopper named 'Evolution'.

The swanky bike, which gives an adrenalin rush, has been made as an answer to the escalating petrol prices, depleting conventional petroleum-based fuels and environment pollution.

Built at a cost of Rs 4 lakh, the students fabricated the prototype within a short span of five months. However, the initial planning and fabrication of the bike started right from day when students conceptualised this idea.

The students, including Gurinder Singh, Harsimrat Singh, Kanwarpal Singh, Lakhinder Singh, Manpreet Singh and Sukhjinder Singh, have designed the hybrid bike as part of their final year project.

Sharing his experience, Harsimrat Singh said: "The environment-friendly bike has an added advantage of low running cost and thus reduces its dependency on petrol, which has been burning a hole in the common man's pocket."

"It also has a special feature of regenerative braking system, which harnesses the excess energy to extend the battery charge. The braking system also reduces wear and tear of brakes and fuel consumption. When the bike is running on the electric mode, it can be referred to as stealth mode as it lacks engine noise," he added.

Another budding technocrat, Manjeet Singh said: "The bike has been given a chopper look by designing the frame longer accompanied by a stretched front end. It has an extended wheel base with fat rear tyre, top speed of 90 km per hour when running in electric mode and a speed of 110 km per hour when running on petrol," he added.

As the name implies, the bike has a combination of two distinct power sources - an internal combustion engine and other a variable frequency drive electric motor, which works on 72 Volt electric system.

The bike has a 350cc Enfield engine while its batteries get fully charged within four to five hours and can propel the bike up to 50 km in a single charge.

The institute has also planned to tie up with some automobile company so that more modifications can be done in this prototype. Dr Manoj Kumar, group director of the institute, said: "We want to bridge the gap between the industry and students as it will help students to explore more such projects in future."

He added these students would compete in automobile competition to be held at IIT-Delhi in January. "Our students will also participate in the Auto-Expo to be held in Delhi in the coming days," he added.

Recently, Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, gave a grant of Rs 25,000 each for five different projects to be taken up by students in the pharmaceuticals, electronics and mechanical engineering departments.

Dream machine

The students, including Gurinder Singh, Harsimrat Singh, Kanwarpal Singh, Lakhinder Singh, Manpreet Singh and Sukhjinder Singh, have designed the hybrid bike as part of their final year project. The bike has been given a chopper-like look by designing the frame longer, accompanied by a stretched front end. It has an extended wheel base with a fat rear tyre, top speed of 90 km per hour when running in the electric mode and a speed of 110 km per hour when running on petrol. The bike has a 350cc Enfield engine. Its batteries get fully charged within four to five hours which can propel the bike up to 50 km.

Jalandhar, December 14
The city-based environment lovers have resolved that they would take the administration and PUDA head on if the authorities try to uproot any tree in the old SSP complex for the construction of any commercial centre.

Various organisations and groups, who think on similar lines, have started uniting for the cause and are even ready to follow the legal course if need be. The nearly 70-kanal area on the Old GT Road has over 100 trees of various varieties, including banyan, neem, acacia, pipal and eucalyptus.

President of NGO Pahal Lakhbir Singh has said, “The forest cover in the district, which should have been 33 per cent, has already depleted to just 3 per cent. There are no green open spaces or oxygen kiosks anywhere. The whole city is getting converted into a jungle of concrete.”

“There hardly is any space left in the entire city where the residents can gather in the event of any calamity or any emergency of any kind. The city falls in the high risk seismic zone and if there are no open spaces of the sort, there would be no space left where people can sit for getting any first aid services after being evacuated from buildings”, he expressed the worst of apprehensions.

Anoop Watts of NGO Jalandhar Citizens’ Welfare Society, said, “The decision of PUDA to convert the site for commercial purpose can be very detrimental for the environment. While there have been world-level summits on environment conservation, it is shocking to know that our local authorities are hell-bent on axing the trees. There already is so much pollution in the city and maintaining greenbelts has become all the more important.”

Landscapist SPS Dosanjh said, “The site falls in the heart of the city, where there is no oxygen buffer at all. The land can be easily be converted into a public park on lines similar to the Hyde Park of London. I can help the officials in plantations and landscaping of the site, if they feel interested.”

Jalandhar, December 14
As many as 13 male calves were found abandoned at two places along the busy Jalandhar-Ludhiana stretch of the GT Road on Monday night.

The calves aged between two weeks and four weeks.

Receiving information, the People for Animals, an NGO, came to their rescue and brought them to its rescue and rehabilitation centre, located at the Police Lines in the city this evening.

Chander Bhushan, secretary of the PFA and Honorary Wildlife Warden, Punjab, revealed that the calves seem to be of high milk-yielding hybrid cows. Since their number was high, it was evident that they had been abandoned either by the Army authorities or by the owners of some dairy farms.

This was the second such incident in the last two weeks, where male calves had been found abandoned at different places in and around the city. Last week, five male calves were found abandoned at Wadala Chowk and now 13 male calves were found along the GT Road at two places, he said.

Chander Bhushan said eight male calves were found abandoned along the GT Road near DPS School in the Jalandhar Cantonment area and five were rescued from near Chaheru bridge, near Phagwara.

Vinod Kumar, an assistant with the PFA, who brought the calves from the GT Road, revealed that the eight calves were found in a ditch adjacent to DPS School and were hiding themselves under thickets this morning.

“They were virtually cuddling against each other to beat the biting cold and were unable to walk as were not fed. I fed the calves with milk before transporting them to the rescue centre,” he added.
