Fails to nab murder convict
Kapurthala, November 19 DSP Kulwant Singh Heer said raids had been conducted at various possible hideouts of the escaped convict but to no avail. However, he expressed hope that the police would solve the case and arrest the convict soon. Kotwali SHO inspector Bhupinder Singh said the district police had written to jail authorities to provide CCTV footage to make a breakthrough in the case. Jail authorities were of the view that the convict might have escaped on Friday under the guise of a labourer as some construction work was on in a portion of the jail and several labourers are working there. They tried to find him at their own on Friday. When jail officials lost every hope of finding the prisoner on their own, a complaint was submitted to the Kotwali police station of Kapurthala by Deputy Jail Superintendent KS Teji and an FIR was registered on Saturday. Karan was lodged in the Jalandhar Central Jail located near Basti Adda from where he along with other prisoners was shifted to the modern jail in Kapurthala a few weeks ago. He had killed a person in the area falling under the Jalandhar cantonment police station. An FIR was also registered against him two years ago at the Jalandhar Cantonment police station. A city court sentenced him to life term and he was undergoing the sentence at the jail. Inaugurated by the CM just nine days ago on November 3, the modern jail was termed at that time as one of the high-security jails of the country. |

The Mayor maintained his stand that he should have got at least Rs 10 crore at one go for there was no time left for assembly elections. "An amount of Rs 5 crore is still being withheld as you want to use it yourself for works in illegal colonies in the city. Why is this money being blocked when the contractors do not have to be paid before eight months or till their work is over?" the Mayor questioned. Neelamahal wanted to cover it up all as he laughed and said, "You are talking of Rs 5 crore, we will give you Rs 50 crore. Since morning, I have been getting calls from people as well as my top bosses. I do not want to take the matter further." He claimed that he was in a hurry and left soon after sipping a cup of tea. |
